So much sliding. Maybe the director has something to do with it too...cause in some theaters they became "Il Capel Maestro" now. The music, its style are not very important anymore. Let's all do "show music"! Many singers have to compromise what they learned, to please the boss!
Are you people deaf? Is the audience deaf? I can't tell what note she's singing half the time.... She's screaming a lot of the time. And the D makes me cringe. She's all over the place. She has terrible technique. She has potential with more training, but God, she shouldn't be as famous as she is.

@maa10able I haven't listened to this in a while, so I listened again to see if my opinion changed. I still think she is certainly not known for her coloratura. I think generally it sounds sloppy for a "lyric" or "light lyric" soprano, which ever she may be. The role isn't necessarily bad for her though. Initially I didn't like her. I've really grown to like her more when I think she sings well...i.e. Juliet. I'm certain she would not be this successful without her looks. She is beautiful!!!
@jmsmth14 Since when being beautiful is a bad thing for soprano? As to her success I strongly disagree, may be be looks helped at the beginning of her career but she proved to be one of the best (soprano of the decade - Washington Post). There are a lot of beautiful sopranos out there - do they sing at the best opera houses and give concerts the tickets to which are sold out 14 min? Her success is due to her fabulous, round, evenly produced golden sound and ample power at all registers!
@maa10able Anna needs to uncover the sound a bit at times. I hold her to a higher standard being a lyric when I've heard amazing performances of Price and Caballe, both whom have bigger voiced that are dark and performed bigger rep, do great coloratura. At the end of the day I greatly respect Ms Netrebko. Being a singer is very hard and a very respectable profession. Not every performance is will be perfect, and singing is a continuous learning process. Differences make music so wonderful.
@jmsmth14 - I agree with 09avenger, Netrebko’s voice is very flexible, she can produce great thrills and although her strength in not coloratura, she can sing coloratura very well. Just listen to Sonnambula - Care Compaigne - from her opera Arias CD. That is truly unbelievable – how a person can do this, - a combination of ample power on all notes, both high and low, and beautiful coloratura – that just blew me away!!! I wonder sometimes if she if human!
@jmsmth14 I fully agree with avenger! Since when being beautiful is a bad thing for soprano or any other femaile singer?! You can hear THE VOICE only if a woman is obese like Caballe and really can't boast anything else? If it's embarrassing even to talk about her looks and you can enjoy her singing only if you close your eyes? If a singer has a poor voice, no good looks can help it shine! I agree it could help anybody in the beginning, but singing is about sharing one's soul, emotions...
@serenaluce Physical appearence has become TOO important in opera. I think most would agree with that. I have no problem admitting how beautiful Netrebko is. She sales tickets very well, because she looks like MILF. Haha. I think technically she's not as great as people make her seem. That's not too imply she's the worst singer. I simply don't feel her emotions when she sings mostly, which explains why I'm not her biggest fan. When she says away from bel canto I like her a lot more.
I don't understand here my own language... I could'nt enjoy it without overtitles if I didn't know this opera. Renée Fleming is the best modern Manon.
Off pitch and bland in so many spots. She's trying to embrace the Bel Canto repertoire one by one and it's completely wrong for her, one after the other. When will she stop?
I CAN"T imagine why Grammophon would choose Netrebko to have a Lucia DVD over DESSAY?
I mean Dessay's like one of the best Lucias of today's time. Netrebko is just effortless high note, effortless but not even powerful or stunning. Sometimes you know an effortless Eb isn't the best you can have. A little stress on the note adds so much more pain, like a scream, like a painful cry. Lucia with a clean Eb doesn't really display her pain.
DG has lost its quality. I don't trust DG that much. They have Lang Lang too or Hilary Hahn who plays scholarly but not very artistically. Netrebko is the worst. The MET televised her Lucia to prevent the people from buying the DVD LOL. One of the bad things about Netrebko is that she sells her DVDs and CDs without artistic quality, displays herself as a whore and people think she's a real opera singer. Maybe if she perform for the ignorant people who really mean to her, that's ok. They can
There is no point in stating your argument if you're not going to use logic and reference to musical integrity. Base your argument to against my statement with musical knowledge and understanding, or it will just be meaningless rambling.
Dear, thare's not any sense in your bashing AN and diging up "flaws".She is perfect soprano.Your comparison her with Dessey is just ridiculous. They are too different.Your claiming to be musician does not matter at all.Having read nearly all your lame comments I was convinced you were just one more AN's hater. pls don't answer me.
Spqrmor, how much about opera do you actually know to be able to say that Netrebko is the "perfect soprano"? For instance you can't even spell Dessay. Do you have the score to Manon? Are you familiar with the opera? Can Netrebko even sing on correct pitch in this video? Check with the score and a well tuned piano, she cannot.
I did not mention a word about flaws, I say her coloratura passages are mushed and unclear, her high notes are very very beautiful but that's pretty much it. I recently obtained her "Duets" album with Villazon and her "Netrebko Opera Arias" albums, I must say I am disappointed. Have you listened to Fleming? Freni? Sills? Sutherland? Caballe? Dessay? Do you still say Netrebko is perfect, having listened to the countless other, more "perfect" Manons out there?
Let's face it - nobody but nobody - compares to Beverly Sills who made the role her own and sang this aria when her voice was in its prime in the 1971 recording. Her performance was such a success d'estime she was on the cover of Newsweek at the time as Manon during this aria. When the video came out in the mid-70's sadly she had lost her voice as she once had the most beautiful, expressive voice I ever heard. However Nebrtenko is no worse than the others that have come since Sills.
Simplemente fabulosa. Qué tessitura. Su técnica es perfecta en todas las zonas del registro de soprano. Además es una mujer bellísima y una buena actriz. Se merece todos los elogios.
I don't understand why she rushes either, especially when she takes a breath in the middle of the phrase which Massanet clearly marked as connected with no breath. But I must say, she is definitely out of tune. I prefer her as an actress though.
well, is Netrebko you know, she¨s famous and all, you don¨t like her?. I rather think she¨s a little cold, her face doesn¨t express everything it could, in my humble opinion, r you a singer?, greatings.
out of tune most of the time, absolutely! but then how can this be 'almost perfect'? There was a time when out of tune most of the time meant wretched, unlistenable, and, in the end, unemployed. Helas...times have changed.
when was this time? and when is this soooo obviously out of tune? in live performance, almost NO opera singer sings things perfect everytime, and plenty of singers might sing a half of a half tone under or over pitch because how how you hear an orchestra from a stage and plenty of other things. a lot plays into live performance, and netrebko sparkles here because she can act (and not just in this scene, in scene 2 of act 3 also), and her singing is getting better with time.
She's almost 40, and the voice is deteriorating, JuillHope, thanks to her shoddy technique. No famous soprano of the last 50 years sings as out of tune as Netrebko. Find one example of a live, out-of-tune TeKanawa, von Otter, Wunderlich, Scholl, Margaret Price, or any of scores of other singers. Netrebko sparkles, perhaps, but so does a rural Nevada strip mall.
completely disagree, she is a lil nasal but I also agree with juill, if you had ever been on stage as I am all the time in an Opera situation w/ an orchestra, it is extremely difficult to hear anything! and furthermore she has gained quite a bit of weight since then, but yet still landing leading roles??? going on looks alone. . .I think not, watch her performance of Lucia de Lammamoor at the met, she had gained a lot of weight but still is a leading role!
What does gaining weight have to do with singing in tune? Regarding 'difficult to hear anything', all opera singers face those issues, and few fail as miserably as Netrebko. If you are experienced as you contend, then you might agree that her persistent sharpness and lack of facility are a result of poor technique and nothing else.
I had heard her previous Manon in Vienna and thought she was just good. Here, however, she's amazing! Her full, warm and creamy voice fits Manon very well. Previously I thought she was way too coquettish and vulgar, but now she's really charming! People complain about her being too "showy" and too cute. That's great, since she doesn't forget to sing with accuracy, brilliancy and great style! Now may a Thaïs come after these Manons!
I honestly dont understand what kind of problem some people have with her. she CAN sing exceptionally beautifully the lyric soprano repertory... and being charming is not a crime... or is it...!
I think that her problem is not being charming...is that she dosn't transmits anything whe she she is singing, the voice is beautiful and she looks like a super model but she just dosn't transmits anything
look. I know that people are pissed-off that she is being compared to legends before she even set foot on stage, that pissed me off too initially but it is her management and I don't know the singer who would say no to good management.
I know singers who cannot cope with public relations and that damages her otherwise wonderful potential career, but it is not her problem...
Listen this aria with Natalie Dessay ... and u will understand what is transmit
or listen the Renee Fleming's Russalka and the listen Netrebko singing like robot Russalka
I think that Anna Netrebko can be a legend if she is smart, rest some time and take some acting classes, right now she's just a pretty face with a robot voice
With Dessay and Fleming you mentioned two singers I respect deeply and admire even deeper...
However, I don't think Netrebko's acting is that bad. She was amazing as Adina for instance. Showing progressively how she was falling in love with Nemorino. Her Manon has something childish that the magnificent Dessay is too smart a woman to transmit...
Plus ...I didnt see the lack of acting lessons destroy the career of Sutherland or Pav... For heavens sake, I don't compare... I am just thinking...
FLAT.

3) the D at 2:51 is PERFECT

Her success is due to her fabulous, round, evenly produced golden sound and ample power at all registers!

@maa10able Anna needs to uncover the sound a bit at times. I hold her to a higher standard being a lyric when I've heard amazing performances of Price and Caballe, both whom have bigger voiced that are dark and performed bigger rep, do great coloratura. At the end of the day I greatly respect Ms Netrebko. Being a singer is very hard and a very respectable profession. Not every performance is will be perfect, and singing is a continuous learning process. Differences make music so wonderful.
jmsmth14 1 year ago
@jmsmth14 - I agree with 09avenger, Netrebko’s voice is very flexible, she can produce great thrills and although her strength in not coloratura, she can sing coloratura very well. Just listen to Sonnambula - Care Compaigne - from her opera Arias CD. That is truly unbelievable – how a person can do this, - a combination of ample power on all notes, both high and low, and beautiful coloratura – that just blew me away!!! I wonder sometimes if she if human!
maa10able 1 year ago
@jmsmth14 I fully agree with avenger! Since when being beautiful is a bad thing for soprano or any other femaile singer?! You can hear THE VOICE only if a woman is obese like Caballe and really can't boast anything else? If it's embarrassing even to talk about her looks and you can enjoy her singing only if you close your eyes? If a singer has a poor voice, no good looks can help it shine! I agree it could help anybody in the beginning, but singing is about sharing one's soul, emotions...
serenaluce 1 year ago
@serenaluce Physical appearence has become TOO important in opera. I think most would agree with that. I have no problem admitting how beautiful Netrebko is. She sales tickets very well, because she looks like MILF. Haha. I think technically she's not as great as people make her seem. That's not too imply she's the worst singer. I simply don't feel her emotions when she sings mostly, which explains why I'm not her biggest fan. When she says away from bel canto I like her a lot more.

beautiful to look at, terrible to listen to.

I don't understand here my own language... I could'nt enjoy it without overtitles if I didn't know this opera. Renée Fleming is the best modern Manon.
bellevillemusique 2 years ago
Off pitch and bland in so many spots. She's trying to embrace the Bel Canto repertoire one by one and it's completely wrong for her, one after the other. When will she stop?
Drelnis 2 years ago
Maybe soon. All her endings and most high notes on Lucia emit from popera to heavy metal. Next, she will become a wobble rock singer.
thugman30 2 years ago
lol yeah.
And all of Netrebko's coloratura runs are horrid
Drelnis 2 years ago
DG has lost its quality. I don't trust DG that much. They have Lang Lang too or Hilary Hahn who plays scholarly but not very artistically. Netrebko is the worst. The MET televised her Lucia to prevent the people from buying the DVD LOL. One of the bad things about Netrebko is that she sells her DVDs and CDs without artistic quality, displays herself as a whore and people think she's a real opera singer. Maybe if she perform for the ignorant people who really mean to her, that's ok. They can
thugman30 2 years ago
form an ignorant group and worship Netrebko but if they market Netrebko as the next best thing in Opera, that's mediocrity.

There is no point in stating your argument if you're not going to use logic and reference to musical integrity. Base your argument to against my statement with musical knowledge and understanding, or it will just be meaningless rambling.
Drelnis 2 years ago
Dear, thare's not any sense in your bashing AN and diging up "flaws".She is perfect soprano.Your comparison her with Dessey is just ridiculous. They are too different.Your claiming to be musician does not matter at all.Having read nearly all your lame comments I was convinced you were just one more AN's hater. pls don't answer me.
spqrmor 2 years ago
Spqrmor, how much about opera do you actually know to be able to say that Netrebko is the "perfect soprano"? For instance you can't even spell Dessay. Do you have the score to Manon? Are you familiar with the opera? Can Netrebko even sing on correct pitch in this video? Check with the score and a well tuned piano, she cannot.
Drelnis 2 years ago
Drelnis, you need to see an ear, nose and nose specialist - may be this is your problem???
09avenger 2 years ago
I did not mention a word about flaws, I say her coloratura passages are mushed and unclear, her high notes are very very beautiful but that's pretty much it. I recently obtained her "Duets" album with Villazon and her "Netrebko Opera Arias" albums, I must say I am disappointed. Have you listened to Fleming? Freni? Sills? Sutherland? Caballe? Dessay? Do you still say Netrebko is perfect, having listened to the countless other, more "perfect" Manons out there?

Drelnis , Netrebko is the best soprano of the decade (see Washington Post ) and you are TRUE IMBICILLE - that is for sure !!!
09avenger 2 years ago
The worst Manon.
thugman30 2 years ago
Let's face it - nobody but nobody - compares to Beverly Sills who made the role her own and sang this aria when her voice was in its prime in the 1971 recording. Her performance was such a success d'estime she was on the cover of Newsweek at the time as Manon during this aria. When the video came out in the mid-70's sadly she had lost her voice as she once had the most beautiful, expressive voice I ever heard. However Nebrtenko is no worse than the others that have come since Sills.
outofthebag 2 years ago
Una puesta en escena de una vulgaridad espantosa que arruina todo por no hablar del modo en que Netrebko desafina. Hacer una Manon así es un delito.
Carestini1 3 years ago
The only reason this woman gets ANY work is the way she looks - if she looked like Caballe she'd be unemployed!
Terribly out-of-tune! And the acting is like that of a show pony - Fleming and Dessay outstrip her any day!

THANK YOU. SO TRUE.

You might be...she's out of tune from the very beginning. Her first sustained note should be a G and she sings almost an A-flat.

At which Berlin Opera House is this? It looks like the Deutsche Oper.

it´s almost perfect, but i must say she¨s out of tune most of the time! sorry, i like the costumes.
cantanteporsiempre 3 years ago
out of tune most of the time, absolutely! but then how can this be 'almost perfect'? There was a time when out of tune most of the time meant wretched, unlistenable, and, in the end, unemployed. Helas...times have changed.

i agree
solisef 3 years ago
when was this time? and when is this soooo obviously out of tune? in live performance, almost NO opera singer sings things perfect everytime, and plenty of singers might sing a half of a half tone under or over pitch because how how you hear an orchestra from a stage and plenty of other things. a lot plays into live performance, and netrebko sparkles here because she can act (and not just in this scene, in scene 2 of act 3 also), and her singing is getting better with time.
JuillHope17 3 years ago
She's almost 40, and the voice is deteriorating, JuillHope, thanks to her shoddy technique. No famous soprano of the last 50 years sings as out of tune as Netrebko. Find one example of a live, out-of-tune TeKanawa, von Otter, Wunderlich, Scholl, Margaret Price, or any of scores of other singers. Netrebko sparkles, perhaps, but so does a rural Nevada strip mall.
xgianpatrick 3 years ago
completely disagree, she is a lil nasal but I also agree with juill, if you had ever been on stage as I am all the time in an Opera situation w/ an orchestra, it is extremely difficult to hear anything! and furthermore she has gained quite a bit of weight since then, but yet still landing leading roles??? going on looks alone. . .I think not, watch her performance of Lucia de Lammamoor at the met, she had gained a lot of weight but still is a leading role!
Dressur24 2 years ago
What does gaining weight have to do with singing in tune? Regarding 'difficult to hear anything', all opera singers face those issues, and few fail as miserably as Netrebko. If you are experienced as you contend, then you might agree that her persistent sharpness and lack of facility are a result of poor technique and nothing else.

isabelbleuet 3 years ago
I had heard her previous Manon in Vienna and thought she was just good. Here, however, she's amazing! Her full, warm and creamy voice fits Manon very well. Previously I thought she was way too coquettish and vulgar, but now she's really charming! People complain about her being too "showy" and too cute. That's great, since she doesn't forget to sing with accuracy, brilliancy and great style! Now may a Thaïs come after these Manons!

Great voice, great actress, great DIVA. Merveilleuse tout simplement.
QUETZALCOM 4 years ago
I honestly dont understand what kind of problem some people have with her. she CAN sing exceptionally beautifully the lyric soprano repertory... and being charming is not a crime... or is it...!
CONTESTAR 4 years ago
I think that her problem is not being charming...is that she dosn't transmits anything whe she she is singing, the voice is beautiful and she looks like a super model but she just dosn't transmits anything
Heartlessiceboy 4 years ago
what is the definition of "transmit"???
look. I know that people are pissed-off that she is being compared to legends before she even set foot on stage, that pissed me off too initially but it is her management and I don't know the singer who would say no to good management.
I know singers who cannot cope with public relations and that damages her otherwise wonderful potential career, but it is not her problem...
CONTESTAR 4 years ago
Listen this aria with Natalie Dessay ... and u will understand what is transmit
or listen the Renee Fleming's Russalka and the listen Netrebko singing like robot Russalka
I think that Anna Netrebko can be a legend if she is smart, rest some time and take some acting classes, right now she's just a pretty face with a robot voice
Heartlessiceboy 4 years ago
With Dessay and Fleming you mentioned two singers I respect deeply and admire even deeper...
However, I don't think Netrebko's acting is that bad. She was amazing as Adina for instance. Showing progressively how she was falling in love with Nemorino. Her Manon has something childish that the magnificent Dessay is too smart a woman to transmit...
Plus ...I didnt see the lack of acting lessons destroy the career of Sutherland or Pav... For heavens sake, I don't compare... I am just thinking...

Bravissima ANNA, even she was fat and ugly, singing like that would be remarkable
