Yes, of course because it is the temperature difference that makes the Stirling run. But heating the uoside is more difficult than heating the bottom. So normally the bottom is heated and (if wanted) the upside is cooled, for instance with an ice cube.
@HEETGAS thanks for the reply, So as i understand this, the volume difference between the displacer cylinder and the power cylinder defines the power of the engine, and if the temperature difference defines the speed of the engine, is this correct?

One question: would it run better if you heat up the top side and cool down the bottom (or vice versa) than heating or cooling only one side?
