part 3- The priest explained that Sheldon tired of flying rescue missions up there only to find frozen mountain climbers so he built the cabin himself as a shelter from a sudden storm for climbers or bush pilots in trouble.... They stayed up most of the night watching a spectacular "Northern Lights" show in the sky. Sheldon was all apologies in the morning but Kuralt suspected that Sheldon saw some guys that were in too much of a hurry and decided to slow them down.... and He didn`t mind a bit.
part 2-After coffee Sheldon informed Kuralt that he had bad news. He said that the snow was too slushy and they were too heavy to take off with 4 men, 2 would have to stay behind but that he had a cabin up there occupied by a priest who would likely welcome company. So Izzy Bleckman, Kuralt`s cameraman for 20 years or so and Charles himself volunteered to stay. They hike a half mile or so to the cabin and found the priest to be an amiable sort who did not mind sharing his whiskey.
My friend had a fantastic photo of this cabin and the spectacular view and we wondered who would build a place like this. It was years later when reading one of Charles Kuralt`s "On the Road" books that he mentioned being stranded in Don Sheldon`s cabin by Don himself. Kuralt and his crew hired Sheldon to fly them around for some pictues of Denali. When Don took them down for coffee on the glacier they were dumbstruck by the beauty and thrilled at the fact that they landed on a mountain .
This is a great video of what has to be just about the coolest place on earth. Thanks for putting it up.
