Well I don't think they die. The house seems to be a manifestation of the items and thier meanings to them(in success endings). Alot of the game can be enterpritted as life/death(starting room=womb, the girl in white's red dress at the end=helping to birth the girls again in that case). But I think only the failure endings are the ones you don't meet the wolf since you march to your metaphorical DEATH/end of the road and never see the rest of the world.

Why does the success ending have to end in death? It's so sad :< I love this game. Its so creepy, yet poetic and beautiful. Each sister teaches you a lesson when they meet the wolf:)

@stickfigureabuse1290 its not actually clear that they die in the end, this game is all about symbolism, its even called "a game about growing up" and the "wolf" they deal with might have something to do with thier problems they have or will encounter and have to face, if you get "success" with all of them you get to play the girl in the white dress, and it ends with you meeting up with your grandma then it goes back to the original house and all the girls come back, its very hard to explain :s

Not to mention it is already inherently disturbing, if solely for the fact that it's emptier than HECK, and the success ending, by comparison, is already made to disturb you so it doesn't.

In my guess, when girls go directly to Grandma's house without walking in the forest and finding those items which make them thinking about their past,memories,sins,all those things in the house (like, for Ruby, basketball court or that cage) are still there, but they're in shadow,hiding in her head... And when the girls find the items,the house is scarier because all of their sins and fears are exposed, brought to light...I don't know.

Why is Grandma's house (As Ruby walks in) so dark? With all the other girls you can see the outline of Grandma's house, windows and doors included, but with Ruby you can't.

This cements my theory that Ruby got into a car with her boyfriend for prom and they wound up slamming into the gym where it was held and died. Hence the leg brace, the car in the woods, and of course the gym and school hallway.

That explains what the hell that thing on her leg is though, because when I first saw it it looked like some weird kind of leg ribbon. But the more I look at it, it does look like a leg brace.

If you watch close enough, you can also see she walks with a slight limp due to the brace. It took me a bit to realize what it was, too.

I noticed that when she went up the bridge, but I wasn't 100% about it being a brace, but still pretty close actually. One interesting concept I've heard is that it is actually prosthetic as opposed to just a leg brace. That actually makes some sense to me, because the normal leg is in fact smaller than the braced/prosthetic leg. However if it were in a brace it should be atrophied.

It's stated on the official website to be a leg brace. You should check it out some day if you're so inclined, there's a lot of really interesting information about how the girls were designed and such. (For example, Rose's design was based on Lain from Serial Experiments Lain)

It's up in the air whether the girls die or not. If you research the game online, a lot of people seem to think that the path is a metaphor for growing up, and the only thing that really dies is the girls' childlike innocence.

In other words, they need to grow up eventually, and if they stay on the path they may not face certain traumatic experiences, but they also won't move forward in life.

And that is a lot of why I am actually on the fence a bit about this games method of storytelling. For one I tend to see things much more for what they look like rather then what they could be. Also I don't really like the whole Mental Trauma=Growing up thing you just pitched cause it seems like a bucket of bullshit (not trying to offend). Really it seems more Hardships - The amount of help available + Time to overcome them= Maturity= Growing up.

This is why I DO like the game. You're interpretation is every bit as valid as mine. I prefer not being told what to think when it comes to a vague story. If you and I can have completely differing ideas, and still both be correct (as there's no 100% right conclusion), I think that's more interesting than the game saying AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED THE END.

to validate how a story can be better if its up to your imagination, just look at the book"It"by steven king.

the book was vauge, leading me to this conclusion

There are different rooms in Granny's house depending on which girl you play, each one with a different interpretation. Doesn't it seem awkward that a girl with a leg brace would find a basket ball court? This game doesn't let up with the visual metaphors.
