@MJFslovak If it was the scope that hit his nose then a lower powered scope would be better. High powered scopes have a shorter eye relief making it dangerous to shoot larger caliber cartridges like the .308. A 3-9x would be more safe since the eye relief is about 3.25" or something.

I've used a .243 to kill deer, but I wouldnt recommend it if you're looking for anything bigger. Small round, high velocity means that the impact can be good but the light weight of the bullet will make it much less effective as it gains distance. That said, if you want a 100% sure kill on a deer from 100 yards + you might want to even skip a .30-30 and go 30-06 or at least .308
