@fatfacerick They do not count as evidence in a court case because you may react to the question rather then what you answer.. Ie. They do however at times use it to dertimine wether they should investergate a person futher, based on the reading..

@texasfran well the audience has no real need to know what's gonna happen. So why tell them anyway? It would be better not to tell them so they would react. I mean their reaction was a bit wierd but they were probably confused and thought it could be part of the act.
@sonyerectson no better than David Blaine? Get out, derren is much higher skilled.. And what do you mean by Russian roulette scam? I saw that programme, are you referring to the gun having blanks in it? So what? That programme wernt faked.
@god0fgod Obviously there was a "magic trick" to this, involving Camelot. @computersolutions164 It was likely a camera trick. You can see examples of a overlay effect on youtube which shows an easy way it could have been done. The balls shown on screen were a static overlay while people wrote numbers on them as the lottery numbers came out. When Derren came over to show the numbers that people just wrote on the balls, the overlay was taken off to show the live footage of the balls.
"the audience has no idea about what could happen" fry gets shot and not 1 person thinks its a good idea to leave. yeah right. im a derren brown fan but this hard to belive

Derren has decried polygraph tests in his book 'Tricks of the Mind', so it is interesting to see him seemingly accept them as proof of the subjects culpability (or not). All part of the show methinks.
I do think this programme proves an important point about the validity of these techniques and their power in the wrong hands.
Derren has been making the best TV for years now. An utter genius.
polygraph tests are unreliable and the person being tested can make it show whatever results he wants. people can control their heart rate and breathing.
@peterabbid no not all the time. There are such things as 'micro-expressions' and the lying test is similar. When you are lying, subconsciously your body does things that you don't realise or that you cant help. For example, people tend to scratch their nose when they lie in a subconscious attempt to 'cover up' their mouths, or glancing downwards briefly if you are ashamed of something and you wouldnt realise you are doing this unless you are trained to be conscious about this or you have botox.
@FreljilTheHungi Oh of course, yeah, they're are things you can't hide but I think purely using the polygraph machine is unreliable because the responses that it's measuring/observing are the ones that can be controlled through meditation or other ways, and therefore you can control the results. But micro-expressions definitely can give everything away if you're trained to see that :)
@peterabbid We have a horrid little man over here called Jeremy Kyle, who runs a "Jerry Springer" type of show and swears blind that a polygraph is 96% accurate, what he forgets to say is that is you put someone in a studio, with cameras and lights and a live audience, all there to "bait" the person concerned, chances are the polygraph will NOT give accurate results, as the person is not going to be relaxed when they take the test, if they know it is going to come out in front of an audience.
@computersolutions164 Ah yes, Jeremy Kyle. haha, I don't understand how anyone can take those shows seriously anyway. Of course people are going to be anxious if you ask them something like DID YOU SLEEP WITH YOUR GIRLFRIENDS BROTHER? knowing people believe you did is going to make you anxious haha. It's all flawed :P
@peterabbid Exactly - And Jeremy Kyle gets of on it too !!! Having said that it's still fun to watch the less fortunate amongst us making fools of themselves and getting a £90 appearance fee to do so.
I'm sure after each show Mr Kyle goes home and has a good hard W**K afterwards.
That's probably why he has suddenly turned into a "Game Show" host too, with a game called "High Stakes". Not sure whose idea at ITV it was to buy this in but they ought to be boiled alive until their eyes pop!
@peterabbid Yes that's true but how do you control your own skin resistance and the amount you sweat, when being measured. I believe that is one of the other things a polygraph measures.
@computersolutions164 oh good point, I think there are ways of getting around it like working yourself up whilst being read the control questions so the increased sweat/heart rate etc are the same for all questions? i'm not sure if that would work with sweat though.
@FrankieGotz Well Derren has built up a reputation for putting a lot of effort into his work. What would be the point in doing it badly ? Nobody would watch it if it were done badly. The candidate selection was the best bit for me, especially with the "acid" in the face bit. They all reacted the same way, even though they were not told the acid had been replaced with water.
Derren has built up a reputation for putting effort into his work, sure... but the lottery stunt? he got slated for that one... why isn't he a euromillionaire with 100,000,000s.... ?
@Fraternity187 the lottery one was old fashioned magic/camera tricks. everyone thinks all his tricks are amazing mind psychology, but while a lot of them are, he also, as he says before every single episode, fuses that with magic, misdirection etc.
if he guesses a number and then the number was also written in an envelope the whole time, then he probably guessed the number through genuine mind techniques, but planted the envelope with traditional magic techniques.
Derren admits to using a mix of psychological techniques alongside your usual illusions used in magic. However, he refuses to use stooges, If this was fake, imagine the kind of money that someone could blackmail out of Derren for his career to remain intact.
@biologyprodigy I bet you wouldn't - You'd be in a state of shock at what you had just seen, so you would probably be rooted to your seat. You would not make a run for it at all.
@computersolutions164 bulls*** it could of been a terrorist attack or whatever people always panic or run. No one even looked worried, if it was real then everyones head would of been glued on where the shot came from. half of them were facing foward.
@sonyerectson Derren Brown has never faked anything. I admit this is hard to believe but why fake it now? It IS possible. And the "actors" clearly aren't actors, just stunned confused audience members.
@Moncantha use your BRAIN. Remember that Stephen is a COMEDIAN. AND, my sister was at this performance and she said that she honestly thought at first it was a comedy act of his. but then she became shocked and didnt know what to do. Im sure the majority of normal people were also too shocked to know what happened. If someone threw a rock at your head but missed you wouldnt think straight away 'a hooligan is attacking me!' straight away would you? your first reaction would be more like 'wtf?'
@FreljilTheHungi right so if someone threw a rock at my head i would stand there and be like wtf? No i'd turn around and see where it came from then try and get the person who done it. And your sister wasn't there. Only a complete cretin would believe all this stuff. Derren is a showman.
@Moncantha you are telling me that you have superhuman reactions now, eh? you would NOT instantly know someone tried to throw a rock at you, it is impossible to do that without your brain spending at least 0.9 seconds processing the situation you are in (yes, i know this stuff). And also, you are telling me that my sister was not there when she was? alright, mr know it all, fair enough. My sister wasn't there then. have a nice day.
@FreljilTheHungi we're all agreed your sister was not there, that's good. No i wouldn't know when someone just threw the rock, but as it literally flew by i would turn round and look for the culprit, however half of these people don't even look to where the really loud bangs came from. Hmmmm also if that doesn't satisfy you. Polygraph tests don't work, the police don't use them. And have been proven to be wildly inaccurate.
@biologyprodigy In fact wha you would probably do is copy everyone else and just sit there, because a state of confusion had been introduced and you would not know what to do at all. - Remember what Derren was saying earlier....
Most of his work is based on psychological principles, even though he is a master trickster too !!
@computersolutions164 the audience isn't reacting due to the bystander effect. nobody is doing anything, so no one wants to be the first to make a move =)
@StitchBeatbox Makes a lot of sense actually, I have a friend with a bad knee who sometimes falls down in the street and you would be surprised how many people just walk past and ignore her, not even offering her a hand to get up - so point taken.
Am I the only one here freaking. out..All derren did was just give a fucking state ..and the guy just took out the gun and shot fry ..thats really really scary
@paulthecoolest Makes you think what went on in the 50's and 60's though - there has been talk that March Chapman, the guy who shot Lennon was programmed in a similar way because John Lennon was preaching peace when he moved to the U.S and the authorities did not like it. He actually openly said this in interviews..
Could he authorities have deemed him a big enough threat to do this ?
@paulthecoolest It is scary but look how m,any months Derren had been prepping for this stunt. He puts a lot of effort into his work and yet we still get people saying it is not possible, cannot be done etc, without offering an alternative explanation - even when they have just seen it proven.
Whilst Derren certainly can do magic, I would call this "something else" entirely, fantastic and very entertaining. Notice he indicates that only about 1% of people are capable of pulling this off though.
@computersolutions164 I know right..So many of these ppl wont even believe even after witnessing it first hand
Obviously the guy wasnt a stooge. and he cudnt have done it intentionally...the only logical conclusion wud be the hypnosis..i think this societal image surrounding hypnosis makes it so infamous..who knows if it weren't there..we wud hav completely negated psychiatry
@paulthecoolest Remember also that although hypnosis has a long history, the Nazis were experimenting with it in the 40's and 50's - A lot of Hitlers high command fled to the U.S after the war and the U.S was happy to let them in since a) they helped fund the Nazi war machine and b) the U.S knew they had experts with knowledge Werner von Braun (rockets) being one example.
Is it also possible that some of this knowledge made its way into MK-ULTRA courtesy of the Nazi Dr Mengelee ?
@computersolutions164 I would just like to mention that Derren has been known to be "honest about his dishonesty" when it comes to explanations for his spectacles. For one, he enlisted the help of a polygrapher, which have been shown to be inaccurate. I'm not claiming to know whether he's lying or not, I'm just saying when it comes to Derren's show, we have to take everything with a pinch of salt. It's still entertainment, nonetheless.
@lIlLLinIlI Of course, his stage shows are even funnier and some of his explanations about how he came by a certain trick are entirely ficticious but utterly believable - I was fooled once, I got home and tried to look up his explanation and could not find a thing on it.
I think this might fall into a slightly different category though, sort of a cross between psychology and illusion. I did not see any "magic" in this, unless it was hidden very well of course.
@lIlLLinIlI Derren does like to keep you guessing doesn't he ? His brand of magic / illusion etc seems a lot more intelligent than some of the others. He leaves you with more questions than answers.
@computersolutions164 Plus he notes in one of his dvd commentaries that ,as well as what you see on the show ,there are always lots of little things he does to tweek circumstances that don't make it in.
@Nerpha Of course, it's a balance between making compelling viewing and proving or disproving a point.
he does say that not everyone would be as suggestible as to be able to do this, but he also says that the chap selected would be in the 1% who probably would carry off the stunt.
I read somewhere about Mark Chapman, John Lennon's killer, who apparently dropped to the floor just like a professional marksman before shooting and displaying eerily similar properties to this.
I thought Derren almost jumped the shark when he did his 'picking the lotto numbers' explanation. But he is in top form here. I'm so happy he keeps showing us this 'mind controlling' side of him and doesn't go off the rails and locks himself in a box for 40 days like Blaine.
The contents of this program should be played for the parole board the next time Sirhan Sirhan's case is reviewed. This firmly establishes that what he's been telling them is perfectly within the realm of possibility, and isn't necessarily some attempt to disassociate himself from his actions.

@StitchBeatbox
Yes that may very well be true.
But I hate to say at the end of the day we are watching derren brown.
but the bystander effect is very real.
Just ask the tombstone the lady in brooklyn that got stabbed to death in the center of her complex.

I just shot Moammar Gadhafi...Derren made me do it.

@biologyprodigy No it wasn't you it was me - LOL - I distinctly remember Derren's polka dot handkerchief !!

Am I the only one here freaking. out..All derren did was just give a fucking state ..and the guy just took out the gun and shot fry ..thats really really scary
paulthecoolest 4 months ago
@paulthecoolest Makes you think what went on in the 50's and 60's though - there has been talk that March Chapman, the guy who shot Lennon was programmed in a similar way because John Lennon was preaching peace when he moved to the U.S and the authorities did not like it. He actually openly said this in interviews..
Could he authorities have deemed him a big enough threat to do this ?
computersolutions164 4 months ago
@paulthecoolest It is scary but look how m,any months Derren had been prepping for this stunt. He puts a lot of effort into his work and yet we still get people saying it is not possible, cannot be done etc, without offering an alternative explanation - even when they have just seen it proven.
Whilst Derren certainly can do magic, I would call this "something else" entirely, fantastic and very entertaining. Notice he indicates that only about 1% of people are capable of pulling this off though.

@computersolutions164 I know right..So many of these ppl wont even believe even after witnessing it first hand
Obviously the guy wasnt a stooge. and he cudnt have done it intentionally...the only logical conclusion wud be the hypnosis..i think this societal image surrounding hypnosis makes it so infamous..who knows if it weren't there..we wud hav completely negated psychiatry
paulthecoolest 4 months ago

It's still entertainment, nonetheless.
lIlLLinIlI 4 months ago
@lIlLLinIlI Of course, his stage shows are even funnier and some of his explanations about how he came by a certain trick are entirely ficticious but utterly believable - I was fooled once, I got home and tried to look up his explanation and could not find a thing on it.
I think this might fall into a slightly different category though, sort of a cross between psychology and illusion. I did not see any "magic" in this, unless it was hidden very well of course.
computersolutions164 4 months ago
@lIlLLinIlI Derren does like to keep you guessing doesn't he ? His brand of magic / illusion etc seems a lot more intelligent than some of the others. He leaves you with more questions than answers.
computersolutions164 4 months ago
@computersolutions164 Plus he notes in one of his dvd commentaries that ,as well as what you see on the show ,there are always lots of little things he does to tweek circumstances that don't make it in.
Nerpha 4 months ago
