  • Hi Dave, I wanted to see an approximate percentage of problems you find with LCD TVs. What percentage of problems fall into Power Supply, Inverter Board, and Backlights vs a percentage for all other problems. Just getting started in TV repair.

    Jeff

  • @harvjp I don't know exactly what percentage of the problems I see are related to power supply failure, but I will guess bad power supply capacitors represent at least 25 percent of

the LCD TV repairs I do, and perhaps the same percentage in inverter boards but I'm not exactly sure. Good question though. One of these days I should go through Mikes TV case histories and figure out what percentages are related to what based on his tips.

  • ALL Your Videos are Very Educational Thanks!!! I couldn't agree with you more about purchasing components,,We have to be careful sometimes!!!

  • I have a samsung LCD HD TV. I see vertical lines on my monitor, not at all able to see any picture on the screen. Technician had a look at it and says "display needs to be replaced" and it costs [indian currency]Rs. 13000/- . How do i know that the display really needs a replacement.

  • @rajkumartree

Sometimes you can use freeze spray on the edges of the display and it will temporarily make the display problem go away but not always. Sometimes you can also try pressing the edges of the display and this may temporarily repair helping to verify if the display is bad.

  • Hi I've been trying to repair my Philips 50inch plasma tv, Ive gotten brand new buffer boards for it and that has completely heped the top half of my tv but the bottom half remains black with colored dots. Can you offer me some advice or point me in which direction i should go. I would really appreciate it. Your videos are one of the best out there. Thank you

  • @Liv11714

Sorry to butt in, but have you checked the Y-SUS board? Sometimes, when buffers fail, they can take out the Y-SUS (and vice versa).

Also, if you're going to service or replace the Y-SUS board, it may be a good idea to service or replace the Z-SUS at the same time.

  • i have a black samsung 40inch tv but all my furniture is white high gloss ....can i take the case off the tv and spray it high gloss 2 mach everything else ? ? ?

and is it easy 2 remove the tv fron the case without breaking anything ? ? ?

  • Like your videos. Please make more. Everything your saying makes perfect sense. Thanks for all the tips

  • ???

  • i can often hear flyback tranformerts if the have the ~16Khz signal...of course it could just be an sub-harmanic....off of the ferite core....

  • @XTYNoLuck I remember in my younger years I was also able to hear the flyback oscillating but after we get older we loose the ability to hear high frequencies.

  • do you have any idea what to do if my samsung plasma has one chime / one click & still wont turn on? capacitors look perfect, have checked them. thanks!

  • I have also have a dead Insignia 37" TV, no picture, no sound. I am new to LCD TV repairs but I have measured all the voltages that come out of the power supply board, they're all as should be including the 24Vs for the inverter board. So I assume that the problem is not the Power supply components (Caps, etc). Does anyone have an idea what else I should look for?

    Many thanx

  • @1000MOSHT My next step would be to check the inverter board transformers.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Thank you for prompt reply. I'll check them out. Are they available and reasonably priced to replace? What should the output Voltage on the inverter trans be ? Is it likely that all the transformers are knackered at the same time?! By the way, I should theoretically be able to inject audio into the sound input and hear it amplified through the speakers regardless of the inverter problem?

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Hi, I have checked the Inverter board transformers, 24v goes into the board but zero volts at all pins of all transformers. I suppose I need a new inverter board?

  • @1000MOSHT Sometimes it makes more sense to buy a whole board but I can't guess at your particular TV.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Thank you for your reply Sir. I would gladly buy the board if it was established for sure that's where the problem is! BTW, I connected an external VGA monitor to the main board (VGA output) and there is no output from that socket. Is it possible that the problem is on main board or somewhere else?

  • @1000MOSHT

    I don't know.

Sorry I can't do better but I don't like to guess

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs i have a ge 60inch projection screen, n im pretty sure the ihvt is gone out. can that b fixed. its mounted to a circuit board.

  • Hi there, my Phillips 42" LCD television just blanked out. The sound works but no picture. Sent it to the repair shop and they want $375. to replace the power board. I think I can do it myself after viewing yours and a few other videos. How difficult is it to replace a power board?

  • @blondshavmorfun

It's generally not to difficult to replace the power supply board but I wonder if the repair shop gave you the correct diagnosis. Perhaps they meant the inverter board went out. It could also cause the picture to go out while the sound continued to working.

  • hi, i replaced a transistor in my girlfriends tv and it worked for three days and then the transistor went back out. did i do somthing wrong? i replaced the compound and everything

  • @terry6512 Sometimes you can bring a TV back to life when you replace a bad transistor, but it could be that the problem which made the first transistor go bad is what made your replacement transistor go bad. A couple things that can cause this might be an intermittent short across a winding in the transformer your transistor is powering. A less common reason is a bad capacitor somewhere in the circuit which is causing the transistor to work harder than it normally would.

  • thanks for responding, here is what i replaced in her tv, first i noticed the LA78041 smoked when i plugged the tv in, so i replaced that part, it lasted three days and then when i opened the tv it was cracked open. i replaced the silicone thermal paste when i replaced it before . any suggestions. i said capacitor before but i dont think thats what this is but thats the part i meant before. i checked my solder job to see if i cross soldered but i will re-do it over just to make sure

  • @terry6512

The LA78041 IC is used in the vertical section of most CRT type TVs so I'm going to assume this is what your working on. You will generally find a couple capacitors close to the IC you just replaced which are bad and if you fail to replace them your just going to keep blowing ICs. If you had an ESR meter for testing capacitors you could determine which ones are bad. Mikes TV tips probably have this tip recorded in his book. Did you call him?

  • @terry6512 One other point. Often times a resistor goes out when the IC goes bad, but you can start by replacing the IC and the capacitors and see if that fixes it.

  • Hello, My name is Ed Hudson. I had a TV repair shop back during the 80"s repairing VCR's and TV sets. I got out of the buis when other opportunities presented themselves in the housing boom we had in Northern California. Would you say that with the LCD and Plasma type TV's there's going to be a new wave of repair need?

  • @slowhand221

Yes I would say there is undoubtedly going to be a new wave of needed repairs, but when the life of the new TVs is so short and price of the parts is often so high I wonder how many people will want their TVs repaired.

  • That is something that everyone should know. Thanks. I have read that these refurbished lamps last maybe up to 3-6 months.

  • Thanks for the info. Glad to see your enjoying the videos.
