I have a 1982 GB4 and the intake manifold was only 7mm wide while it should be between 12 and 16mm. Secondary, the exhaust may be restricted too. It got only to 40 km/h and when I removed the restriction, it went 10km/h faster ; which looks like the std specs.
Next, the GB4/ 12V cylinder head as smaller intake valves than the older version , but that will be very expensive to replace.
The easiest is probably replacing the whole engine and gearbox with a jingcheng version.
