There was never a rivalry between the two. They were in fact friends. Ronnie Van Zandt (Skynyrd's singer and lyricist) was known to wear a tshirt with the front cover of Young's album Tonight's The Night on it. Young even wrote the song "Powderfinger" and posted an acoustic version of it to Van Zandt on tape for him to use on Lynyrd Skynyrd's new album. However the band ended with the infamous plane crash before this could happen and Powderfinger ended up on Young's album "Rust Never Sleeps."
