I believe that Carrel and Gervais realise that we think there is spite between them because of Carell leaving the Office and Gervais' admittion that if it weren't for him, Carell would be a nobody. Gervais created the charater and before the US version was created (by Ricky Gervais), it had already proven to be successful in ninety other countries and has been copied in many other countries too.

That's why Gervais gets so much of the royalties, because it's his creation.

Gervais did make Steve Carrell what he is, he cast him in the series personally.
