When Atatürk was 12 years old, he went to the military schools of Selânik and Manastır (present-day Bitola, Republic of Macedonia), both of them were under the Ottoman administration.
Kemal Ataturk enrolled into the Ottoman Army Academy at Manastır in 1895.
Ataturk were a practizing muslim, but we would not get religion into policy. He wouldn't have a fundamentalistc state

Sorry but wasn't England that saved each time Ottoman Empire from total annihilation by Russia? You should be more thaknful of your foreign saviours. Even your Kemal was a foreigner and not a Turk (he hated Turks cos they were muslims thus he went on to preach the "go to Europe by going back to Mongolia")... in the end the Turks lost the Middle East oil and remained the 'poor cousins' of the Saudis.

Zübeyde Hanım (mother) was born in Salonika, then part of the Ottoman Empire.
She was born as the only daughter of the Hacısofular family. Hacı, in Turkish, refers to those Muslims who have made the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Ali Riza (father)was a practizing muslim. Although he is thought by some to be of Albanian origin, most of historians claim that he was of Turkish descent.
