I tried the treat thing and my horse looked at me wierd and was like, "You've got to be kidding me, right?" Shasta is a headstrong haflinger that just needs a little encouragement...
lol that was cute at first it was like he was saying "omg just leave me alone" then wen he layed down the second time he was like "ok im down here now wheres my treat?"
Tip: I am sure your lay down cue has become very refined by now, but in the future, when you are just starting a horse on any command, he or she should be rewarded with at least a release of pressure when he starts to try. You can do it this way, and force the horse to understand it, but when you let him realize it little by little on his own, he will have more respect for you and that is never a bad thing, right? For this instance, the first "try" is looking down.
Ok thx, the ropes not really the problem though its just when i pull the rope she doesn't go down she kinda does this hop thing with her front feet intead of goin down!
well i started with a lot of trust games. Like tarps and stuff then gradually got him used to having his hoof in a sling position. I mean hes gentle and he hopped at first but after his first time laying down i smothered him in treats and pats and "GOOD BOY" haha and he learned thats what i wanted.....keep trying good luck. Let me know how it goes!
well i try to make it to where it doesnt give him rope burn or get to tight. i dont wanna hurt my baby so tie it sorta loose and not a slip knot. Also you might try vet wrap around his ankle so he doesnt get rubbed :)
im a jerk?? howcome? because my horse trusts me soo much to lay and let me get on his back? i mean i dont understand how this is cruel at all haha he was NEVER hurt i would never ever ever hurt my cadillac. And hes moved up from ropes now.....hes getting close to doing it on command
You are doing an awesome job! Ignore the negative comments--you are not hurting him with the ropes at all and you can tell how much you love him and he so trusts you to be able to do it. Awesome for a young girl!!
thankyou, i dont understand at all how people think its cruel. And cadillac wouldnt lay if he didnt trust that nothing bad would happen i loooovvveeeee him so much. And hes not using ropes anymore :) he loves laying down too. In the summer he rolls around and eats! haha i can lay on him and walk over him now. He trusts soo much.
im going to be posting more videos of cadillac hes doing great. but he slipped on the ice last saturday and his ankle is hurt. So after i baby him through his boo boo and hes better i will post videos of him laying and me laying ontop of him. probably closer to spring though so hes not in the mud like this video and neither in the snow.
aw, cute horse! he's tall! can tell u care very much for him...i think i'll try that with my pony, becuase I'm not strong enough to get him to lay down my hand lol!
If this is only his secound day he SHOULD have gotten a treat! You need to take this step my step, as to WHY you have to use to much force on him! He did what you asked and by not prasing him he won't know that what he did was right!

He seemed to figure out he was doing it right.
But she want sto teach him to lay down, and stay down, but he got up. So he didn't deserve a treat, he didn't do it right.
I understand what you're saying, but he seems to understand how to lay down. She's done well.
ViraTehFreak 3 years ago
always reward every little effort. Next time ask for a bit more, but don't save the treat for the final work or you'll frustrate the horse
