At this point the poor woman's very likely deader than dead, the previous head-swallowing seems to symbolise that the demon devoured her soul. Japanese myth has very little in the way of what we'd consider hard rules when it comes to supernatural beings- demons can be good, gods can be evil, and being good and kind your entire life is no guarantee your soul's safe from torment or destruction.
