I wanna be a nuclear engineer designing and building new and more efficient power sources for military bases and subs. I am planning on going to MIT, Brown, Princeton, Wisconsin Madison, RPI, West Point, or Annapolis. But I don't meet the physical standards for the nrotc (short arms and legs, small tendons [lack of flexibility], ancestral heart problems, etc.) is there any way I can achieve that goal without nrotc?
hi i'm a high school junior with good grades and stuff and could probably get into cornell.
however, i've never done a varsity sport in school. I play tennis and am very athletic. I also work out (like lift weights twice a week and run and push ups, ect...) I just did not place athletics as a very high priority.
Do you think i could get into nrotc at cornell (not as marine option?)
Is there really a lack of "moto" Sailors that a USMC Gunny has to conduct pt? Not that there's a problem with that, Marines are awesome conditioned machines, but it sends a negative message about the fittness level of Sailors.
@leiro76 It's more of a tradition that navy officers are trained by gunny's. I don't know why, but the same applies to Officer school in rhode island, not just NROTC. I would imagine that the Naval Academy also has gunny's running the place. And yeah, I've met a LOT of fat sailers, so they probably wouldn't be very good at PT anyway.
@leiro76 It's not due to a lack of anything necessarily. But NROTC doesn't only train Navy officers, but Marine Officers as well, thus it's necessary for EVERYONE to be in as proper shape as possible. If that means being in Marine Corps shape, then so be it. But when training becomes more advanced, Navy wanabes tends to go one way and Marines/ Navy SEAL wanabes go another way.
Alright, I'm a highschool junior soon to be senior, captain of the swim team, soon to be band drum major, 28 on the act, with a 3.7 gpa. I'm lookin to do the marine option and maybe go to flight school, what do I need to do?
good luck middies...that was 10 years ago almost to the day that I checked in at GW. We got our orientation at Quantico Marine Corps Base though.......a little rougher
If your talking about freshman O, Not too bad. Its more the mental aspect rather than physical strain. If you are an MO, just make sure you can get at least 15 pullups, 80 situps in 2 min, and like a 21 min run. You wont get a top score W/ that but at least you wont be weak in anything.
Both ROTC and NROTC are hard to get into. What i did to be a Marine Option at MU is: 20 pullups 100 situps(2 min) 19:50 3 mile run. 22 on ACT, CUM GPA of 3.3, Joined the DEP, had a good interview, and you have to get accepted into either UW Madison, Or Marquette. It is a little easier to get a regular ROTC scholarship because most colleges have the program whereas NROTC only has 2 that you can go to. Also beef up your application w/ community service, student council, sports, clubs, jobs, etc.
Okay, you wanna be a cross-towner. gotcha. Well Im not an expert on that, but ive got some good friends that do that. First thing you need to know is that generally speaking, the only people who go to UWM are MIDN who dont have a scholarship but hope to pick one up. They are called "College Programers" They have a rougher time all-around because UWM doesnt have a NROTC unit, They Have to go to Marquette for everything. If you get a scholarship, go to Marquette. I started applying in late Aug.
Okay wait so you can go to rotc and not have a scholarship you have to pay for it wtf i think i am just going to join the reserves then. How our my standing i can do all your physicalls no problem but i am a 3.1 with a 24 on act and in football what is a MIDN
Okay First off, youve got to dress it up!Even on youtube. I didnt understand everything you wrote but yes, if you dont have a scholarship you go to UWM and pay tuition like normal. If you are gonna join anyways, make sure you are in the DEP before you apply for the scholarship. Your standing is not great, but acceptable. If you are still in high school, you really need more nerdy activities. AKA student council etc. If you are a senior you really need to get going on that appication.
You don't need to be in DEP to get the scholarship, although it certainly helps because it shows them that you have already dedicated yourself to service. But joining DEP knowing that you plan on leaving it isn't necessarily the right way to go. Plus, what do you do if you don't get the scholarship? Tell your recruiter you quit? Now he/she thinks your a wimp. Just apply, be fit to the Marine Corps standards, even if you're going Navy, and learn how to freaking spell.
I really cannot say for sure. I'm pretty sure that DODMERB just sent me the paper work that explains it. As for the PFT, ask your recruiter to have you run it and send your score in. That is what I did anyway.
it's 6 long days of difficult training, meant to build teamwork and very quickly cultivate you into a military person. It's a great way to take a normal everyday person, and teach them the military way in just a week. It's hard for many people, but is very enjoyable by the time you're finished because things are much more lax after that. What exactly happens? Well that's for you to find out!
None of these incoming freshmen were marine options, though some of them probably turned marine later on in the program. The khaki uniform is more of a navy uniform, but both marines and navy can use it in NROTC.
Yep - I knew some students like that. We called them "college program" students. Not sure if that's official. They got the stipend, but not the scholarship. I believe they could stay in the NROTC as college program students until their junior year. If they didn't have the scholarship by then, they were out.
Of course! They actually encourage that since there are only so many scholarships and some great future officers are always left out. Just apply for Naval Science as you would any other class and BOOM: You're in.
While there, I had never heard of anyone being prior service.
Many enlisted service members do become officers, but it would be rare for them to achieve that through ROTC or the academy. They usually attain their college degree while in the service, and then request for commissioning and become a "mustang officer".
A large majority of long-term officers, especially in the Navy, are "mustangs." There is something special about having prior-enlisted experience that drives them to the top.
I'm not sure that I understand your question, but if money is the only reason you'll be in the military, maybe you should try something else. Cornell University does not give any academic scholarships, only sports ones or need-based ones. You'll be in luck if your parents are poor - then it's a free ride! Although in these hard economic times, you're more likely to get loans than grants...
Hey, i'm thinking of doing NROTC. Do you actually have to memorize a lot of things for orientation? because i saw that one girl saying something about the code of conduct. if you could let me know that'd be very helpful.
Well of being in the Navy, you will have to memorize many things such as the way you conduct yourself, wear your uniforms, and interact with others in the services, but the memorization during Orientation is more just for the team building and challenging week that they prepare for you, so yes you must memorize it that week, but most of the stuff is not very used after orientation, and everything will be less formal as well. We're not gung-ho all the time.
Wow you've heard "chinese whores giving birth"? Do send me the link to that video!
Let's see some of your pushups CJ after you've run hills for an hour and have just done 2 minutes straight of max pushups. Send me that link as well k thx man.
dude...wouldn't you believe it, I HAVE! smell was worse than the noise though. ha.
sorry, no video of freshman orientation. gysgt said it was "classified". we did do a prt, though, after three hours of close order drill in full camies and 85 degree weather. ah, memories.
This was Friday - the last day of Orientation week, and they were running up and down Libe Slope at Cornell. They do get a guaranteed 8 hours of sleep per night during the week. That used to not be the case....
As I remember, the female midshipmen did not have to cut their hair anytime during NROTC (otherwise we'd have no recruits!). They had to pull their hair back and out of the way when in uniform or for working out in formation.
is does the navy option do the same orientation as the marine option?

1. Can you graduate and become an Officer without receiving a scholarship?
- Nope, you gotta get the scholarship to become an officer. Otherwise you should graduate, then try out the officer school after college.
2. Do your chances of receiving a scholarship increase after a year or two on College Program?
-You'll get the scholarship if you stay active in the unit, get good grades, and pass the fitness tests.
