Thanks for the video, made the installation much easier. The instructions that came with this item were not very helpful, but the video walk-through made things much easier. Just a suggestion, the music is a little annoying. Possibly replace it with a voice over of you explaining the individual steps or just maybe a few things you did that made steps easier... like say installing the anti-rotational shim.
great video! I have an m&p15 as well what kind of AR wrench did you use to remove your castle nut? I know there are many options out there but reading some of the reviews on brownells and midway are making me skeptical of which one to buy
@PATentPending310 I actually used an el cheapo wrench I bought from a gunshow. I think I paid $4 for it. Works just fine on any unstaked castlenut. If you have a staked one, you may need a heavier duty wrench.
This is the best vid i've found on this installation, and since I am new to AR mods I definitely needed help! Thanks a milli for putting this out, keep up the good work!!
This video is very well put together and exceeds the Magpul installation manual in its graphic detail and simple instructual text. Great job. Thanks for taking the time. This beats the tiny pics in the Magpul manual.
@usmcteel Really do appreciate the time you took to watch and comment. I made this video because I could not find a set of good directions to help me put this together so I thought I'd do it myself and maybe show others how to do the same.
This video is playing a joke on you. This is a procedure that cannot be done. This device cannot be installed on an AR-15 rifle. It is impossible. I will give $50,000 to the person who can properly install this device before my eyes according to this video or the manual.
@morganbsafpanda Thanks! Appreciate your time to watch and comment. These videos are intended to aid those who wish to do it themselves. After the first few times, it becomes easy. Good luck with yours.
@michael13dummy its difficult to say since some manufacturers do it differently. Sometimes its best to drill out the stakes with a bit that is slightly oversized just to break it loose.
I appreciate the video, I was nervous about tackling this myself. Bought a castle nut wrench, watched your video, and put the Magpul ASAP on myself. This kind of thing is invaluable, thanks!
You can do this BAM. If I can do it anybody can. Just make sure you do it on a light colored surface w/o a lot of stuff around as it's easy to drop the little parts involved. One other thing that was frustrating for me was using a standard AR-15 wrench tool to take the tube off & tighten it up with. You'd probably do better with a pipe wrench or something else. MDJJ
Using the video I installed the Magpul sling mount. That said, it isn't the easiest task I've performed. It took several takes/retakes to get it done. The take-down pin detent & spring popped out several times, as well as the rearward lower receiver spring & pin, and I dropped the little key half-a-dozen times too. It seems to me like the orig. end plate could be left on (eliminating the need for the little locking key) as the Magpul plate & the orig. plate fit together like hand in glove.
So does the Magpul sling mounting plate take the place of the spacer that was on the gun originally? Unless I overlooked it it doesn't appear as if you put the spacer back on once the Magpul had been installed.
Very clear photos, complete explanations. Warnings and fixes on the tricky bits (plate shim and take-down-pin-detente-spring were excellent. Torque pounds or approximate pressure needed on castle nut may have made it a perfect instruction video. HuAh!
@traitor30041975 Hi, I really dont know the song since youtube removed the original audio from this video. I used something called music swap so that youtube would not remove my video.
Let me ask, what do the detent spring do? And the shim is just to keep it from moving, now let me ask what hold the shim in place not to pop back out? where did u get your Ar wrench from?
@Dre6k There is a pointed cap at the end of the detent spring that puts pressure on your safety lever. The shim, once installed is held in place by the castle nut once you tighten down the nut. I got the AR wrench from a gunshow.
i had this installed on my RRA and the bottom section does not fit flush with the lower, did my gunsmith misalign something or does yours not sit flush either?
@TH3SH4 Actually just looked at mine and seems to me that mine is fairly flush. Check to make sure he installed the alignment / anti-rotational pin. Mine has never fallen out, but if installed wrong I can see it coming out during lots of firing.
I bought that Magpul ASAP. Looks easy to install but the staking is what worries me. And re-staking. I have no idea how to do that. And I don't think I'am gonna try because I'am sure I will mess it up. Looks like i'am stuck with the ASAP. Thinking of buying one of the clamp on attachments instead. Wish I knew of this before I bought the ASAP.
@JimmyBADCAT Your castle nut may be staked. Check to see if you can spot a pin along the rim of the castle nut. I had quite a hard time at first to remove the castle nut on some of my ARs, but it really takes one good impact to loosen it up as long as its not staked.
I've got a Colt and mine was staked in 3 places. I just gave it a little extra torque and it broke free pretty easily. I've read on some thread that some staking takes a little drilling or a little Dremel work to break free the staking. I don't have any experience with that, though. Just make sure you have an action block that you can put in a vice to hold the lower, and then give it a little extra torque. If that doesn't work, maybe drill or Dremel. Good luck.
Thank you, thank you, thank you...i was gonna wait until my armorer friend could install my ASAP plate for me but after watching your video i decided to try it my self. you make it easy as pie. thank you brother and i will most definitely subscribe!
@evcoval Thanks for the comment. I'm glad the video helped you out. Just take your time and it will be easier than you think. Be very careful of the little springs that will pop out. The first few times i did this, i ended up having to purchase a set of springs for mine. Take care and thanks for watching!
If it hasn't been mentioned you can tap the spring hole and simply thread it for a small grub screw. You the just cut the spring length down the same length as the grub screw. I did mine this way and never have to worry about bending the spring or having it fly out. There is a kit available for this as well. Otherwise a great video.
cant believe some of my friends paid $40 for this! I installed a TROY Industries muzzlebreak and the ASAP in less than 20 min. Thanks for the video...I never would have been brave enough if I didnt watch it!

Thank you thank you thank you. I am very new to the AR world and your video tutorial was perfect. I tried watching two other videos for the ASAP install and I was lost. Thanks a ton.
@snipergod0 The correct tools and a little patience goes along way with doing the work yourself, besides it saves you quite a bit of money on these simple mods. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Nice Vid, Thank you! I agree about the shim. But I installed it anyway.I wouldn't want my stock or sling mount to get lose. That could ruin a day out in the field. I suggest everyone install it just to be safe. It only takes seconds to install. Thanks again. After watching your vid I had no problems with the install!
Great work. Very clear. I wish I'd seen this video before installing it myself. LOL. On another note, I'm really not sure why Magpul chose to produce the anti-rotation shim as a separate part. It seems trivial to include it as a protrusion in the construction in the inner circle. Odd choice. I simply don't see the benefit of having to deal with that tiny little part.
As usual, I find this nice video AFTER putting in my new sling plate. And yes, both the buffer retention spring and thingy went flying through the house AND the take-down detent spring (twice)! And my M&P15 has a double staked plate but magically i was able to muscle it without breaking my lower, the grip, or anything else..and no serious marring/scratching a sharpie can't cover. Got my plate on with detent spring in place..lots of work, muscle, and stress... Otherwise, great video!
So I did it and a few dings here and there later it's done. I did not realiz what that little piece was for til I took a step back and noticed the groove in the buffer tube itself. Maybe a very important detail to notice for those who don't know it exists
Man, I'm about to take the challenge of doing one for myself soon. I really hope I don't destroy anything! Good vid and best believe I will be using it as a reference for sure!
Just make sure you have the wrench and hope your castle nut is not staked. Other than the staked castle nut, everything else is very simple. Also be careful of the springs.
Awesome video! It really helped... My problem with LWRC M6A3 was that the the castle nut had been staked... staked REALLY hard... it took me literally hours of pushing and pulling and hammering and some unconventional methods to unstake it.. but when I did, then this video walked me through it. Thanks again. Good job.
Really appreciate your compliments. I am glad this video helped you out. Your comments and response are the reason I keep making these vids. Thanks for watching.
not sure, I've had many ARs and absolutely none of the castle nuts have backed out even under heavy use. I've heard of staking the carrier key, but never the castle nut. maybe 1k2GO can explain more.
I've seen the castle nut back out and the buffer loosen on a crappy AR. Most quality lower makers will stake the castle (My LMT and LWRC are staked) All you have to do is get a punch set and stake the ASAP plate into one of the holes in the castle nut.
The castle nut typically has 4 small notches on the side facing the end plate. "Staking" is done by forcing some of the metal of the end plate into the notch in the castle nut. This can be done with a punch and a hammer, or some folks have good luck with a quality spring loaded punch.
Locktight is a not a good idea because next time you remove the castle nut, it will be essentially glued to the reciever evtension (buffer tube) and it will spin with the castle nut. The problem is that the end plate wont move and will gouge the threads of the reciever extension.
There were some very small details I couldnt capture in the video, so I thought it best to do this as a slide show. Trying to manipulate small items and keeping them in the cameras view and my view was a little difficult while filming in real time.
Every good American should at own at least one AR...you didnt know that?!?!?! hahaha..sorry man, but I just have so much crap for this gun that it is the only videos i can make lately.
Thanks for the video, made the installation much easier. The instructions that came with this item were not very helpful, but the video walk-through made things much easier. Just a suggestion, the music is a little annoying. @chanderson1 They most certainly do double stake. Bushmaster doesn't, and some others don't..but SW does...sadly.

Torque the castle nut to 40 lbs with a torque wrench (castle nut wrench has a slot for the torque wrench) and stake with a punch. Never use Loctite.

@1K2GO I keep hearing people say to "stake the castle nut" could you please explain why this is important and how to do it?
Tmac01baller 2 years ago
not sure, I've had many ARs and absolutely none of the castle nuts have backed out even under heavy use. I've heard of staking the carrier key, but never the castle nut. maybe 1k2GO can explain more.
chanderson1 2 years ago
I've seen the castle nut back out and the buffer loosen on a crappy AR. Most quality lower makers will stake the castle (My LMT and LWRC are staked) All you have to do is get a punch set and stake the ASAP plate into one of the holes in the castle nut.
dougdoug2006 2 years ago
The castle nut typically has 4 small notches on the side facing the end plate. "Staking" is done by forcing some of the metal of the end plate into the notch in the castle nut. This can be done with a punch and a hammer, or some folks have good luck with a quality spring loaded punch.
1K2GO 1 year ago
Locktight is a not a good idea because next time you remove the castle nut, it will be essentially glued to the reciever evtension (buffer tube) and it will spin with the castle nut. The problem is that the end plate wont move and will gouge the threads of the reciever extension.

Good vid bro....whats with the slide show though? LONG LIVE THE AR! Im working on building my third....
Goindeff 2 years ago
There were some very small details I couldnt capture in the video, so I thought it best to do this as a slide show. Trying to manipulate small items and keeping them in the cameras view and my view was a little difficult while filming in real time.

Good point haha

Great vid as usual, can you make a video of you holding the rifle with the sling attached. Like as if you were in a shooting stance?
fatboyR6 2 years ago
Sure, not a problem...will do it soon. Thanks for the comment!

I was thinking about getting one of these for my Bushmaster. Do you Like?
rivemor 2 years ago
Yes, it is a very nice addition. The only downside to it is that it makes a little bit of noise if your not shooting without your sling on.
chanderson1 2 years ago
yeah Ive heard that as well.
