Quayle was obviously unprepared to answer the first (amazingly, in a VP debate!!!) so he chose to answer the 2nd instead (he prepared for that one but still fumbled).

In reality, one could argue Kennedy, a war monger who lied about missle gap to gain the White House, expanded the cold war, created circumstances leading to Cuban Missile Crisis, and repeatedly increased Vietnam troop numbers, was very much like Bush/Quayle.
If Bentson didn't know this, he clearly knew nothing about Kennedy.

He was brought on to "balance" the ticket: Dukakis being a northeastern liberal, and Bentsen, a southerner with more conservative views. Bentsen was a very respected member of the Senate, and many believe should have headed the ticket. He briefly served as Clinton's Treasury Secretary before retiring from public service. He died in 2006 at age 85.

McCain met Palin just Once before her nominated her for VP. One of the best, if not THE best debate moments in a Presidential race. There is no better example of Quayle's ineptness than this video. More examples existed in this debate (not this video). But the fact that GOPers rallied around him like he scored some victory was even more telltale. No better example in my lifetime of pushing a candidate merely due to his party. Bad video quality.

McCain doesn't think much of the Vice Presidency. He said before that it's for attending funerals and checking on the president's health. He was joking, of course, but he really doesn't think too highly of the position. That may explain some why he picked someone for show horse purposes. Palin has things going for her, but she would not be making real decisions or policy at all. Not like say Gore or Cheney.

One of the best, if not THE best debate moments in a Presidential race. There is no better example of Quayle's ineptness than this video. More examples existed in this debate (not this video). But the fact that GOPers rallied around him like he scored some victory was even more telltale. No better example in my lifetime of pushing a candidate merely due to his party. Bad video quality.

Just as a technical note, Dan Quayle did NOT serve for the same number of years as JFK. Quayle served for twelve, and Kennedy for fourteen. Other than that though, I will cede that Quayle wasn't trying to compare himself to JFK.

All this showed was how no one ever did or ever will vote based on who the Vice President is. Bush Sr. knew that and knew he would wipe out Dukakis anyway and he did. Quayle was some factor, but not much and based on staff memoir accounts of the time - Quayle was a pretty solid VP.

In fact Quayle had served 4 years (1976-1980)in the House and 8 years in the Senate (1980-1988)and Kennedy had 6 (1946-1952) in the House and 8 in the Senate (1952-1960) so they were about the same experience at the same age. Bentsen had that line ready to use as a knockout. Quayle hadnled himself as well as he could.
