After sitting a long time the valves that were held open often don't close completely. One or two will be closed during the time the car was sitting. That's probably why the engine cranked like it was going through a compression test. After the engine starts the valves start to seat again, and I think that's why the engine smoothed out.

car had done 180k miles and the head gaskit blew on it soon after replacing the heat plugs (which was what was wrong with it)
