His extended trot is just breathtaking, he's so light in his shoulder and all the weight sinks through his hocks, seriously looks like his floating. Also the passage and piaffe work is stunning, such high energetic action. I would love to ride him, he looks so calm afterwards
That was awesome. The horse is on the bit and not over flexed and you know what I love the most is that he isn't swishing his tail with every contact of the legs like alot of them do because they are unhappy or annoyed.

@HeartsonFire16 Having a rather small or big horse doesn't have such a big effect on how far you can come. Both have their (dis-) advantages. The reason why Totilas can walk like this is because like they say in the clip, he's very compact, there's a lot of muscles in a small amount of horse. :)
This is dressage, this is what it is supposed to look like - effortless and graceful. If you don't like it then you shouldn't watch it. This is the real dressage world.
Not to mention - have you listened to anything the commentators have said? Being former, or current professional riders they too would know. As they said, he is a more compact build, and he has the typical stallion neck - so all the excess muscle certainly would make it look as if he were hyperflexed. But his poll is just fine - and his jaw is relaxed, not locked.
I was so relieved when i saw this video. I was searching rollkur when i came across this video. I think the horse has well engaged hindquarters, but i do agree with what RRhapsodylover said.
@farrahag it's not that at all. I'm just angry that the horse got such a high score even though his hindlegs didn't track up evenly with his forlegs. It says specifically in the USDF rulebook that all four legs should be EVEN and that is defenitely not the case with this horse. He had an excellent test, but the still didn't deserve that high score.
@RRhapsodylover he is tracking quite evenly. In all four legs. His is just exuding cadence and rhythm and regularity. His impulsion and the height he achieves is outstanding. I don't know what your idea of perfection is - but the judges obviously thought he was pretty darn close.
@HeartsonFire16 If you think that he is tracking up evenly, then that's fine. I (and many other people watching this video) think that he isn't tracking up behind as much as he could. Not only that but his pole isn't the highest point, which is unexcusible. He definately is a fantastic horse, but, once again, he didn't deserve such a high score.
@RRhapsodylover Like I said, the judges knew what they were doing and they thought he was deserving of the score. So what if he wasn't tracking up "perfectly" in your mind, and so what if his pole is an inch or two lower than it "technically" should be. If it was a perfect performance, he would have gotten 100%. But it was certainly close enough.
@liennuh did you know that if someone is lucky, they MIGHT have the privelege of riding and owning a Grand Prix horse? Most people only have ONE Grand Prix horse in their lifetime (if they are lucky). Now, I am fifteen years old, so do you REALLY think that I would be blessed, lucky, fortunate (whatever you want to call it) enough to have and ride a Grand Prix horse at fifteen? I'll let you answer that one.
OK then - I guess your age speaks for itself. You are right - at 15 do you think you'd be lucky enough to ride a horse of this quality? So then, you should keep your comments to yourself as you have never had the pleasure of riding a horse of this caliber as I have. So keep you negative comments to yourself. It is extremely difficult to ride a horse like this and keep it all together. As liennuh says, if you think you can do better - go do it then.
@HeartsonFire16 I never said that I could do it better--because I know I can't. You can look at all the comments that I posted and see that I did not say ONE THING about doing this better than Edward Gal can.
@RRhapsodylover: I don't understand why people like you have to criticize these types of performances. Any rider, regardless of their discipline, should look at that and be awed. I know what it is like to sit on that type of performance - and when you feel that, any negative things you may have said about it are immediately gone. You are in no place to judge something that you have never experienced. It is one thing to watch it or to read about it, it is completely different to know it.
@HeartsonFire16 hey, this is a free country. Nobody said that I HAD to "ooo" and "ahh" over a horse that isn't REMOTELY even when trotting and who's pole isn't the highest point. It would be different if this was a regular rated show and he won, but this was a huge international competition.

You will find that the shine of the horse is mainly caused by good condition with the possibility of a little sweat!! Also to MusicWorldRap if you have nothing to comment that is relevant, then dont bother at all! Pathetic Remark!!!!! True Horsemanship at the highest level!!!!!
I think you will find that the shine of the horse is mainly caused by GOOD CONDITION rather than oil!!!!!! with the possibility of a little sweat! Also to MusicWorldRap, theres nothing Gay about true horsemanship, why make a comment like that about something which is obviously above your capabilities! Pathetic remark!!!!!
Exactly - there is not a moment where the horse is consistently behind the bit or hyper flexed. He's stunning! His ears are pricked and he looks nice and soft in his mouth. Not to mention the way he's coming through in his back and hind legs.
That's the point of hyperflexion, you don't use it in the show ring because they are supposed to mark you down for it. You can use it all you want in warm up though, and you can tell he uses it though because Totilas's poll is too low. And he is not coming through in his back or hind legs. His back is hollow and if you stop the video at any time in the performance you can see that his hind legs never step right under Edward, which is the sign that the horse is through his back.
@Hasuvel there is no way he could achieve these movements if he wasn't. It is impossible to perform at this level if the horse is not coming through behind - which he most certainly is. I don't know what video you have been watching - but it must be something different.
@Hasuvel the poll IS NOT too low - and his back is not hollow either. The horse's legs are not supposed to go directly beneath the rider anyway - that does not make for a balanced animal. I say it again - the judges are the professionals here and know what they are talking about - they would not have scored him this way if there was something wrong.
Rollkur is NOT illegal and it HAS NOT been banned by the FEI. When done properly there is NOTHING wrong with it. I received the majority of my dressage training from Nuno Olivera's prized master student and she uses it. Obviously you have never received the proper training with it or you would understand. And shame on you for arguing with a young horse enthusiast over something like this. Don't you have anything better to do?
Actually Rollkur/Hyperflexion has been banned by the FEI, being defined as "flexion of the horse's neck achieved through aggressive force.". LDR which "achieves flexion without undue force is acceptable." This may be considered pure semantics by some but I think it is interesting. They also said that "ANY form of aggressive riding must be sanctioned." which is good I think because most of us know horses can also be abused without the use of Rollkur.
You can absolutely have a valid opinion no matter what your age. Many think that my opinion is not valid since I have not been riding for 40 years. In the 14+ years I have been riding I have been trained by over 20 great trainers, as well as ridden in multiple clinics. I have trained with some of the great dressage and jumping trainers of our time. It is not a matter of age, but a matter of how much you have done in the time you have devoted to the sport.
in a dutch magazine called De Hoefslag stays an artikel about rollkur and LRD and how the FEI thinks about. And yes Rollkur and LDR is something difirent.
and everybody thinks that the dutch riders use rollkur and things like that. but also isabell Werth and other riders use it, not only the ducth riders.
If it woud be a german rider I would write the same. The nationality doesn't matter. Isabell Werth is the same shit. Anky van Grunsven, who is a dutch, too. It's everywhere the same, only the success is important, they don't care about their horse's healthiness. I don't like the big dressage turnaments. Sorry for my bad English :S
that is simply one of the most beautiful horses i have ever seen its so natural and effortless ive watched this so many times! i just get blown away each time!
a stallions poll is very rearly the highest point because of his crest this horse is amazing and any one who knocks this horse better know what they are talking about hes a freak we will never see a horse like this again and he is only a young horse you can just see that the horse is so happy and the rider just sits gentle and quite we should all enjoy an amazing horse gives me goose bumps
The entry music is Oxygene 13 by Jean Michel Jarre, from Oxygene 7-13 (1997) and the music at 1:45 is Equinoxe 4 from Jarre's second album, Equinoxe (1978)
i don't understand why some people watch this video then leave comments about edward and toto basically saying their shite. if you don't like the video then don't watch it as for thosse who think he trains the horses unfairly have you ever been to his yard and seen him train a horse? no you haven't so grow up and untill you get your facts right get over yourselves
Why dont you upload a video of you riding a test? so we can all pass judgement or better still lets see what we can ready from you test. Also the poll does moves in and out of the correct positions thats probably why he isnt scoring 10's for everything...but remember the test is just about the where the poll is position...thats not the whole test. Totilas hor can really sit!, move, has such rhythm, balance and 3 very very good gaits. Also Edward is a fanstastic producer of Grand Prix horses!
The poll is never the highest part of the neck in any part of the test! And yeah he's not being judged by where the poll is but the point I was trying to make is that the location of the poll tells observers how this horse is being trained. A horse that is through his back has the poll always at the highest point. Edward is a fantastic producer of MODERN Grand Prix horses. And I can tell that Totilas has very nice gaits, but I'm sure his natural ones are much better than these artificial ones.
@Hasuvel i would agree but totilas is not forced into that movement if you watch him warming up ect in rolkur but with a loose reign he moves like this on his own when he sits down. if he was forced no horse could be forced to move like that all the time. he would blow his top and look uncomfertable. he looks happy and he definately is not forced into this movement. that would be impossible.
Answer to question 1: We watched this (or at least I did) because of the hullabaloo that was being circulated about it. Now that we've watched it we feel we have just as much right as you guys to comment on it.
Answer to question 2: No, we have not been to his yard to watch him train. However you can usually tell how someone trains by how they ride their test. I can tell that Edward Gal uses too much hand because his horse is not through his back and his poll isn't at the highest point.
unfortunately the cameraman is NOT doing his job very well. who would show the horses head when it's doing flying changes?
but the horse... wow this extended trot.. the legs can't be higher;)

HeartsonFire16 1 year ago
@HeartsonFire16 I never said that I could do it better--because I know I can't. You can look at all the comments that I posted and see that I did not say ONE THING about doing this better than Edward Gal can.
RRhapsodylover 1 year ago
@RRhapsodylover: I don't understand why people like you have to criticize these types of performances. Any rider, regardless of their discipline, should look at that and be awed. I know what it is like to sit on that type of performance - and when you feel that, any negative things you may have said about it are immediately gone. You are in no place to judge something that you have never experienced. It is one thing to watch it or to read about it, it is completely different to know it.
HeartsonFire16 1 year ago 2
@HeartsonFire16 hey, this is a free country. Nobody said that I HAD to "ooo" and "ahh" over a horse that isn't REMOTELY even when trotting and who's pole isn't the highest point. It would be different if this was a regular rated show and he won, but this was a huge international competition.

You will find that the shine of the horse is mainly caused by good condition with the possibility of a little sweat!! Also to MusicWorldRap if you have nothing to comment that is relevant, then dont bother at all! Pathetic Remark!!!!! True Horsemanship at the highest level!!!!!

What we all wish we could look like on a horse
Foalwatcher53 1 year ago 2
Exactly - there is not a moment where the horse is consistently behind the bit or hyper flexed. He's stunning! His ears are pricked and he looks nice and soft in his mouth. Not to mention the way he's coming through in his back and hind legs.
HeartsonFire16 1 year ago
That's the point of hyperflexion, you don't use it in the show ring because they are supposed to mark you down for it. You can use it all you want in warm up though, and you can tell he uses it though because Totilas's poll is too low. And he is not coming through in his back or hind legs. His back is hollow and if you stop the video at any time in the performance you can see that his hind legs never step right under Edward, which is the sign that the horse is through his back.
Hasuvel 1 year ago
@Hasuvel are you kidding me?! if the horse weren't through the back he couldn't be able to perform at this level
aammiieegg 1 year ago
He totally could. And he is. Just because the horse's head looks like he's on the bit doesn't mean that he is through his back.
Hasuvel 1 year ago
@Hasuvel there is no way he could achieve these movements if he wasn't. It is impossible to perform at this level if the horse is not coming through behind - which he most certainly is. I don't know what video you have been watching - but it must be something different.
HeartsonFire16 1 year ago
@Hasuvel the poll IS NOT too low - and his back is not hollow either. The horse's legs are not supposed to go directly beneath the rider anyway - that does not make for a balanced animal. I say it again - the judges are the professionals here and know what they are talking about - they would not have scored him this way if there was something wrong.
HeartsonFire16 1 year ago
i bet edward will be top favorite for gold on dressage in 2012 london games. And hope he wins. For the record Edward does not use Rollkurr.
rex88moser 1 year ago
Rollkur is NOT illegal and it HAS NOT been banned by the FEI. When done properly there is NOTHING wrong with it. I received the majority of my dressage training from Nuno Olivera's prized master student and she uses it. Obviously you have never received the proper training with it or you would understand. And shame on you for arguing with a young horse enthusiast over something like this. Don't you have anything better to do?
HeartsonFire16 1 year ago
Actually Rollkur/Hyperflexion has been banned by the FEI, being defined as "flexion of the horse's neck achieved through aggressive force.". LDR which "achieves flexion without undue force is acceptable." This may be considered pure semantics by some but I think it is interesting. They also said that "ANY form of aggressive riding must be sanctioned." which is good I think because most of us know horses can also be abused without the use of Rollkur.
UltimateDQ 1 year ago 2
@HeartsonFire16 I'm wondering who your trainer is that was Olivera's student that uses rollkur. I'm interested in looking her up. Thanks!
ItsNotAboutTheHorses 1 year ago
You can absolutely have a valid opinion no matter what your age. Many think that my opinion is not valid since I have not been riding for 40 years. In the 14+ years I have been riding I have been trained by over 20 great trainers, as well as ridden in multiple clinics. I have trained with some of the great dressage and jumping trainers of our time. It is not a matter of age, but a matter of how much you have done in the time you have devoted to the sport.
HeartsonFire16 1 year ago
in a dutch magazine called De Hoefslag stays an artikel about rollkur and LRD and how the FEI thinks about. And yes Rollkur and LDR is something difirent.
and everybody thinks that the dutch riders use rollkur and things like that. but also isabell Werth and other riders use it, not only the ducth riders.

LJKingMT 1 year ago 2
Hanna1489 1 year ago 3
Hanna1489 1 year ago

Lambert98 1 year ago
schimocco 1 year ago
JuliaNinja 1 year ago
schimocco 1 year ago
JuliaNinja 1 year ago
schimocco 1 year ago
JuliaNinja 1 year ago

If it woud be a german rider I would write the same. The nationality doesn't matter. Isabell Werth is the same shit. Anky van Grunsven, who is a dutch, too. It's everywhere the same, only the success is important, they don't care about their horse's healthiness. I don't like the big dressage turnaments. Sorry for my bad English :S

DECORSTUD 1 year ago
The poll is never the highest part of the neck in any part of the test! And yeah he's not being judged by where the poll is but the point I was trying to make is that the location of the poll tells observers how this horse is being trained. A horse that is through his back has the poll always at the highest point. Edward is a fantastic producer of MODERN Grand Prix horses. And I can tell that Totilas has very nice gaits, but I'm sure his natural ones are much better than these artificial ones.
Hasuvel 1 year ago 4
@Hasuvel i would agree but totilas is not forced into that movement if you watch him warming up ect in rolkur but with a loose reign he moves like this on his own when he sits down. if he was forced no horse could be forced to move like that all the time. he would blow his top and look uncomfertable. he looks happy and he definately is not forced into this movement. that would be impossible.
BroganMcC 1 year ago 2
Answer to question 1: We watched this (or at least I did) because of the hullabaloo that was being circulated about it. Now that we've watched it we feel we have just as much right as you guys to comment on it.
Answer to question 2: No, we have not been to his yard to watch him train. However you can usually tell how someone trains by how they ride their test. I can tell that Edward Gal uses too much hand because his horse is not through his back and his poll isn't at the highest point.
