Thanks for sharing this lovely video and the warm and sensitive sopranovoice from Virginia Zeani makes you melting. What a fine rendition of this Barouque aria, by Händel.
i honestly cant listen to any of virginia zeani's songs without closing my eyes her voice is so beautiful i dont know if that makes sense to anyone here but if anyone else here is like me and closes their eyes when hearing something so terribly beautiful then you understand
Like Leontyne Price, this is another REAL singer singing Handel with a REAL voice. Such a welcome change from the voiceless, pale, bloodless 'correct' school of Handelian singing we sadly experience today. Brava Zeani!
Always had a weak spot for the most beautiful Zeani, but then again I love so many of the ones that were forgotten by the record companies. She encompassed a very large repertoire at a high standard!
As to the male roles, I personally prefer male singers singing male roles, so I am really happy that the bass Nicola Rossi-Lemeni and the tenor Franco Corelli sang the two men, Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony.
Mark Anthony is not a character in Handel's opera Giulio Cesare. The other male leads are Sesto, Tolomeo (Ptolemy) and Achilla. Corelli probably sang Sesto in this prod. Originally Sesto was a trouser role for a soprano/mezzo, Tolomeo (like Cesare) a castrato and Achilla is actually a nice baritone part!
Thank you very much, dear Charlotte, for this wonderful clip. I am so glad to hear that in this performance sang Corelli and Rossi-Lemeni. And this aria impressed me very much indeed, especially Virginia's performance. I wonder if you have any other extract from the performance with Corelli or Rossi-Lemeni with Virginia?
Thank you so much for posting this I had a chance of meeting her about 20 years ago and we talked about her Cleopatra and tonight thanks to you my dear CharlotteinWeimar I am recalling that wonderfull encounter, thank you my dear.
Very beautiful. I would like to say that this performance is not only perfect in style and technique, but emotional! this does not exist that much today: musicians are very correct, deeply concerned with "philological sound", but often boring, normally galcial. Does somebody agree?
I'm glad you have found Virginia Zeani here. But Zeani is a very great singer and a stunningly beautiful woman, not just a pretty girl. Now in her eighties she still looks and sounds amazing. See the other postings on my channel
I have to confess I have to listen to that all the time... its not the music, its the voice.... its a lesson of belcanto... of PURE voice without anything else... la voce umana....
Re: IlCaroSassone - This was very unusual repertoire for the 1950s, particularly for La Scala, and there are some conducting and editing problems [there is almost a full stop half way through, and no proper da capo ending]. But despite these shortcomings, like Senaforever, I find Zeani's own performance beautiful, very sensitive and quite haunting.
Here is what we so miss in baroque nowodays: A LINE, pastosita, legato, messa di voce, equality of tone production... This is so perfect and how every single note seems to carry that powerfull elegiac feeling.
Handel was such a wonderful composer. This aria sounds wonderful whether it is perfomred by full voiced sopranos or the more current lighter voices.

Zeani is the epitome of a lady, with impeccable taste, judgment, & personal style that govern her elegant phrasing & perfect interpretive skills.
Close your eyes, & let the warmth of her clear, refulgent voice engulf you; it doesn't get better than that!
Unerring interpretation, exquisite voice, & absolutely gorgeous...the ultimate package!
Cleopatra, herself, would have been envious, & justifiably so!
Brava, lovely lady! Brava, Diva! Brava, Zeani!

As good an example of "old school" Handel as one can find. As a certified Handelian, I'm more than impressed with Ms. Zeani's beautiful singing.
