eww nasty. my dell inspiron 100 hard drive was doing the same thats why i changed it to a 80GB one.

yes, my lid is also starting to crack at the hinges... due to overtightened hinge screws according to the multiple threads i've found on the 56xx.

Damn I had the same problem with my sager 5680 , hard disk was a toshiba started making that noise afterwards died, and my DVD drive as well which was err.. should I say FUCKING TOSHIBA! I HATEEEEEEEEEEE TOSHIBAAAA . I had to replace both units , now I got a DVD drive Pioneer and samsung hd working without any problems. what I really hate bout this machine it's the fan noise

Had same problem with mine. I can't believe I paid over 2K for this POS. The cooling was inadequate, and louder than hell!
