  • this guys rocked so hard... since that times, very few musicians could so such amazing things!

  • I love this! We were assigned a certain Jazz musician as a project in Jazz band, and I'm SO glad I got Lionel Hampton!!

  • One of Lionel Hampton great recording is Stardust where Slam Stewart play a bass solo while

humming. I've looked for it everywhere and can't find it.

  • 8 people took the train home instead of flying.

  • Is that Patty Page introducing him?

  • elsker den, var vel C Basie som hadde den? men jeg vet L.R: spillte NI.TIME Melodi;

KID FROM RED BANK eller var det, Memryees of you AV Hubye blake,og D.Ellington?

  • wonderful video... thank you for sharing :-)

  • I see Spike Lee used this in his Malcolm X film.

  • 100% class!

  • I am digging this, Daddy.

  • @ThatHistoryGuy wow....

  • Lionel is hip no matter the era.

  • That's Patti Page doing the introduction, from her TV series "The Big Record."

  • He was allways my idol! Play on!

  • vibraphone sounds excellent accompanied with the tenor saxaphones. the "chunk chunk chunk" rhythm (with dble bass, guitar, drum) feel is very eminent.

  • What a kick to have these old classics,

thankfully, our kids will enjoy this as much as we.

  • This was considered the devil's music of that era

  • @M00Dswing9

To quote Bill Hicks, "if it's a choice between listening to good music and going to hell, or going to heaven and listening to New Kids on the Block - I'm gonna be on the lake of fire, rockin out"

    :D

I think if something feels good, it can't be bad :p

  • Ok a dumb question follows...Does anyone happen to know this piece for vibraphone, no idea at all... the main melody is simple, but the backing sounds like a steam locomotive created with drums and vibraphone. It is fast and really rolling on the vibraphone. It is tad like Train Home by Pat Metheny. I know this is lame description but please.

  • 1:13 LMAO..

  • The reason why everyone looks so happy in these big band videos is because they finally can afford food and housing also drugs

  • if ever there was a genius on his chosen instrument, it was Lionel H.

  • @brabazon10 absaloutley true lionel is LEGEND..

  • @brabazon10 absolutely he played a cd with chick corea that was modal and without changing his style ripped right through the tunes with no problem. he is responsable for vibes becoming a jazz instrument

  • @SuperSalisbury1337 your foundation artists will always keep your taste high.

  • @SuperSalisbury1337 Hey, don't give morons like that any attention... that's what they crave. It's a good thing that you enjoy all types of music from different past generations. My vinyl covers just about everything but my "era" was the sixties. Your generation (I asume 20-30 age group) has contributed some excellent music in my opinion. Keep doing what you like, of course, but don't forget to capitalize those proper nouns LOL.

  • The brother is getting into it with the Cello!

  • Hell yea!!!!!!! thanks posting.

  • Who is the leftie on guitar? Hes crankin!!!

  • @HendrixHazel The guitarist is probably Billy Mackel.

  • Great ! He goes quite nuts on another live version of this with a bigger band. Checkout "Flying Home Hampton Lionel 1965" on "erwigfilms" channel.

  • Xylophone and Vibraphone are two different instruments, not two different names for the same instrument.

  • That solo by Illinois Jaquet was so great that Hamp went back and learned it so he could play it on vibes. It's practically a prerequisite for young sax players

  • I like this but I looove the way they used it in the malcolm x movie lindy hop scene it sounds soo freaking good check it out!

  • great music. too much buffering.

  • Lionel Hampton is the greatest xylophonist (later termed vibraharpist and vibraphonist) that ever played the instrument, and my second goes to Milt Jackson...This is a very good rendition of "Flying Home" at the age of 49 on national television, but check out the Lionel Hampton Orchestra in the 1940's...Man, that cat could vibe...

  • è un mitoooooo!!!!

  • This is Happy Music!

  • he's not vamping,

  • Hell yes!

  • the autobiography of Malcolm X brought me here and I'm lovin' it

  • Awesome! TY RCO64 for posting

  • Hamp's ''Flyin' Home'' had made some reefer-smoking Negro in the second balcony believe he could fly, so he tried-and jumped-and broke his leg, an event later immortalized in song when Earl Hines wrote a hit single tune called ''Second Balcony Jump.''(p.77) - The autobiography of Malcolm X.

  • smokin'

  • Thanks from ENGLAND!

  • You don't oft seen a mallet percussionist on center stage nowadays. These were good times. And he was a great musician.

  • lol i was joking guys, I know that isn't hendrix. but maybe it's his dad xD

  • @SuperSalisbury1337 maybe he isnt bashing you but the music industry. sure there is great music out but mainstream music for the most part sucks

  • @SuperSalisbury1337 this brother knows whats going on, open your ears to all music, i really dig your view man, keep thinking like that and keep exploring music!

  • Cat on the bass is Goin, man, Goin !

  • Thanx from Hungary :-))

  • Damn son he's jivin

  • bah! a bunch of humbug and reafer music! jazz is of the devil!

  • maaan, i love that swing!!=)

  • @0oTHEJACKo0

Actually, this is jump blues. =)

    And it kicks ass.

  • gotta love that swingin' Jazz :D

  • Takes a lil' more than that to get us to JUMP these days. But still gotta respect the hell out of it. Good stuff.

  • Who's that guitarist ?

  • @chicagoblueslegend Probably Billy Mackel.

  • He's rocking the fuck out

  • does anyone have his track called ''fun''(album ''70's jazz, soul and funk rarities from the old school''),and if so,could anyone upload it,please?:) thank you.

  • Even Patti Page looked hot introducing Hamp!

  • un genio del jazz!!!!

  • This was originally recorded in 1942 and music historians have stated that this is one of the first rock 'n' roll records. Great stuff fun to see the drummer and bass player in the groove.

  • This is part of what made America so great and swingin'! We ought to bring it all back!

  • interesting way the guitarist is holding his guitar, like Freddy Green standing up lol

  • Did Lionel Hampton make any music during the 70's? maybe some real good jazz or soul?? thanks

  • @KickBack90sBeats Diggin in the Crates? ;)

  • @JazzyFunkaHolic haha, well I love the vibes and especially when its played along with bass... and if I can find a really dope vibe player that put out some vinyl in the 70s, it would be a nice addition... havent been able to find much in the record stores where I live... ya dig?

  • @KickBack90sBeats yessir ... I am Mr. Dig-a-Lot :D ^^

  • @KickBack90sBeats He toured lot in the 70s. I saw his band several times including when he did a concert my junior year (1979) at my alma mater, Hampton University.

  • Who's the guitarist? Jimi Hendrix?

  • @KenSkaii Not likely. This guy is small, fat and bold. The only things that connects him to Hendrix are: he's left handed and he's black.

  • @KenSkaii

Sorry this 10 years before Jimi Hendrix.

  • He is the best. Thanks for posting this.

  • oh damn...

  • jazz alway was the most high homosexual art form, and Lionel's graet gay performence is prove for it.

    your truley

    Rab Hines

  • Damn. What kind of mallets are those? The heads are TINY.

  • @beaverteeth92 i think theyre rubber

  • This is from the weekly Patti Page "Big Record" show on CBS.

  • Its a tentet!

  • You literally can't sit still and listen to this... I love it

  • He was the best !!

  • All great, but that ending is superior.

  • @Lance733nk I think you may just be right. &e was with the band through 57, but didn't he go to Brubeck's quartet around 58? I may be a bit off, but I thought I remembered him with the quartet at carnegy. Thanks.

  • This is hella clean! (I like it).

He's beast at them vibes. (he's good)

    Rock on.

  • His theme song, I think.

  • Love it! I wish they made music like this now. Classy-Jazzzzzzz....

  • Too hot. Still trying to figure out who the guitarist is, as well as that fantastic bass player. That man can slap! As has been said, the whole band is hot. Excuse me, I'm going to watch this cut again...

  • @NcalBiker

I think the bass is covered by Milt Hinton- The Judge.

  • Can anyone doubt now what a state of cultural and musical degeneration we're now in? FlaSoxxJimm is correct. Words will not do justice for Lionel Hampton. What an inspiring performance to his signature number.

  • Lionel was the best. No words do him justice.

  • Go Lionel GO!

  • I am LOVING the guitarist vamping in the background. who is he? anyone know. He's got this warm, front pickup, tube distortion thing going that is just out of sight!!!!

  • @atomic6120 The guitarist is Billy Mackel, I love his playing on Hamp's stuff - he knew how to vamp a two or three string riff in the background like a mini horn section when the horns weren't playing just to keep things cooking. Great player!

  • @atomic6120 Billy Mackel

  • Happy birthday, Lionel! (4/20/1908 - 8/31/2002) Thanks for all the great music.

  • How wonderful when someone performs for you & a smile doesn't leave your face.

  • sweet vid- band is hot~! does anyone know who the other players were or are?

  • Lionel Rocks..!!

Always put on a GREAT Show..!

    RIP

  • Sooo much better than hip-hop.

  • those doodes were goin to town!

  • Dear Lord, that lady was right, I couldn't keep my feet still! This was good music!!!

  • That was a great wake pu! I'm ready to go to work now.

  • I do believe one of the trumpeters is Quincy Jones, am i mistaken?

  • He's black so it makes him really good it's just how it is. Vibraphones ftw

  • @ZachD8

You realize that this statement is racist right?

  • @ZappaSkiLL6

Maybe racist aganist white people? But i am white, i'm just saying black people are good at like everything...

  • @ZachD8

yeah, actually what you said is racist against black people too. Just because its "a compliment" doesn't mean that you aren't generalizing and stereotyping someone based on race - the definition of racism.

  • @ZappaSkiLL6

Dammit your such a fag, I'm not being racist if i compliment him, and i have no idea where your at, but last time i checked black people playing vibes is not really a sterotype, over half of the people in the world don't know what the fuck a vibraphone is.

Go suck a dick, it's sad that you can't just enjoy the video

  • Excellent you're a racist AND a homophobe. Also, let me point out where your logic/ inability to follow a simple line of reason fails. "People playing vibes" is not the stereotype I'm alluding to. The stereotype that black people are inherently good at music is a racist stereotype, and yes even if your stereotype intends a compliment its still racist. Whether or not people around the world play vibraphone is irrelevant. Also, I did enjoy the video until read your comment.

  • @ZappaSkiLL6

This is getting better and better, i'm thinking your the racist really. Just the way of your tone, you can't stand a black person being better at something you suck at? and fyi being a good musisian isn't a normal sterotype of a black person (besides rapping) that's what i was getting at. And you enjoyed the video up until my comment. okay dumbshit, you don't have read the comments on videos, and 2nd some words don't change the sound or picture of the video. Go fuck ur self fag :)

  • @ZachD8

Stop fighting. It doesn't make a difference whether you win or not.

  • lul u mad

  • @ZachD8

Ahh just as I thought. You're a Runescape player.

    That explains it.

  • @ZappaSkiLL6

His comment was indeed racist, but racism is not necessarily negative. In most of the cases it is meant negative, but this is an exception. By saying his comment was racist you are the one who makes him look bad, while his only intention was giving the video and Lionel Hampton a compliment.

I think you are the one to blame ZappaSkiLL6 , not ZachD8.

  • @koedlt

What school did you go to, and what books have you read that taught you that there is a "good" type of racism? All racism is harmful to the race it stereotypes because it "others" that race. Racism that is meant to be a "compliment" is inherently inaccurate through generalization, but it also makes room for more "negative," (your words, not mine) racism like X-race is lazy, stupid, or only good remarkable because it produces good musicians. READ A BOOK BY BELL HOOKS and this article

  • @ZappaSkiLL6

I am not going to reply on your last message because it is a most irrelevant message. Now because you are taking everything so literally (see beginning of this argument). I am going to explain to you what racism is. Racism is to distinguish based on race. Now it is true that mostly all times racism is mentioned ( to say all would be intellectually incorrect ) the "negative". ZachD8 meant good with his comment, and there are no negative interpretations to make out of his comment.

  • correction : 'Now it is true that mostly all times racism is mentioned ( to say all would be intellectually incorrect ) the "negative" form is meant.'

continuation : Can you please tell me why you put such a negative comment to begin with? I can't figure it out.

  • @koedlt

Because I cannot condone the outright oppression of marginalized people.

  • @ZappaSkiLL6

On what base do you call ZachD8 marginalized?!

  • @koedlt

I'm not talking about ZachD8 when I'm referring to marginalized people you idiot. Don't respond to my posts if you don't understand what or who I'm talking about.

  • @ZappaSkill6

Please don't call me an idiot. That is quite weak of you... I didn't understand your last message if you weren't talking about ZachD8, that's true. But then explain me how your comment answers to my question ( I do not speak English often ). It seems to me you are changing the subject.

  • Racism is a belief system that most people possess but don't want to evaluate. You're trying to reason with people here who are very unaware of their surroundings and the incredible destructiveness of racism. This music is simply wonderful. It is better to watch the video without looking at the comments below it because they are usually much too disturbing.

  • James Baldwin, in the 1980s, visited our college and addressed the audience by first saying that he was tired of being viewed as a "black author" and just wanted to be viewed as a writer. He asked the audience to refrain from treating him as something other than a writer. The audience could not hear his request and did exactly what he didn't want them to do. He became despondent. Another example of a person not respecting the genius in front of him: Bryant Gumble's interview of Anita O'Day

  • @ZappaSkiLL6 Are you really so close minded to say complimenting a black person at music is racist? It's really sad that there are so many Americans that have gone crazy with political correctness and have forgot logic in the process.

  • whos the guitar player!?!?

  • what a talent and fun guy and all round entertainer.

  • Excellent

  • Great comping by guitarist!

  • Flying home.Amen to that Lionel,sir <3

  • I just love the vibraphone and no one could tap it like Lionel Hampton! Deez katz wa swingin man! Ive also heard that Lionel was a highly accomplished drummer as well! What a great and video document!

  • one of the best!

  • wow !! that would take a real kinG

  • Bad ass.

  • I concur, smokin' red hot!

  • vibra cat , he's smoking red hot

  • Pure unadulterated GENIUS!

  • omg i love this song my sisters choir went to the lionel hampton jazz festival in idaho and won twice it is so much fun!

  • Wow nice video. Thanks!

  • grandissimooooooo

  • cool

  • The whole damn band is red hot. Why can't we have TV like this today?

  • Because everyone wants their reality TV and their soap operas.

Seriously. This stuff is so genius.

  • Yeah! This is awsome! We need some more TV like this..

  • ..because everyone is obseed with being FAKE... "my"space, facebook, "i"-pods.. they are obseesed with their fake avatar persona rather than REAL acheivement and creativity.. as a result we have a nation of posers and dreamers rather than artists and builders... see my channel for more info

  • because tv's too easy to do now. you don't have to have quality to be on tv anymore. I wish i was alive back then. Lionel's a beast.

  • @jimeditorial they do. it's called youtube and you're watching dummy

  • @jimeditorial I agree. Good thing we have youtube! Just think of a song and find a rare live recording!

If they would just improve the sound a bit, it would be better than any TV.

  • @jimeditorial

I'll testify to that! The band is smokin'. That's a madman on the bass.

  • @jimeditorial Because the american public would rather watch pretty but talentless twits lip synch, than experience true greatness.

  • @violatione I know it's quite depressing!!!

  • No one could swing on the "vibes" like Hamp!! Fast or slow Hamp could do it all.

His 1947 live version of "Stardust" is considered by many to be the greatest jazz recording of all time.

  • Just wish we could see all the kinescopes from this 1957-58 CBS show. Within weeks of Hamp's live "Big Record" appearance, the Kenton band guested with Patti who sang with the band. On the soundrack I have, she sounds very adaptable to big band jazz. Aside from the corn she was forced to sing, Patti could be a swingin' solid sender.

  • it's one thing to rock on the vibes, but does anyone physically rock out see (1:19) as much at the Lion?

  • whos that lefty guitarist?!?!?!

  • Go, Daddy, Go!!!!!

  • I play mallets, percussion, and drums like Lionel Hampton. This guy was a great musician.

  • Let us hear / see some of your masterpieces then ;-)

  • I'd LOVE to see you play like that, do some vids!

  • i love him! it absolutely great!

  • Is he half-pedaling the entire time?

  • Who is the lefty guitarist here?

  • John William Billy Mackel, he joined the Lionel Hamptons Big Band in 1944.

  • I'm playing this song on alto for my final HSC piece and it just isn't the same without a vibraphone playing. Lionel Hampton is truly talented.

  • When I was like 13 yrs old (1983), Disneyland used to have these Disneyland Jazz weekends and I got to sit right underneath Lionel Hampton at the Carnation Plaza. I was only 13 then, but even then I knew I was in the presence of greatness.

  • Oh! I love Lionel Hampton!

*smiles* LET LIONEL HAMPTON LIFE FOREVER!

  • My Dad told me about thisguy...never erdof him....tragic that more young people don' know about this kind of talent..he's AMAZING !
