I had a think about this, and to make a travelling wave you could do it by rotating each of the grey/red connectors by 90 degrees compared to the previous one, so it makes a long spiral. Is this still built, is it possible to give that a try? I'm not 100% it'll work, but I think it stands a pretty good chance.
@atmhso Thanks for the suggestion , which I tried in one section but it just seems to reduce the amplitude and increase the frequency (unless I'm missing something). Also the 90 deg twist requires a set of four to get the mounting axle back in alignment, whereas it's a set of five (or seven) for the up/down effect, so do do it properly I think it would need a much longer set of twists between each mounting post - I doubt the parts would stand up to that!
I wish we've could've seen the ball-return part...

I would have made the waves travel from the beginning to the end instead of just up and down. But good job anyway.

@quilquin That depends on whether they are standing or travelling waves. Light waves are stationary, sound waves are longitudinal. The more you know!
