  • every time i use the tool while the screw is in the cork i end up breaking the top of the bottle. what am i doing wrong?

  • victory in 10 min! lol

  • popping might indicate fermentation or wine stored either to cold or to hot.turn the corkskrew not the bottle.only go halfway down the cork and flip the cork and press hafway down the neck to seal the bottle.never shake the bottle and let wine breath before serving.

  • after half a fuckin hour i opened it. my muscles hurt more than after hardcore gym session. lol. victory

  • I actually didn't want the popping, pulled it out slow! And I tried for 20 mins...yeah that is lame! xD

  • jeez i wish i'd watched this video, i pulled my damn shoulder out of socket and i'm in a world of lame-ass pain

  • you never turn the bottle while opening it... not professional at all..

  • @DejanS73 Doesn't say "how to professionally open a bottle for some elite scum" - says "how to open wine bottle" Mission accomplished. ;)

  • @lukellu just for information, why you shouldn't make the popping sound in a restaurant? is it considered bad manners or something like that?

  • still wont open guess im gonna have to use my teeth

  • Thanks- it's so easy once you know how

  • Thank you. My first bottle ever

  • I have never opened a bottle of wine, but needed to tonight. This video saved the day, and the meal will be a success!

  • @MysticDMBherb me too!!

  • the thing that this video doesnt help is... in the restaurant (where i work) you CANNOT put the bottle of wine on the TABLE so its always a challange trying to put the corkscrew in the middle while trying not to drop the bottle of wine... this is what i came here to learn.. but you placed the wine bottle on the table..

  • Super helpful! Thank you.

  • @BPICK1500 Hi, i still cant get the hang of opening a bottle of wine. I have viewed this video 18 times but still cannot get the hang of it. Is there any way you can give me about 5 tips to help me.

You can number the tips from 1 to 5 OR a to e (if there are 5 tips, it would be a to d if there were 4), or i,ii,iii,iv, v.

I have friends coming round this wednesday for dinner and i would love to get some tips before.

I may try screw tops, but i like collecting corks and keyrings. Wine is GREAT!!

  • A life lesson at 32:) Thanx A million public urinations!:)

  • Is this allowed to twist a boddle while removing the cork?:S

  • tnx!

  • ta errado0 meu caro0 nunca gire a garrafa !!

  • 1 - Jamais girar a garrafa

2 - Evitar estalar a rolha (som ao abrir)

  • Wow thanks a bunch! I have the same waiter corkscrew and I couldn't figure out how to get he cork out so I ran upstairs and took a look at this vid and it all made sense! Finally got the cork out, thanks a bunch!

  • I wish I had this seven years ago. I remember after I bought my first bottle of wine, the whole cork ended up floating in the wine. Don't ask me how that happened because I have no idea! :)

  • Yeah, just open a bottle of wine!! :) Sqweek, POP! and serve! Never buy a Dollar-Store opener, they break, cheap chinese plastic parts!! I've even had a screw "unscrew" in the cork and ended up like this: _________, lol

  • VERY HELPFUL.

  • @Kiyohne come on mate

    everybody knows this shit

  • It worked!, thanks a lot. You just taught me how to open a wine bottle.

  • Interesting.

  • Wow, now you should make a video of how to light a match

  • Thanks very much, I don't care if that this isn't the "proper" way to open a bottle, it did the trick now i am a happy trooper with an open bottle of wine ^^

  • Wow- this Wine Spectator guy has never held a waiter job in a reputable restaurant or hotel.

    1. never twist the bottle to cut the foil

    2. never twist the bottle when uncorking

    3. didn't even mention the customer rituals. Please disregard this video.

  • @edgarenas Hi, i have just uploaded a comment for some advice. Can you send me some tips about how to open a bottle. I am not popular with a crowd of friends, but i feel if i can practice etiquette, then these future friends (hopefully) will want to get to know me. I dont really like the taste of wine, but while they drink wine, i would drink a blackcurrant cordial (eg. ribena). I do like Lambrini. They should make more fizzy wines.

Please send some advice. Many thanks in advance.

  • As I was saying...hahahahaha wipe the top of the bottle and serve... so much more involved if this is an old wine or an unfiltered wine that has sediment.... I could go on and on... this is my passion and kills me when people just "act" like they know what they are doing... working at a restaurant doesn't make you a sommelier! Ugh!

  • Ok, I have looked and looked... NO ONE on You Tube knows how to open up a wine bottle correctly. First cutting the foil off, you cut one side, then you twist your hand with palm facing up to cut the second half. Then you cut up to the middle of cork on foil with knife and then you take the foil off. Then you use your pointer finger on the end of the cork screw to guide it in the middle of the cork... after the cork is taken off, you smell both sides of cork to make sure it is sane. more...

  • You can tell i don't drink wine.

    1. I'm watching this video.

    2. I ripped up the cork and broke the glass on neck of the bottle.

I'm glad it's cheap shit wine for someone else or i'd have killed a whole bunch of people. Ok i'm lying about that part but i would be quite pissed.

  • duuude this is a piece of cake.. i could do this when i was 10 years old

  • Thank you.

  • tks to this vid, I jst opened 1 wine bottle for the 1st time :x :D

  • You make it look so easy.

  • See with my wine, i twist the cap and OMG ! i can drink it.

  • oh you could just drink beer or spirits and make it easier for yourself

  • That was not so perfect bottle opening, but its good for to know:

    1. u don;t twist the bottle while cutting the cover

2.when you are puling the cork out, go slowly and try to avoid that 'pop' of the cork on the end and do not rotate the bottle while opening

    3. in high class restaurant, when the waiter opens a bottle of wine for you, He will put the cork on a small plate in front of you.

But this is from my view only, at home you can open a bottle in your own way.

    cheers!!!

  • Yay! Got it, thank you for the help

  • for all the folks who criticize this guy for turning the bottle or popping the cork: get a life. You obviously know how to open a bottle, but you're also far too lazy to post a better video.

For people actually looking for information on how to use one of these suckers, this is a pretty decent effort. I disagree that you should aim for the center of the cork; a slightly-off angle actually works better. He also demonstrated an "articulated lever" corkscrew, but the illustration was a single.

  • nice! :) I just looked for some tips because I got a really recalcitrant bottle of wine tonight and I was searching for some help. You did not fix my problem (because I only got a corkskrew with just a spiral and I didn't got it, was to hard to pull or screw it out. I just pushed the cork inside....) but thank you for this great tip!

  • This was very helpful! Thank you!

  • that popping sound should not be made when opening infront of someone in a restaurant. i work in a 5 star restaurant.. i have experince..

  • @lukellu And I suppose you would like some type of prize? Maybe the congressional Medal of Honor? I'll write a letter to congress right away and see what they can do for you.

  • @lukellu And maybe you should learn how to spell :)

  • @lukellu then why are you looking up/watching videos on how to open a bottle of wine? lol

  • @lukellu: you sound like a pompous ass... i have experience...

  • @lukellu Wow, do people have their heads so far up their ass that they care about a popping noise?

  • dawm.. like everyone else i came here as of yesterday i tried so hard to open a bottle of wine.. and finally gave up, my another dude done it finally after some struggle.. just came here to see the right procedure... !!

  • thanks that was explained very straightforward!

  • got it the second time after watchin ur video...thanx

  • THIS IS NOT HOW YOU OPET A WINE BOTTLE !

    TEH VIDEO IS FAKE !

  • haha I got some wine that I had no idea how to open but it seemed like the cork type, I watched this video to figure out how to open it and I removed the metal cap to find not a cork but something red blocking it up. At first I thought it was just wax so I continued to follow the instructions in the video, it turned out to be a solid wedge of plastic and I felt like I almost broke my corkscrew in the process! but it still worked amazingly!

  • everything iss f**king wrong...

  • I refer to the movement of the bottle. The bottle must remain static. Only the corkscrew that moves. Turn the corkscrew and not the bottle. If wine were a reserve, this movement could spoil all the wine with the sediment that would blend with the liquid.

  • Terrible !!! Never move the bottle

  • @Giachetti11 you're wrong. you should twist the bottle at least 2 full turns so that that corkscrew is firmly into the cork. If you don't, you may not get good placement of the corkscrew and the top will look awful when you remove the corkscrew from the cork.

  • @amdevor no no no, you put the screw on the tip of the cork and turn it counter clockwise then with your other hand you have to wiggle the bottom of the wine key while simultaneously tilting the bottle at approximately 25 degree. jk

lol its a bottle of wine, not calculus. its the easiest thing to do, like a waitress. Screw it in then pull it out and enjoy

  • @amdevor I refer to the movement of the bottle. The bottle must remain static. Only the corkscrew that moves. Turn the corkscrew and not the bottle. If wine were a reserve, this movement could spoil all the wine with the sediment that would blend with the liquid.

  • thanks man

  • I didn't know opening a wine bottle was a skill?

  • ha im trying to open a bottle i have in my hands, it certainly aint that easy as i have a shitty corkscrew, its a kitchen type on e i think so it cant just easily "lift" like that one did

  • Or, you could look like a total asshole and mess it all up in front of a chick....and then come here later and watch the right way to do it.

  • @LtStarkiller: yep... found this a little too late. Serves me right for not sticking with beer and whiskey.

  • @LtStarkiller hahahahahaha

  • thanks mr, man!!! we finally learned the right way of how to open our bottle of wine!

  • Or the alternative if you don't have one of those:

Take a pen or a spoon. Put the bottle between your legs and pres the pen or the spoon with all your strenght down into the bottle. It can be hard to serve, because the cork floats and blocks the opening, but don't worry, because you can stick the spoon down the bottle while you are pouring so that the opening remains unblocked.

That's all for this time! :P

  • thank you so much!!!!

  • geesh, thanks for this video. i couldn't open my bottle of champagne and it's new years!

  • champagne is way different dude... You should just have to take the foil off, then with a thumb or hand over the cork(so that no one loses an eye) unscrew the wire, then remove the wire, then the cork should just need a little nudging to come off... Someone told me that shooting the cork off is not the best way to open your champagne either as it screws with the taste somehow, therefore opening it quietly and gently is preferred.

  • lol, i meant, riesling, not chamagne!! it was new years and i was not in my right mind. (and i'm a woman!)

  • Guys...dnt followe this man bcz he dosn't know rules what we have to followe when we going to open a btl of wine.......what this bastard saying is nt right...never turn the bottle when you open a btl of wine bcz if u turn or shake the sediment will com up and then u will have to keep da bottle long time till sediment go back to bottom or u have to use a decenter..and also when you pull out the cork shouldn't come sound...cheers....indi 0094725967510

  • fuck the Mayas and their 2012.....this is some good shit!.....amazing!

  • Hey there. WOW!. I can't believe i didn't know how to use that tool. I thought the leverage apparatus was actually a beer bottle opener, LOL. Thanks for saving me the embarrassment in the future, or making me look really cool infront of all the other people who dont know. LOL. Thanks Bud!

  • @o10139kea

Me too, I thought that part is for opening beer, which I believe it is anyway. But I always struggled with opening wine. Now I know better.

    Thanks for the video!!!

  • whats dis rolling the bottel,,,wrooong......

  • great video!

  • I was told in hotelery school that we should always avoid that "nice poping sound". Instead we should tilt the cork to the side so the air gets in the bottle nice and slowly. Otherwise if the bottle is filled almost to the top it might spill some wine.

I have a question why cut the metal capsule under the rim and not over it? When I cut it under the rim I tend to drop a little drop of wine if I'm not carefull.

  • amazing, hes so intelligent, never saw it befor

thats the best idea to open a wine bottle

  • awesome... but what do i do about the blood?

  • can you please make a video showing me how to breathe? please fast! i'm suffocating....arrrghh...

  • My life will change from now on!

    THANK YOU !

  • thank youuuu!!!!

    SoOoOoO HeLpFuL!@$)~*!@~()&$

  • or u can just shake it

  • - that is wrong, you can not spin the bottle to cut the capsule.

    - the cork must no chink, clang.

-the hand must move always and

the bottle should not be rotated,

because the label on the bottle must be opposite the diner.

    Thank you!

  • Your analysis is awfully petty. He got the bottle opened and in fluent fashion, period.

  • fuck... i'm dumb

  • Jesus....why do all turn the dam bottle dude...., no turns!!! no pops!!!! please.....

  • Don't take the Lord's name in vain.

  • Stinking fart - you shouldn't get a pop from a wine bottle!!

  • boy, did you never ever see a bartender to open a bottel? Why on earth do you need a video about how to open a bottle of wine?!?!

  • Well why exactly are YOU looking at this video then, oh-wise-one?

  • Just buy one electric extractor and forget all that crap!

  • lol just had to look this up cause i'm having this exact problem right now.

    Guess I have a cheap corkscrew and I'm a wuss :(

  • I usualy have to just Punch the Cork Into the wine bottle Causing the wine to Shit up into my face, but hey, it works.

  • You too, you cut the foil by turning the bottle! WRONG WRONG WRONG!

The foil is cut WITHOUT turning the bottle!(I did not make this up myself)

  • Just reminding you that you are arguing with the Senior Wine editor or Food and Wine magazine. I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

  • There is NO argument. the foil is cut with the bottle STATIONARY, it's been ALWAYS like this.

Next time when you visit a Michelin starred restaurant with a proper sommelier, you'll know the correct way to open a wine bottle.

All I can say about this "Senior Wine editor", he's not up to his job because he does not even know how to open a wine bottle.

  • lol zhammmy way to go, I'm proud of you for speaking against "The man"

If it's wrong and he's supposedly great, it needs to be said that he's wrong, and not "as great."

  • @knut no he doesn't.... what a joke. Titles do not make a sommelier! He does NOT know how to open a bottle of a wine properly, he just knows how to open a bottle of wine... kinda like a guy... he thinks he knows how to do a chick... but he really doesn't "know" how to do a chick! hahahahahahahahahahahah

  • @iamgoinghigher watch?v=iulGJePUpqY I think this guy does :)

  • i'm 100% with you on this one!!

  • NICE..

  • its not as easy as it seems!!!

  • practice makes perfect!!! cheers

  • wow, this is great.

we tried it just right now, yet it didn't work.

but that may be because we tried we already stuck the screw in three times before watching this video.

oh wait, we just broke the cork in half. so we got half the cork out. and we thought the knife was to cut cheese with the wine, but i guess its to unseal the cap.

maybe you should post a video called "How to Unscrew a Wine Bottle After You Screwed Up the First 3 Times, then Break the Cork in Half, Like a Pro"

  • ROFL

  • hahahha you should have been there watching us.

  • "...the knife was to cut cheese with the wine," LOL you are too funny! hahaha

  • @dcshoecoblue Fucking moron.

  • I just usually peel the whole thing.

  • I actually didnt know how those things worked the first time I did this

  • same, looked like a right idiot in front of my colleagues.

  • its better not to make the "pop" sound and to turn your hand instead of the bottle...

  • That's true! Some poeple say that it 'ruins' the wine when the cork pops.
