Porsche has always used 6 cylinders in the 911. The 912 is the same body as a 911 but used the leftover engines from the 356 era. Porsche stop producing 356 bodies in 1965, but had all these leftover engine from the 4 cylinder based 356 and that's how the 912 came about. A real porsche dude would call it a 356(D)
the same happened in 1976 when Porsche decided to discontinue the 914, so it took all the leftover engines and put them into 911 bodied base cars and called it a 912E. this is a good entry into the 911 without spending alot of money on engine work. but to bad this is now a collector's item and they are hard to come by. Call EASY in Emeryville, Ca for Porsche parts and information
1968 somewhere in southern france , hitchhiking. I heard a air cooled motor accerating under load to what it sounded like past the redlkine . I looked around expecting to see a 50 cc motorbike....,...
Nope, it was a 911s. I will never ever forget that sound aond often have dreams about it.
I know the 912 used a flat 4 and I'm pretty sure the 911 e used a flat 4. So I only assumed that the 911 used a more tuned flat 4 until 69 but it is entirely possible I am wrong. I was just wondering :)
why use 46mm on a 2.0, the original IDS Webers were 40mm was this engine in need of more fueling?

Nope, all 911's utilized a 6 cylinder. The only "E" car I know of that used a 4 would have been the 912E in 1976..

I thought that Porsche only used 4 cylinders in the 911 up until late 69 when they switched to the 6?

You are probably thinking of the 912.
