Hello. I just wanted to tell you that your tutorial rocks!! You've been extremely helpful to me, and I am glad I managed to understand everything you presented in the tutorial. The method you use is the best, in my opinion. I was lucky to open the link you provided, and download the page, with different methods, because the website died in 2 days from then!! All the other methods mentioned there are just not good enough.
Well instead of exporting it in PS you can just open the AI file in your PS as Smart Object. This way you can still resize the image to whatever you want without rasterizing in the AI.
I have a problem with exporting to photoshop.. I did what your tutorial told me (Rasterize - Export).. but it seems that the rasterization didn't work at all.. when I try to resize the image, it became blurry pixelized.. I'm using CS5 for both Illust and PS..
I'm so glad I've found your videos. They're really helpful, especially the part with the lines. Now I know how to make them look clean and slick ^_^ Thank you!
i tried to get in to vectoring a few years ago. i got frustrated and left my 2 projects. watching this tutorial makes me want to revisit my projects. thank you for this very helpful tutorial. mabuhay!
I've heard people talking about upscaling the image first in Illustrator, then rasterizing it and exporting it to photoshop. Does this actually do anything and how would you go about doing it?
@uberdonut I don't know, I've never tried it. The size of the export image depends on your export DPI. I exported the image in the tutorial at 300 dpi and it came out at 3400x2200. Which is more than large enough for the most common screen resolutions. Theoretically you can infinitely scale a vector, but why you'd ever need to is beyond me.
To open up in Photoshop, I export the file in photoshop format. In photoshop,I blow it up to, say, 5000pixels width, and it comes out all blurry and stuff. It isn't a smart object or anything; just a mere image (that's why it loses quality when size is increased). So, what on earth am I doing wrong? D:
@MDragonFang Thats because photoshop is based around pixels and painting with shades while illustrator is focused on lines and vectors. When you export to photoshop from illustrator, you will also have some loss in quality as well. Its natural.
In any case, why on earth do you need it 5000 pixels, thats nuts.
@Artiifakt Already found how to fix it. But sometimes I need to print out my works for various reasons, and I want it to be rather big sometimes. Especially with the better printers you're going to need high quality vectors.
@ProCollab It's basically just about taking a screenshot from a show/movie and cleaning it up so it becomes a usable background that can scale to nearly any screen resolution. It's also sort of a hobby really, especially if you like art/images.
Well, you have inspired me to vector. I think I'll have to start on my brother's computer though, since it can handle WAY more than my crummy Gateway laptop can.
@ThieflordZ5 A few hours. The amount of time it takes will decrease as you familiarize yourself with the pen tool. Or how anal you are about line width and such. :p
@spooksmagee Thanks, I've been practicing almost everyday with lots of stuff... I've finished quite a few pictures and it's getting better every time...
@ImALostPikachu Make sure both illustrator and photoshop are up to date, and close all other programs that use up a lot of memory. I had this problem too actually, and updating both programs (I think) fixed it for me.
@spooksmagee I have Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 up-to-date and 70% of my Ram are Free(I have 4gb ddr3) and I having the same issue with memory. Is there a way to solve it??
@Vunk I honestly don't know. You'd have to Google it more than I did, since the updating thing solved my problem. I know people with low end machines can export files at crazy high DPI settings (like 1K) and get no error message. So it's not your machine, it's the software.
If all else fails you could reinstall one or both programs
Thanks for this. I always wanted to know how to do clean sharp lines and edges in my vectors and am glad I found this video. I'm more excited to vector now knowing it'll look decent.
just one more question, hope you don't mind me asking but I'm making an anime though I not sure if I'll vecto r it , might take alittle too long but to get to my point I want to use some music for it and this is great music for all five, now not that you would but copy wright wise is it much of an issue with regards to youtube, Im alittle nieave on this but i guess most people don't get permission for the music on there tutorials, just wondering about your thoughts on this
Check out the description box for each vid, the songs are all in there. Feel free to PM me if you want recommendations of similar artists or tunes. :)
Brilliant tuto. Superb image quality, and very useful infos, with an excellent drawing (for once... Youtube is full of baby/amateurish ugly drawings tutos).
I have Illustrator, Flash and Photoshop, and I am trying to make an anime with those, this helped me understand the concepts of layers better, I colored something without layers already, I actually pulled it off, but this way is much cleaner, I just wish I could master the pen tool, it's hard for me, and without a tablet I cant stroke that well either, I'm in for a rough time but I think what I've got planned is worth it.
I'm making an anime too I've already got about 30 seconds. I do it in photoshop animation facility it's a real quick process handrawn stuff with layers and some limitations but the animation is basically the same quality as anime/only depends the artist skill, only outline though no color or it would take to long. I'd like to see yours if you put it on you tube.
must say good tutorial but music isnt my taste lol i had to mute it and put on snoop dog while i watched ur video hehe....But i give u 5/5 for the tutorials...well done
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. :) Might make a few more in the future, not sure atm.
And I say you should have photoshop if you have illustrator because IMO the two programs work well together, illustrator for vector graphics and photoshop for raster graphics. You don't absolutely need PS, but it's still a great program to have.
Thanks so much. I liked your mouse dancing at the end, too. I can't wait to make vector image out of screen shot like you did. Yay!

I've just heard of vectoring, and I think you made a great tutorial for it,
but can you explain why people vector?
Like, what is vectoring's main purpose?
It looks like a lot of work, and I just am wondering what it is used for.
Well, other than making a graphic more high quality.
