IMHO and I agree, these were R.E.M.'s greatest years. Mr. Stipe still had hair, wore his cool desert boonie hats and dressed in a way like the average Joe citizen did at that time. Quite likely, their music performance at Unplugged was quite likely the very best they ever did. In fact, it's a milestone and particularly stands out among all the MTV Unplugged concerts. I really loved them and particularly Mr. Stipe during those days of my early adulthood.
Upon returning from the First Gulf War I bought this album. I must have listened to this song a thousand times. I stopped listening to it for some haunting reason. I am just know able to listen to it again. What a beautiful melody. It words and tones bring joy and sadness to me. Thanks for sharing this with all of us.
I wish REM would release the entire unplugged concert from 91 on CD.
I remember a friend of mine somehow recorded the performance off TV at the time onto a cassette, and I played that thing to death. Wish I knew where it was now, ha!
Thanks so much for uploading the REM MTV Unplugged videos...priceless!~
singing every word to this album, every note to the note, everyday after high school...always wondered what this seemingly dark song was about. Does she throw her child out the window at the end? REM opened my mind to the possibilities of music, politics, and of course sexuality. Pretty power stuff to give to a 12 year old kid.
What a beautiful song. we all start off so innocent and free. Only to be ruled controlled by the masses with liberal monkeys grabbing control and beating us over the head with our own morality. God save the children in us all while monkeys destroy the planet.

A veces me imagino que esta canción relata justo el momento en el que todo el sistema cae y la gente sale libre a la calle.. se acabó la mentira, el abuso..
entonces, cuando llega el coro, me pongo a saltar como nunca y casi, casi puedo verlo.. the end is near and the future...certain..
@punschpralinen - in what sense was REM underrated? The universal accolate? The largest recording contract of its time? The millions of CD's sold? The dozens of awards? There is not one measure of the word "undrerrated" that you could apply to this band that would make any sense, in any context, ever. Just because your friends don't like them, doesn't mean they're underrated.
Micheal Stipe's favourite word of all time: 'Barricades.'

Actually, it was pugtheone that said that. And i don't understand it either how you can call them underrated.
neonhandshake99 2 years ago
Most people use the words 'underrated' and 'overrated' without ever thinking -- or knowing -- what they literally mean.
mcduffiesteven 2 years ago
I bet in a songwriting contest out of berry buck mills and stipe.... Mills is the man..... If REM breaks, expect a great record from him ;D
