This isn't a bad performance for a rehearsal. Certainly the best live version I ever heard them do of what is perhaps my favorite song all time. At least Zak Starkey is a stellar drummer. Every other drummer I have seen cover this does a piss poor job (the Incubus version at the Who Rock Honors was good aside from the drummer sucking). Plus this is one of the last times John was caught on film and he is still putting in the flourish like nobody else.
Thank God that Ringo Jr is a good drummer...He really knows how to rock with the who!He was their best drummer after Keith...Keith though was in such a bad shape when he came back from his rehab state in california... :S
Every time I listen to the Who with Pino, I just feel dissapointed. Pino's a great bass player, but they should have called it off after Entwistle died. Nobody would have blamed them.
i totally get your point, but think of all the people that would of loved to see them live and hadnt gotten the opportinity(like myself). i think its awesome that they dont just do it for the money and then dont bother to play live.

Lol, that was a very poor performance. Singer had his hands in his pocket, didnt look like he enjoyed it, he was out of tune on a few words too. Search incubus covering the song, on VH1, infinately better, more energy, more passion. Who fans, would you rather someone whos never heard the who here this video or the Incubus cover?
well its rehearsel and plus they've been doing this for 30 years they know when they need to get entergetic. Plus the who are entergetic durring rehearsel because in a interview they said they barely rehearse anymore and when they do they don't really get into it. But they do in the real performance. and dont compare incubus to the who.

As I watch this it's hard to believe that John has 14 days left to live. On the 27th my buddy came to where I work to tell me the bad news. I left work early that day. As a Who fan from the age of 12, I felt like I had lost a family member. We already had tickets for Indy the following month. It was a great but sad concert. John's death arguably left a bigger void in The Who's sound than Keith's. The Who are still capable of great shows but for me it will never be the same. R.I.P. John
That day 6/27/02 was my friggin' BIRTHDAY, had tix for their Chgo concert. Got a call from a Dallas compadre who began the conversation with "DUDE, didja hear about Entwistle?" NEVER does good news follow that opening. In this video, Entwistle could not have been more detached: not singing, not even standing up! He had a heart condition. There's no sane way to put those two words together with the word "cocaine" in any order that makes any sense at all, and so, no more Ox!

As much as I love The Beatles, their rehearsals were worse ( Let It Be), but when they got on the roof, they rocked.

The lead is putting his hands in his pockets!! Wtf! This is an epic song of a great band. I know it's a rehearsal, but what the hell is he doing with his hands in his pants as lead vocalist??
Bands rehearse to practice & learn or relearn the song - not to entertain people. The only bands that put on a show during rehearsals are bands that don't play in public much.
johntkucz ,mabbe he had itchy balls lol , even so the who are and stil are brilliant, with early who ,the best showman drummer, great lead, windmilling and smashing up the amps, the best bass in the world ,and one of the best frontmen, even today there great, and zac starky is a worthy drummer ,very talented ,the who are still head and shoulders above most bands today
however, I just found it shocking to see the LEAD of such an exceptional band singing with so low commitment on one of this great band's major songs! VonRichter attributes this to "energy conservation", which has some logic, but personally, I think is a crock. IF you're that great, and your song is that outrageously classically awesome, belt it in practice, and then TRULY shine in the performance -- that's what I say!
True, wise words VonRichter. I can tell you probably have had a lot of rehearsal practice? However, I just have a totally different philosophy -- more like an athletic approach, but can be applied to music. The intensity, sweat, and high level performance you put into the practice makes the performance exceptional.
Rehearsals are about warming up, keeping sharp, learning songs, tightening the interpretation, sometimes even rocking out hard. It depends. Musicians have been practicing since music existed. It's a huge part of performance. Practice is not the same as performance, never has been.
wow, impressive "resume"!:) "Musicians have been practicing since music existed"...lol. That goes in the greatest, Yogi quotes!! Did mathematicians practice math since math existed? How about writers practicing writing, since writing existed? How 'bout, DUH! great. practice does not equal perfromance, but can define it.
Vocalists especially need to conserve stamina otherwise they will damage their voices. For example in final dress rehearsal for an opera, despite having an audience, the singers do not sing out in full voice at all times. The same goes for rock bands. People who do not conserve their voice burn out or induce serious injuries. Voices are very delicate.
There is nothing odd about this laid-back practice. The proof is in the pudding... the Who deliver at the show, so why complain?
great stamina conservation -- key point. That makes sense, but they can still take the dress seriously and focus, the Who load, didn't look committed, that all. Pavaroti, I'm sure is committed (even though not belting) in the rehearsal. Vocals are an organ, you can strain it for sure.
no complain, just -- again -- shocked at how uncommitted he looked for the practice. Laid-back is differnt from uncommitted. But, you're right about making a distinciton betwee rehearsal and performance. I never have official performances, so all "rehearsals" are like performances, too.
PPS, likewise, enjoyed the exchange, too, although definitely not a debate, -- much more of a dialectic. Reached some quality sytheses, though! I have no formal experience with music, but think I've been channeling my musical interests into athletics and am really trying to gauge what my true are! You've been a huge help, man! thanks.
If you have a bum practice, your performance can't excel that. Sure, there are crowds and fan, "in-the-moment" adrenaline, but you, while making sure you don't get exhausted, should feel out your capacity in practice. Don't you think?
Actually, you never know how the show will go until you do it. Practice is just the training. You need to understand that (performing) musicians are like atheletes. They need to train and condition, and warm up. This is how you get better, how you keep your muscles safe from injury, and build stamina. Otherwise, a boxer, for example, would never train, only fight. Think about that for a second. It's not how it works.
yep, never know till it happens. practice is NOT training. You DISCOVER your voice in practice, then you share it (and discover more) in peformance. in athletics there is tapering, and whatnot but this is MY point -- the athlete who blows off practice sucks, same thing with musicians. this is like an olympian doing a 400 meter jog and calling it a "workout"-- ridic. However, the who are a great band in geneal.
Age is no excuse! That's what I say. If you're the lead singer of the legendary "The Who" and you're singing one of your greatest songs, I'm sorry, but you just don't EVERY put your hands in your pockets -- it's too counter-intuitive -- regardless if you're singing in the shower or on a stage!
Not bad for a live performance. The second guitar? How else? Everything was overdubbed on the record. Check out Layla. 16 guitar tracks! Thanks for the post. Good to see.
Rehersals are supposed to suck!! Or at least that's why you have them... Ask yourself; would you rather a porno of you getting it on with a babe, or spanking the monkey? Okay, maybe you have a point...
Spooky in a way, I saw them the year before in ABQ, and it was a great, great show. I was in SF on vacation when I heard "Big Johnny Twinkle" was dead. I was wearing my concert T-shirt that day too, totally by chance, and talked with random people who saw my shirt and assumed I was wearing it in honor of him.
It's kind of sad and ironic, seeing him sitting on that chair, remenisent of that last picture of Moonie in a chair, that they then used on the back of the album.
I'm a HUGE Who fan but that was pretty bad. The drummer just doesn't fit in,really steps on the others. You can't expect the band that was known for such high energy/volume to be the same at 60, they're now the old geezers they used to sing about! Pete still has it though. The Ox looked rough. People rag on Ringo because he stuck to a very basic drumming style, kept a solid beat and became the luckiest mf drummer on the face of the earth! LOL
I think he only needs them for up close. If you watch the Hyde Park vidoes, it is explained more in the comments, but basically Gary Glitter was swinging the mike stand and nailed him. The Hyde Park concert was the next day and Roger is wearing an eye patch.
marc bolan and t rex better than the who, never heard such rubbish in my life, bolan had his little shot at the big time in the early 70s by 77 he,d had his day,the who have been selling stadiums out both sides of the atlantic since the 660s and still do,ill be there in the summerto see them play in liverpool
I noticed that this was taped in June of 2002. It's sad to me that John was there at that rehearsal. I saw the Who in Boston in September of 2002 (now on DVD) and John wasn't there. I never saw The Who live my whole life and John died three months before I saw them.
don't understand the hating on Ringo. That guy kept one of the most perfect beats I've ever heard. As over rated as the Beatles tend to be, Ringo definitely kept a beat well. And Zack Starkey drums almost exactly like Keith Moon.
u dumb fuck ringo was a metronome he was one of the best time keepers in rock history and second thoses bands were so influnced by the beatles. clean the wax out of your ears and listen to the beatles maybe you'll learn a thing or two.
The Beatles and The Who are the 2 best Rock Bands Ever! IF not for them Rock would not be here today!
I am so happy to see Zac on this video! Being Ringos's son and Keith's God Son he had BIG shoes to fill and HE HAS! He is an excellant drummer and has drummed with alot of Great Bands!
If you reach that age,you can sit wherever you want! I dont deserve to sit,so I walk the streets of S.F. all day, every day looking for a job.I'll be singing for Kieth shortly.Live the music!!!
Commenting on that withought the beatles there wouldn't be the who, or rock music for that matter, the who even said this so you can't say shit about the greatest and most influential rock band ever to walk on this earth
the beatles are over-rated? you obviously know nothig about music you prick. They became the biggest band in the world, and still are the most well known. A band who gets as much success and did what they did for rock and roll music deserves all the credit they get. There music was great. Go and learn something about music before you actually makes these statements..idiots.
Shut up with the Beatle crap. They rule and were good friends of The 'Oo.
Why is John sitting down? Obviously, he was not feeling well. Something was up that we don't know. Circulatory problems? Definitely heart issues. Damn, now wonder he dropped that last line with the hooker in Vegas. Died like a rock star.
Ringo still claims he is the best rock drummer ever. Give me a break. I was in 7th grade when they hit the States, so I have seen a few rock drummers in my life. Ringo was a fine fit for the genius of the other Beatles. He is a totally mediocre drummer. But his son can beat those skins! Saw him with the Who in 2000 and liked his work a lot.
Who are you to be saying something like that? I bet you don't even know how to play the drums. Also, How about you make your own fucking music before you start criticizing other people's? Duesch...
Not to mention it was recorded on like a webcam or something. Not the best sound quality. I'm sure The Who knows how to play a song they wrote 35 years ago.
I hear your argument, but your rehearsal intensnity can shape the performance rehearsal. But then again, life is one big dress rehearsal, so that's that!
they are just Britain personified.

IF you're that great, and your song is that outrageously classically awesome, belt it in practice, and then TRULY shine in the performance -- that's what I say!
johntkucz 4 years ago
Dude, rehearsals arent about blowing your whole load, it's about getting ready for the show.
VonRichter 4 years ago
True, wise words VonRichter. I can tell you probably have had a lot of rehearsal practice? However, I just have a totally different philosophy -- more like an athletic approach, but can be applied to music. The intensity, sweat, and high level performance you put into the practice makes the performance exceptional.
johntkucz 4 years ago
I've been in a million bands.
Rehearsals are about warming up, keeping sharp, learning songs, tightening the interpretation, sometimes even rocking out hard. It depends. Musicians have been practicing since music existed. It's a huge part of performance. Practice is not the same as performance, never has been.
VonRichter 4 years ago
wow, impressive "resume"!:) "Musicians have been practicing since music existed"...lol. That goes in the greatest, Yogi quotes!! Did mathematicians practice math since math existed? How about writers practicing writing, since writing existed? How 'bout, DUH! great. practice does not equal perfromance, but can define it.
johntkucz 4 years ago
Vocalists especially need to conserve stamina otherwise they will damage their voices. For example in final dress rehearsal for an opera, despite having an audience, the singers do not sing out in full voice at all times. The same goes for rock bands. People who do not conserve their voice burn out or induce serious injuries. Voices are very delicate.
There is nothing odd about this laid-back practice. The proof is in the pudding... the Who deliver at the show, so why complain?
VonRichter 4 years ago
great stamina conservation -- key point. That makes sense, but they can still take the dress seriously and focus, the Who load, didn't look committed, that all. Pavaroti, I'm sure is committed (even though not belting) in the rehearsal. Vocals are an organ, you can strain it for sure.
johntkucz 4 years ago
no complain, just -- again -- shocked at how uncommitted he looked for the practice. Laid-back is differnt from uncommitted. But, you're right about making a distinciton betwee rehearsal and performance. I never have official performances, so all "rehearsals" are like performances, too.
johntkucz 4 years ago
PS, enjoyed the debate.
VonRichter 4 years ago
PPS, likewise, enjoyed the exchange, too, although definitely not a debate, -- much more of a dialectic. Reached some quality sytheses, though! I have no formal experience with music, but think I've been channeling my musical interests into athletics and am really trying to gauge what my true are! You've been a huge help, man! thanks.
johntkucz 4 years ago
If you have a bum practice, your performance can't excel that. Sure, there are crowds and fan, "in-the-moment" adrenaline, but you, while making sure you don't get exhausted, should feel out your capacity in practice. Don't you think?
johntkucz 4 years ago
Actually, you never know how the show will go until you do it. Practice is just the training. You need to understand that (performing) musicians are like atheletes. They need to train and condition, and warm up. This is how you get better, how you keep your muscles safe from injury, and build stamina. Otherwise, a boxer, for example, would never train, only fight. Think about that for a second. It's not how it works.
VonRichter 4 years ago
yep, never know till it happens. practice is NOT training. However, the who are a great band in geneal.
johntkucz 4 years ago
Let's not take the analogy with athletics too far.
Anyway the Who have played this song thousands of times. I think they are permitted to be as chill as they want in rehearsal.
VonRichter 4 years ago
Age is not fair. Look at the older videos, back when they were atomic and Moon the Loon was still alive. Dont get old people, its not good.
Smolley28 5 years ago

Okay, maybe you have a point...

resean its crap is cos its on a webcam, its a rehearsal & they were changing how it was gonna be played
Dyerwannabeaspaceman 5 years ago

LOL

A bit rough around the edges, and what's Roger doing with the glasses? Looks like Pete's brother Simon on the second guiitar.
jonathancjudd 5 years ago
Roger has had to wear glasses since he was hit in the face with a mike stand just before the Quad tour.
jbrose40 4 years ago
Thats why? I thought it was his eyesight started to fade.I have seen him after that tour in interviews without glasses
thewho6507 4 years ago
I think he only needs them for up close. If you watch the Hyde Park vidoes, it is explained more in the comments, but basically Gary Glitter was swinging the mike stand and nailed him. The Hyde Park concert was the next day and Roger is wearing an eye patch.

I am, going to add my 2 cents.....
The Beatles and The Who are the 2 best Rock Bands Ever! IF not for them Rock would not be here today!
I am so happy to see Zac on this video! Being Ringos's son and Keith's God Son he had BIG shoes to fill and HE HAS! He is an excellant drummer and has drummed with alot of Great Bands!

the beatles are over-rated. deal with it
caputo1000 5 years ago
the beatles are over-rated? you obviously know nothig about music you prick. They became the biggest band in the world, and still are the most well known. A band who gets as much success and did what they did for rock and roll music deserves all the credit they get. There music was great. Go and learn something about music before you actually makes these statements..idiots.
cfc4life 5 years ago
Shut up with the Beatle crap. They rule and were good friends of The 'Oo.
Why is John sitting down? Obviously, he was not feeling well. Something was up that we don't know. Circulatory problems? Definitely heart issues. Damn, now wonder he dropped that last line with the hooker in Vegas. Died like a rock star.
tommyrock69 5 years ago
Ringo still claims he is the best rock drummer ever. Give me a break. I was in 7th grade when they hit the States, so I have seen a few rock drummers in my life. Ringo was a fine fit for the genius of the other Beatles. He is a totally mediocre drummer. But his son can beat those skins! Saw him with the Who in 2000 and liked his work a lot.
