In 1974 I was going thru the record selection at E.J. Korvettes and came across the "Hero and Heroine" album. I bought it and have been hooked on them ever since!
I found this song on a copied tape and I liked it so much I kept listening until I had learned to sing it. This must stand with 'epitaph' by King Crimson as a timeless vision of despair. Why are these great songs never played on the radio and why is it so hard to get the sheet music !? I wish they had a prog week on X factor!
No comments since a year ? Great performances of the Strawbs (this and Autumn)! Totally agree with your statements below, zebra. Nice atmosphere in the hall and good quality for an amateur. Keep on rockin' ...
What do you expect from an excited audience at a live gig? We can't all sing in key, and none of us go to a gig just to stand and listen. It's not the opera. If you want perfection, listen to the studio. This was a real show, with real people, all of them enjoying themselves. And only one man can sing as well as Dave, and that is Dave himself. Thankfully you can still hear him!
I confess I haven't seen them do this live for probably 35 years, I didn't have a video camera then, however, I recorded the song to my reel to reel last night from the 1971 album and got goose bumps all over again.
I would counter that I have seldom seen or heard Dave singing this with more vigour, passion and enthusiasm. Maybe my camera doesn't do it justice. But by Christ he didn't half belt it out! And the audience gave as good as they got, too.

I used to play this on my guitar but forgot the chords. Would love to hear a good female voice sing this song! Keep Rockin!!!

Haven't seen this since I bought the Album 'Grave (Brave?) New World' about 30 years ago. I've still got it.
Great to see Cousins still at it.

One of my favorite songs. Wish the quality was better though, and I could do without the audience members singing off key loudly.

Epic stuff. The album cover was so deep and meaningful.

Certainly, any version of GNW will give you goose bumps. I think the original studio version is probably still my favourite. A cracker!

Not a very good rendition of one of my favorite songs of all time by any artist. Undoubtedly Strawbs' best.
