For some historical information, the comments are right about the MG42 is a 7,92 mm. Allied feared this weapon so bad, that they tried to replicate it, from captured machineguns from Monte Casino. American engineers disregarded the fact, that it was a 7,92 mm completely, and tried using 7,62 mm from their own 30. cal in the test, which was possible, but slowed the rate of fire, by 40 procent. Further more it jammed constantly during the test, and killed an engineer, due to an exploding chamber.
I guess it's functionally the same thing but I believe the MG42 actually used 8mm rounds, while the Kar used something different. It makes shooting the legal MG42's in existence a challenge as there isn't much 8mm ammo from the era left.
@ice44567 no they both used the same 7.92 round. Most German machine guns and rifles were designed to use this same round including the mg34 and Fg42 as well for example. It made ammunition plentiful for whatever weapon you had that used that calibre.
For the record, the M1919 Browning machine gun used the .30-06 cartridge, same as the M1 Garand, which equates to 7.62mm. The MG42 and Kar98 used a 7.92mm cartridge, making it slightly bigger. The damage thing is just a gameplay mechanic.
