Also, who lights a cigarette just before entering their own building only to put it out less than a minute later on their own building's floor. I'm surprised she wasn't a bit scared when she first saw him in the hallway. She just said, "Oh, it's you". At that point, one would realize that he followed her there.

Also, when he said, "I've got no place to go". That's a bogus line because he appeared to have a good amount of cash in his wallet when he was at the bar. He could have stayed at a motel or something with the money he had.
