In the last decade, Keiths singles have spent more than a year at No. 1 on the charts, giving the singer-songwriter a No. 1 smash every year since his debut single Shouldve Been A Cowboy hit the top of the charts in 1993. He's been recognized by Forbes as being one of the top money earners of all genres. His songwriting peers honored him with a songwriter of the decade award. He's a patriot and a friend to people of varying opinions. He didn't have to bury Natalie. She did that to herself.
Okay you know what people? If you're going to ban someone for speaking their opinions, you have some serious problems. That's what Canada and America are here for. FREEDOM OF SPEECH. FREEDOM TO HAVE YOUR OWN OPINIONS. You're hypocritical if you come on here and diss them for speaking their minds because that's what you're doing yourselves.

So, I don't dislike the Dixie Chicks for having an opinion (even though they really didn't). I dislike them for making a pandering offhand comment on a subject millions were having to take seriously. While the DC's pandered to the anti-war crowd and got rich, millions were kissing friends and family goodbye for that war. Some, for the last time. 90% of Americans and ALL of congress was for the war when she spoke up. If she had meant it, it would have been different. Opinion?OK. Pander? Fail.
Aww...its a bush regime apologist. :) You, my friend, are in the midst of a serious moral crisis. You seem to have a problem with "pandering" And yet, you express no indignance over the pandering of corporate media to the Bush era criminals or other such "pandering" that led to the slaughter of millions of civilians in Iraq. Please don't play the "kissing family and friends goodbye" card. This isn't about grunts going off to pull triggers, its about Bush's bloody hands.

and for the record, Toby Keith has been successful competing against 100's of other solo male C&W singers. Forbes recognized him for being third in income among all artists in 2008. All. Every DC apologist goes to"It isn't about sales" at this point. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Dixie Chicks have NEVER said they support the troops. Toby Keith visits them every year, and armed forces personnel eat free at his restaurants. Nat says she doesnt' understand patriotism. Toby lives it.
Better yet, why don't you profile Toby Keith pandering to the Bush Administration. I see it's ok for someone you like to serve as a willing mouthpiece for a government promoting unfounded agression and militarism. What's the phrase I'm looking for here.....oh yeah, RAGING HYPOCRITE. Man, if Bob Dylan knew how people like TK were kissing the ass of the establishment, he would be rolling over in his grave.

riv: RIAA gave Garth the award. Is there another source with documented evidence? No. I don't bring up the Beatles or Garth except to point out that grammys are handed out for reasons other than artistic talent, and that is exactly why the DC's got any in 2006. The point: The DC's got a liberal pop from the grammy voters in 2006, nothing more.

Riv: No, you don't understand. Natalie didn't HAVE a political view in 2003. Shall I post the backstroke she made out of her notorious "comment"? She had a year to express an opinion during the runup to the war, including 3 national TV appearances and her TK bash. Only when she was in front of an anti-war crowd in London did she decide to pander. Here's her first stateside interview after the comment:
You're right, Patsy & Elvis started out prior to 59, but for Elvis what about the other 18 years he recorded? He only won 3 Grammys and they were for gospel. And most of Patsy's big hits (ie Crazy, I Fall To Pieces, Sweet Dreams, etc) were after 59. She won no competitive Grammys. I dont knock anyone who likes Garth, but I can't agree with anyone who calls him or the other 95% of the singers supposedly singing Country music now, Country.
sweet: Well, everyone gets to have their own opinion. I, for one, saw the advancement of C&W into more advanced rythms as a positive step for the genre. The RIAA had to face this dillemma over sales when awarding Garth his honor. The point I was making about the Grammys is that they may have, at one time, long ago, been valid recognition for artistic talent. Unfortunately, that remains only as long as the liberal arts majors who vote for them don't find some cause (Ie the DC's) Sad they do that.

Some Trivia:
Garth Brooks' career took off at the same time as the Dixie Chicks. In 2006, the Dixie Chicks drew 13,500 people to one concert in LA. In 2007, Garth Brooks sold 85,000 tickets in 59 minutes, doing five charity concerts in two days at the same place. He is the highest selling solo singer of all time and sits only behind the Beatles in total sales, with Elvis coming in third. And he is STILL selling albums. How many grammys does he have?
Garth Brooks career "took off" in the early late 80s/ early 90s where as the Chicks career didnt take of til '98 with the release of Wide Open Spaces. Not the same time if my math is right.
Riv4Life: That's because you believe the Dixie Chicks didn't exist before Natalie Maines. Totally untrue. They were being courted by Sony to be the flagship artists for their new label, Monument Records, BEFORE Natalie Maines arrived. The sisters were desparate when the two other band members CHOSE to leave. The lead singer at that time, Laura Lynch, saw the roadtrips interfering in raising her daughter, and she left. The Dixie Chicks formed in 1987. FUNM.
Did anyone ever ask Natalie Maines what she thought of TK's song? No. She just blurted it out, like it was important for everyone to know. It was for her goal. They immediately re-released Travelin' soldier and it went to #1 on the controversy. This was such a good idea, she used it again in London. What she didn't count on was that so many would see her disingenuous comment as belittling to many on a subject they were having to take seriously. While she pandered for profit, they were off to war
The Dixie Chicks were well known enough in C&W that they were selected to, now follow closely, open for some of the biggest names in C&W before Natalie showed up. Sony had already approached them to be the flagship act for their new label. They won the Telluride Bluegrass Competition five years before Nat. The were scheduled for a far east tour when Laura Lynch quit to raise her family. They were desparate when Nat showed up. You'll never guess who paid Natalie for her first show as a DC.
They had a running forum called Chick Chat before Nat. Their first paycheck with Nat singing came from the Texas Governor's inauguration, when according to their Chick Chat, they celebrated the election of the "whiter, brighter, George Bush". That's right. Nat's first dollar came from the state of Texas to celebrate GW becoming governor of Texas.
And Garth's fans ( I don't know how you got me confused with millions of others who would identify themselves as such) don't feel threatened at all. Or are you saying that Natalie's FUTK T-shirt was worn because she felt so threatened by Toby Keith? Garth sold more records than anyone other than the beatles. Why would his fans feel threatened by a group of disingenuous women who talked themselves out of a career? LOL.
There was a "fued", if you will, between TK and the Chicks. There was none between them and Garth, yet you've chose to cast a stone at them while you continue to refer back to Garth. Therefore I could only conclude some of his fan's felt threatened for you to go out of the way to slander their name. I honestly don't know if FUTK was in reference to Mr Keith, as the Chicks said it was not. In this discussion I'm not interested in the politics of the ordeal, only the music.
Not that it matters because record sales can only be taken with a grain of salt (imho), Garth has not "sold more records than anyone other than the Beatles". Far from it, actually. And you're not proving your case to me by continually bringing up the Beatles, either. I'm not the biggest supporter of the Mop Tops
The feud was started by Nat when she bashed TK's song. He was #1 and they were stalled for a week at #14. Immediately after her unrequested and unprovoked bash, they re-released Travelin' Soldier to capitalize on the controversy. It went to #1, but fell in a week after her comment in London. TK said if she wanted a feud, he would bury her. Well, he didn't have to. She just kept on talking and bashing, and killed her career. BTW, I didn't care for the Beatles, either, but many did.
TK thinks he's a bad***, he wants to be Jr. but doesn't have the talent or name to back him up. That's not the way I percieved it as having played out, but it's water under the bridge I suppose. "Killed their career" because they said something you didn't like? I guess the Hag killed his too, LOL Some people wouldn't know what real and good Country music was if it fell on their head. It's very sad
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It wasn't just me that didn't like what she said. Millions of people abandoned them. And as far as TK "thinking" he's bad, check out the video where some drunk through a beer up on stage. His place is about 30 miles from mine. He's one of the nicest guys you'll meet, and he usually will overlook the first slam at him. Don't do it twice, though. Jr. talked shit about being "rowdy" but never was. Toby isn't rowdy, but you don't want to get on his bad side. He is NOT a small man in any way.
And Madonna sold more tickets than Garth. Doesn't say much does it? It's not how many tickets you sell or how many special effects you have, it's the quality in the music. Most Grammys dont go out to people who deserve it. Hence Garth has 2yet how many do legends like Elvis, Patsy, or Hank have? Sometimes they actually get it right, so why begrudge that? How many times has a Country act gotten top honors at this kind of show? I know it's not been nearly enough. & Garth doesnt sing real Country
NO ONE other than Julio Iglesias has ever played to a larger crowd or sold more tickets to a specific concert than Garth Brooks. That includes Madonna. Julio is in the guinness book of world records more than any other solo artist of any genre at any time. Elvis, Patsy, and Hank were performing BEFORE the grammys existed (first awards in 1959). I agree that C&W has typically been the slackwater for Grammys and just one more reason why they have received criticism. Garth doesn't sing C&W? LOL.
Here's a clue for you regarding the grammys and their credibility as an "award" for performance and artistic ability; Three years after being inducted into theCountry Music Hall of Fame, after amassing 68XPlatinum sales, 63 of which occurred over 10 years ago, they finally decide that the man critics refer to as a living legend and the "King of Country", George Strait, finally deserved a single grammy for an album that went single platinum this year. The grammys are clueless.
Factual example of disingenuous behaviour by the grammys:
Joan Baez, who announces the DC's here, was given a lifetime achievement award as incentive to announce the DC's. She was nominated six times over the last half century for the folk grammy, and never won. She stands out only because she's not dead yet.
She now plays venues like the Arroyo Grande, Ca. "Clarke Center". Its calendar includes Dana Elementary School's Wizard of Oz play.
