it's called liquefaction, the accumulation of water combining with the soil, making the soil particles loosen up and move just like water. the way to prevent this is by compacting the soil and removing excess water from it, and constantly maintaining the land, to prevent this from happening. , or by building up a retaining wall around the loose soil and adding a drain to let the water pass, without to much soil,

@diablozzz do people actually build a retaining wall with a drain? because i'd imagine it'd be really hard to just drain the water without draining soil particles. if the soil was also being drained with the water, then i think you would eventually just get a big sinkhole or a very unstable surface and the retaining wall would be useless.
