I thought Gary Cherone could sing the hell out of both Sammy and Dave music. Great voice! Gary does look a little awkward as the frontman...just doesn't have that it factor and his antics seem to be forced. Plus I didn't like Van Halen 3, but that is as much Eddies fault for writing bad songs. Gary is definitely living the dream here and loving it!
Did anyone notice how when Cherone jumps into the seats, he lands crotch-first on the wall? Ouch. He clearly misjudged the jump, but he must have had a ton of adrenaline coursing through his veins at that point, because he keeps going and does a pretty good job of hiding the fact that he's just hurt himself badly. He sings well through it all -- the man is clearly a professional ... however it was a pretty foolish move, one I doubt you'd ever see Roth or Hagar make.

No. He's fine. When I heard about how Gary Cherone was such a terrible frontman for Van Halen I went to see it for myself as fast as possible. Guess what? I find him great. Gary is a good singer. The problem is that sometimes things go wrong. I think that the same is happening with Hagar and Satch's band. You can take good musicians and put them to play together,but it can be the case that something goes wrong and it does not work out the way everyone wanted it to be.

Yep for those that say the guitar is out of tune are not used to tuning a half step down to make it easier on the night after night vocals. For this song, I only like DLR, but Cherone is a good singer, as is Hagar. I grew up to David as the singer, so it will always not sound the same when it isn't him.
Ed's guitar isn't that much out of tune, you can't hear Mike's bass so that makes the guitar sound thin. Diehard VH fans will hate this(I am one) but, I thought the BAND sounded their best on this tour! I guess they were all sober! HA! VH RULES!!!!!!!!!

There's a lot of Cherone marks posting here, so go ahead and negative my comment if you must, but Cherone was a laughable choice. Roth and Hagar never had to TRY to be cool, like Gary is. Difficult to do when you're dessed like he's starring on Will & Grace. His tumble down the stairs looks spastic and phony, pretty funny though. Their original tunes with him sounded uninspired, and while Ed was still playing wonderfully, The riffs were devoid of hooks. I suppose it was worth trying.

yeah it does.... or did. name me one hugely popular rock/metal band whose main guitarist or singer had short hair for most of their band career. there are none. they are all seen as having long hair. having long hair was "in" back then, it was cool, at least for huge rock musicians like VH.

This was also in 1998 NOT 1988 ... having gigantic 80's metal hair wasn't exactly "in" at the time either. If you don't want to like Gary Cherone, that's fine... however the length of his hair has NOTHING to do with his ability to be a lead vocalist. He wasn't right for VH for plenty of reasons, hair is not one of them.

i admired david lee roth on the first album but when it came to the 1984 he was so full of himself.
sammy hagar is defntley the best frontman of van halen, proper vocals (strong, dynamic), but in some ways he cant do songs like panama and jump which are van halen classics.

When it comes to singers, what are they when they are just all alone? I think David Lee Roth answered that with his solo projects.
Hagar? Just never liked his stuff solo or otherwise.
Cherone? Best voice and more talent than the other two. Period. I certainly don't blame him for taking the opportunity to join Van Halen. Who wouldn't jump at the chance? But I think Van Halen stopped Gary from doing what he does best. He was trapped in some pre-preconceived box. Not good for real talent.

Sammy was highly successful in his solo carrer, DLR isn't a good live singer, he can't sing Sammy's songs cos he doesn't have the range, VH3 was crap tbh, where was the energy, the speed? and tbh no-one cared about G.Cherone, Sammy owned hands down LWAN proved that.And DLR's an arse, it was his fault he left VH, Sammy was just on the end of EVH while he was on drugs.Chickenfoot are ok though....lol

I was watching this and thinking about the endless arguments are about Van Halen vs Van Haggar, blah, blah, blah. It's all so old.
I loved the original Van Halen, not because it was David Lee Roth, but because whatever it was at that point in time, it worked and it was great. They should have left it alone and not tried to bring it back. That never works. Take a lesson from Seinfeld and quit while the quitting is good.

Yep for those that say the guitar is out of tune are not used to tuning a half step down to make it easier on the night after night vocals. For this song, I only like DLR, but Cherone is a good singer, as is Hagar. I grew up to David as the singer, so it will always not sound the same when it isn't him.

Ed's guitar isn't that much out of tune, you can't hear Mike's bass so that makes the guitar sound thin. Diehard VH fans will hate this(I am one) but, I thought the BAND sounded their best on this tour! I guess they were all sober! HA! VH RULES!!!!!!!!!

It's kinda like when Sammy came into the band, no one liked him in VH either, but they gave him a while and they assimilated to one another

@Rattlehead930 I dig Cherone also. In or out of Van Halen he's got a style that high energy and a vocal range that is damn good. I met him in 1990 or so,when Extreme toured Fresno,Ca. Cool cat,down to earth,was excited meet Nuno but I was impressed with Cherone and his cool friendly attitude.
In some was I wish he were still in Van Halen,but then I'm like that with Sammy also. I like all 3 singers,great music in each era.

There's a lot of Cherone marks posting here, so go ahead and negative my comment if you must, but Cherone was a laughable choice. Roth and Hagar never had to TRY to be cool, like Gary is. Difficult to do when you're dessed like he's starring on Will & Grace. His tumble down the stairs looks spastic and phony, pretty funny though. Their original tunes with him sounded uninspired, and while Ed was still playing wonderfully, The riffs were devoid of hooks. I suppose it was worth trying.
