I would be frustrated if I were that ATC and trying to communicate with lots of pilots and being stuck on this one because he can't understand simple english, I don't know how the airlines in china recruit..

But I still think a pilot needs to master English. Though the question wasn't in the standard flight communication language, it was very basic usage of english, and the pilot had no excuse to not have understood that. It's horrible, a real real scandal, plus the interviewed English teacher said " The tower trollers didn't not use standard language." ...I wont say its a shame for China, but its a shame for the chinese airline.

I think the pilot answered " roger, cleared to the gate" like 3 times, but the controller just kept asking the same question over and over again like he's just pretending not to understand the pilot.

When did the pilot answer "cleared to the gate", and 3 times??? no, the first sentense from that pilot was a "errr, *=()&/(R$W!""§....

He wasn't speaking in oxford english, but clearly said, cleared to the gate 3 times.

You mean he answered "errrr, cleared to the gate" the first time when he was asked? That was not understandable! It was not English at all. But where were the other 2 times? If he really has understood the question, he could have answered "Yes!"(ok, thats not standard communication language so the pilot boy didnt say yes.)

My guess, the pilot didnt understand the question at all, so said the english teacher as well...

No , I'm not joking. 1st time he said, " roger, cleared to the ramp, china981", 2nd time, " ok, cleared to the ramp", the 3rd time, " roger to the gate, air china 981". I don't understand why the controller kept asking and asking.

you answer 'roger' to command or information, not question

because the pilot is asking if the people clear the pilot to the gate, and he was suppose to answer yes or no, but instead he said something else

Even after the pilot said, " ok , we hold here", the controller still said, " anybody speak english today? " Which part of " ok, we'd hold here " didn't the controller understand?

The pilot's responses sounded like he had taken the question as a CONFIRMATION. "ok, clear to the ramp" is very different from "cleared to the ramp". Even a "yes, clear to the ramp" sounds better here.

hehe, But you are definitely right about the "hold there". The tower controllers werent very rational there.

It's easy to watch American TV shows  in mainland nowdays. It could be the most convenient way learning U.S. accent english. And what else I can say? The school language education is impractical. It's a shame.

He said they didn't use standard RKO language. Maybe he's right. I think there shoud be some standard phrases or sentences to use, and somehow the man at the tower was speaking in everyday casual english.

I agree. Especially the frist question from the tower controller was " have they cleared you into the ramp?"  There seemed to be a communication problem between the tower controllers. The speaking controller wasnt sure if "they"(other controllers?) have reported of clearance to the gate.I guess the disaster in 1977 between KLM and Pan Am was also 60% the fault of the two tower controllers.

不是每個機師都用中文的

而外國人學中文的少 東方人學英文的多

(中國台灣新加坡日本都有英文課吧..)

在這種地方自然是統一用英文了

I have been landing in USA, Central America, Brazil 3 (English, Spanish and Portuguese)different languages and still there is common english languange...i still do not get get why an ATP can not get basic english.

就向中文中数字7，在无线电通话中要读拐，不能读七，因为无线电­噪音大容易误听为一，之所以要制定特殊的规范就是为了防止错听保­证安全，所以在民航的陆空对话中的语音规则是和日常对话不一样的­，这就是为了保证安全。

Chinese is the most popular language on the Earth. Believe it or not, Mandarin will replace the situation of English sooner or later.
