At 2:23, I don't think that's Scott laughing. That's Manny Coon. It was intentional. Notice how he snaps right out of it. Brilliant writing and performance. And the really funny thing? It IS great advice. Paint. Paint whatever you want. Just paint.
It's actually fantastic, genuine advice about art. Just paint, or write, or sing a tune or whatever the hell it is you do and do it every day, as much as possible. Even if it's about tits.
ahh, I was just trying to make sure Dethklok didn't mean anything by it. You should look up "kith-darn near puked" on Youtube and you'll see it. If you want to of course.
Scott Thompson is absolutely brilliant in this monologue. I don't know if he was channeling someone else or it just came from within-whatever it was, it worked! I wish Manny was a recurring character on the show.
I think this Manny Coon character was actually a big part of Scott unleashed. The part of him who feels compelled to shit on everything conventional and 'normal.'
What does he say when he has the realization about his art? "I had a *creed a cour?" I can only assume it's French but I'd still like to know... Thanks for any help you can give.
Peaches don't actually exist. It's just a false fruit made up by the band The Presidents of the United States of America to sell their albulms. Also, German Sheppards don't exist either. Their just wolves with a beauty mark on their face.
Scott Thompson is special about 19 different ways. One of them being that he's such an awesome actor. I wish we had seen more of Manny. Hey, check out the "kids in the hall - hitman" video.

Whoa, fine! I guess I just have been seeing the bigger picture lately because I've been taking a class in feminism which I wouldn't really call slop actually. The word didn't feel out of context for me at all. I didn't mean to offend you- I felt offended by the skit.
Sorry, I think I overreacted a bit. I guess the point I was trying to make is that this whole monologue is a parody of a character who was raised in a hellish environment and hates himself and everyone else. He's not just a misogynist, he's a misanthrope! That's what makes it hilarious. He's a complete asshole, not a role model. :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
mmm, thank goodness for the dictionary... misanthrope yes, with the ever-present bedrock of gender oppression underlying it all. I don't fault KITH, or anyone, for being part of their supraculture- I'm only beginning to see the outlines of it myself. It's just one of those things that's so pervasive it's barely visible. If that makes any sense. Cheers.
My problem with modern feminism is that it teaches that the "underlying" problem with people or society has to do with gender. It's a rather narrow-minded and silly view, in my opinion.
I mean, look at this skit. The guy hates himself, hates everyone else, and has been asked to speak before a graduating art class despite the fact that he's an anti-role model. That's why it's funny. You can't create comedy with characters that are admirable. It's not sexist. It's humor.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Okay okay I watched it again. I think Scott Thompson is a really talented actor and I think his "talk" actually revealed something really profound, or was about to, about Manny Coon. I just felt the writers were using the disconnected female genitalia as something disconnected from the feeling and passion of the guy's upbringing. Like after his [genuinely] moving story, I have the feeling the writers said,
"what can we have him say now that will be the total opposite of humanness and connection? Women's body parts of course." Because if you can talk about women's parts as separate from the woman, you're de-personalizing her, right? That's what makes the audience laugh- that his human passion was so far removed from his unhuman portraits. I don't know- this is just a theory I'm working through. It's Radical Feminism if you're looking for a name for it. It's my favorite feminism. :)
The humor of the skit (I think) comes from the clash of the character with his audience. With everything he says he shocks and horrifies (1) the faculty behind him, (2) the students, AND (3) the real-world people watching the skit, because in their minds people aren't supposed to be the way he is. Think about your reaction to him saying "tits," and how similar it is to that of the faculty behind him. If you're offended/shocked, YOU are one of the straightpersons in the skit.
I don't think it's meant to malign female anatomy. KITH actually has quite a positive attitude towards women (the "I have a positive attitude towards menstruation" sketch and their three dimensional female characters)
The joke is that, when it comes down to it, tits are what sells. You cannot get around the biological wiring behind the impulse.
If anything they are maligning the pretensions of high art.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes I see your point of view- that's fine. I really still agree with my point of view too, that women are treated as less than human- by industry, by the medical community, by the entertainment industry, law, politics, war courts, etc. KITH "respects" women in a cutesy patriarchical way. I'm sure that's all they knew at that age, in that time. Feminism doesn't sell well with audiences, even at the CBC. I still get a lot of entertainment value out of most KITH sketches, just not this one.
I don't know if I would use the term "less than human", and I definitely wouldn't limit it to women.
The media denigrates human beings, universally. I'm as offended by the derogatory representations of men in the media, as I am by the depictions of women.
It is a reflection of our own cultural self-destruction.
I think it's two things: It's a satire on keynote speakers at graduation, who honestly do not give a shit what you do, and a decent amount of them are pretentious blowhards. Also, it's satirizing that "torutured artist", the guy whose suffering you cannot fathom, but gripes and bitches about it ad nauseam. If you want to detract anti-woman sentiments from this, be my guest. I just do not see it, just funny satire. And he talks about his balls, which is de-personalizing the man, right?
I understand what you're trying to say, but it in no way applies to Kids in the hall. Kids in the hall made a point of tackling issues like homophobia and gender issues all the time. It was one of the biggest parts of the show.
@eagillum Ah yes, radical feminism, the kind that sent Sandy Stone death threats.
The kind that bans trans women that have been raped from volunteering at rape shelter.
The kind that cheers on a level of policing of women's bodies that, were it applied to the rights of cis women to get the same medications, would drive one to the brink of, if not the point of, violence.
The one that erases trans lesbians as fetishists and universally high-femme. Yeah, that's an inclusive ideology there.
@eagillum Have they taught you to hate your fellow women for being male assigned at birth yet?
Or have they glossed over the fatalities gap in the workplace, or the commute gap? Have they relied on standards of anecdotal evidence that would make Ronald Reagan look like a posessor of statistical certaintly?
I am almost positive it is Dave. You can see it in the eyes, and bone structure of the face is a little too masculine for it to be an actual woman. they always do so well, though, when they portray female characters. all 5 of them. they have amazing talent
dammit, now I'm doubting myself...maybe it is a chick...but if it is Dave as a chick, I don't think he would have necessarily had a part. kith seems to do whatever they feel like. but I don't know.
I love this monologue! Great art can only come through great suffering. The worse the suffering, the better the art. lol.
