Some of the key "non-traditional" components of marketing (whether the environment be prosperous or recessionary)--social media, CGM, interactive mkting--are often the first to be axed. It's tough enough to convince sr mgmt that responsible utilization of these online marketing tools is key to brand advocacy & customer retention in "good times," but look at the recent eg. of CGM initiatives among top companies being axed in favor of the "safer" traditional mktng and WOM strategies. Not good.
