sheer brilliance. in vocal command, in musicality, in lyrics, in social commentary, insightful at the time and yet ever prescient. from one of our musical giants-- Joni Mitchell. One of my favorites.
I haven't listened to this track for many years but it sounds as good - and prescient - today as it did back in the 80s. As usual Joni Mitchell's intelligence is matched by her talent to create something truly brilliant.
"THE LYRICS ARE LIKE SHE WENT IN THE FURTURE(TODAY) AND WROTE THIS SONG...." What - this was around the time of Live Aid and when many performers were looking to see what to do. This was moving while being more detached than some creations of that time.
There was a terrible famine in Ethiopia in the 80's. And still is a problem to this day. This song was incorporated into Joni Mitchell's ballet "The Fiddle and the Drum". Powerful song.
She had participated in Canada's Ethiopian aid song "Tears Are Not Enough" earlier that year... (a similar effort to "We Are The World" and "Do They Know It's Christmas?") I'm guessing the experience and the spirit of helping that was prominent at the time probably inspired this song.
Okay, I believe this song's musical arrangement just tried to seduce me (and succeeded!) and once I was leered over, Joni delivered me some knowledge.
She always makes great observations on sociopolitical dynamics.

Who says Dog Eat Dog is Joni's worst album? I don't! I say it's one of the best.
Speak for yourself or don't speak at all or else you'll sound like a skipped record, mimicking the misinformed critics.

Except Peter Gabriel and countless others that have lifted their voices in compassion for others. Though I like Joni, I am not going to beatify her.
