This song is exactly a woman I dated, both in her words (she actually said most of the things in this song to me, I swear) and actions. And I was dating her when I first heard this. Scary.
Are you kidding? This song is so sad. Roll the Bones is considered by most to be somewhat uninspired, but how can you listen to all of Counterparts and not feel that this IS one of the great Rush albums. It's up their or at least close to Moving Pictures. Snakes and Arrows needs love too btw. 3 instrumentals! Snakes and Arrows is at least up their or close to Counterparts. Test for Echo! DOG YEARS! What is wrong with you people!?
@FeelingFreshSon Definitely not a fan of this album, sorry. Not a fan of the whole direction of it. Not a good fit for the band. It's light years below Moving Picture to me.
@FeelingFreshSon What the fuck kind of comment is that? What the hell? I was polite and respectful but apparently you are some kind of asshole that can't tolerate any opinion but your own. Well yeah and you'll get yours too, dickless. I hate to break it to you, but you are not the arbiter and final authority of all things Rush, you dumbass.
omg lol I'm sorry, I was just trying to be funny. There's really no way to end a conversation over opinions satisfactorily so I decided to just be, uh, I dunno if it we were actually talking you could have told from my inflection and facial expression and stuff. Oooppps...now we have an argument going? Is this the part where we hate on each other? XD It's just RUSH, you know, with the crazy pink letters
I don't believe in extended back and forths on comment pages, but since we're already here do you mind telling me what you think was as good as moving pictures? omg it was test for echo wasn't it!?
@FeelingFreshSon Hah! Well sometimes they can be fun. To me, Rush's 5 Star albums are...Fly By Night, A Farewell To Kings, Hemispheres, and Signals. And 2112, Permanent Waves, and Grace Under Pressure come close.
Ah, love Grace under Pressure, I'm still working my way back through their catalog. I'm on MP now...I heard "the temples of syrinx" or whatever it's called. I don't know if I can handle a full 30 minutes of that! His voice was so high pitched.
@FeelingFreshSon Haha. 2112 is not only my favorite Rush song, it's in my top 5 of all time, best ending ever. I don't think I ever met anyone going through Rush's catalog from newest to oldest before. That's a novel approach, no wonder it makes you see Counterparts and Roll The Bones in a different light.
@mynameisdotas - that's what separates Rush from your other classic rock bands. You like their hits, and a few of their other songs...with Rush, pretty much everything they do is gold. You randomly pick an album, then a track off the album, and it's essentially guaranteed to be a great song, and none of them are the same.
I love some of rush's bigger songs, like the first four songs of moving pictures, and spirit of radio and that stuff, but it's sad that songs like this, or rather the entire counterparts album is so greatly overlooked. the less know songs are easily just as good, at least some of them
@mynameisdotas RUSH REally reinvented themselves with counterparts a great and often overlooked album, i especially like this song and cut to the chase well i like every song on the album
@prsplayer210 Yeah, they really did, this is kinda coming out of their synth period, and I respect them for expirimenting, and the synth period isn't all bad, but the guitar is lost a lot of the time, so this album is really epic because they rediscover their sound, with their own twist. But this album is great partly because it's not as commercially popular as moving pictures, 2112, etc. Plus, the songs are very good
I saw them perform in Dallas during the Test for Echo tour...Awesome!!! I do agree that Rush is not 'respected'. I saw them play on the Daily Show... Jon Stewart disrespected them So Bad, interrupting their performance of 'Tom Sawyer'...I haven't watched Daily Show since.
@LordSkunk707 Oh my! You are right! (apologies to John Stewart, It WAS Colbert! Joke or not...one does not interrupt a band's live performance...just rubbed me wrong..maybe others can laugh with Colbert, but not I.
@arthurtelf that pissed me off too. but to be fair, he did give them far more time than any other guest on his show. and its hard to fit a 6 minute performance on a 22 minute show with everything else too
What a great album. Rush doesn't do love songs, but this entire album is a powerful look at love, sex, relationships, living together, etc. Each Rush album is a study on life and human behavior. They should be studied in college. ;-)
Ive seen Rush 4 times before 1980. I know what I am talking about..Rush would have been my choice for the recent opening of BC Place..Not Sarah :<..no offence to her btw
BTW..the ppl of Vancouver are hung up on the likes of Sarah and some hobo bong band..did ya see the opening of BC Place?..They would'nt know Geddy/Alex/Neil
"She said, this is not a love song. This isn't fantasy land", as they flawlessly attack the chorus as only they could...I get a "rush" EVERY. DAMN. TIME.
I feel weird about the whole thing....This song came out 'just a little after I first became a Rush fan' ...only that isn't really true. This song came out 12 or 13 years after I first became a Rush fan, and I had finished growing up, fallen in love a couple of times and was going through a divorce the year this song came out...and was into the 3rd year of an undergraduate degree...and either missed or was so broke that I didn't pick up this album, but I really like this song.
Yes indeed a very overlooked song. Its like the uncool rush song in a pool of songs by the same band that is deemed uncool by society lol i always felt like this song and the way they played i and mixed the instruments was just fantastic omg it gives me chills to hear the bell hits on the drum kit during the chorus, it sounds like glass or something lol just so bright and expressive to me ~ one of my favorites
Closest they have ever got to country music ever! Another one of those songs that should have had more airplay except the lyrics are to hard to hear and understand!(For the average joe)
The song that got me hooked on Rush was Fly By Night. I was 11 or 12 at the time, went to a independant music store looking for cassette tapes ( no record player & before CD's ) & the guy behind the counter recommended Rush's All the World's a Stage. I listened to Fly by Night over & over, wore out the tape, bought the LP ( record ) wore that out, bought a second copy then eventually bought the CD. I have almost everything they put out in LP & CD.
God thank You for chance to explore this band. I was digging real hard and this my treasure: RUSH. Everytime I'm listening to this Band I have this strange feeling that for them time had just stopped. Rush is a real Jewel in a Today Eaten By a Money Music World. Hail from Cracow:)
I love all of Rush's music but for some reason this was the one that hooked me when I was 16. Thanks to how MTV was headed I never heard it on mainstream radio, but I was blessed to have a so called "underground" radio station nearby that played Counterparts front to back and Cold Fire, Everyday Glory, and Animate had me at the record store the next day. Rush got me through so much in the next 5 years. Keep rocking!
I've only been listening to Rush for a few months now, but I absolutely love what I am hearing! Not a single disappointment! Rush is one of the first bands in that category.
@dani010402 Something like that happened to me to, except that I always had a double crush: one for Alex , the other for Neil and thought Geddy seemed likeable but he didn't affect me like "I have a crush on you" but BOTH of the other ones did, LOL! My life is still so much like that!
I was a barteneder when this album came out. I played it to the bone everyday on the houses sound system loud at work when I had to set the bar up for the night. It had a great tempo and heavy rock sound to it.
@Jick769 True. And I don't know what I was thinking when I posted that, because there are a few on Counterparts and have been a few others throughout their career.
i just heard this song for the first time and all i can say another great song from one of the best rock bands in history. Can't wait for Time Machine Tour 2010!!!
the interviews say that Metallica thanks rush for some "phrasing in music" and i heard that the olympics were supposed to pan from Ottawa, Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calagary etc... but when the Georgian Sledder was terminal. they canned the opening sequence. just what i heard.... rush rules.
Whew !!!!!!!!!!! Very energetic, but deep song ! Lifesons guitar has a very smoking tone on this, Pearts droms are very bombastic, in your face, yet complex, Geddys bass has it's ror and neat little quirks and lines, and his vocals are in your face yet emotional. One of Rush's best ever tunes !
100% agreed, I was actually very very disappointed.. simple plan...... nickleback......... avril lavigne.......................... and no rush.. what is wrong with our country? I almost felt good that they didnt play with bands like that, and even if they did play I bet they would not have been the closing band for it, which would have been really stupid, too.
Rush at the Olympics?? wow thats like bringing metallica up there.Thier a hard rock band ,and i love Rush ,but what could of they ever played ?...By tor and the snow dog ? maybe Witch hunt?
Not really like bringing metallica at all. Rush cannot be put into one genre. I'd say if they were to have played it probably would have been spirit of radio, or free will.. maybe far cry. Either way, big disappointment =/
@1001001sos1001001 I read in an interview somewhere that they said no because the acoustics in BC Place are awful and they don't agree with lip-syncing their songs. It sucks that we couldn't see them, but I'm glad they were asked, and they declined for good reasons!
@1001001sos1001001 Yeah I was thinkning the same thing but I realized how much a hidden secret is a good thing just like the nhl., remember it does not have to be popular to be good just like rush!
Very smooth, yet smoking style. This is kind of a ballad of sorts, a heavy and bitter one. Who hasn't been in this situation in a relationship before ?
@kvstr1~It has got some notes about it on Wikipedia, but true, it is a overlooked song. At some parts you can hear a similarity to Red Tide, the only thing I can say about Red Tide is I wish that they would've stuck to something to the opening style. But I do know this was one of the main hit songs from Counterparts, even though I don't have the CD myself.
@kvstr1 i agree so fucking much. has helped me and showed a friend and helped her. rush is the greatest band EVER. and neil peart is a god on so many levels. im a little bias considering how after my first concert when i was in 4th grade i became a drummer and got my first set less than a year later and im still drummin at 24. ROCK ON!!!!! \m/
@px7zz that's awesome :) I'm a drummer too and I'm also 24 hahah, randomness. I only started 2 years ago though >_< so im a lil behind.. and of course rush is the greatest band ever :)
This song is exactly a woman I dated, both in her words (she actually said most of the things in this song to me, I swear) and actions. And I was dating her when I first heard this. Scary.

@1001001sos1001001 I think the reason they didn't was because they were asked to mime a performance.

@1001001sos1001001 They were invited, but told they had to lip-synch to make sure they did it right (!) Yeah. Sure.
