Even in later solo work by Ralph, his voice is still at a high register, but nothing like this. Like many, I was curious about his voice when NE came about, too. Personally, I wouldn't say that Ronnie, Mike, Bobby or Mike sound like "old men", but actually like teens/young men.

There was less emphasis on singers' looks back in the 1980s because music videos were still sort of new. Ralph and Ronnie (along with Johnny Gill, who later joined the group) were definitely handsome when they reached their 20s. Bobby Brown has never been cute, but he had that "ugly guy swag" style that girls found endearing.

They didn't start recording until late 1982 after they got discovered by Maurice Starr but the songs that was on their debut album Candy Girl were recorded from 82 to 83. The songs that was from their self-titled second album were recorded from early 1984 to that summer including Cool It Now that was how his voice was then. If you listen to the stuff on Candy Gilr & the New Edition albums his voice changed

Ralph Tresvant was born prematurely which is why he didn't go through puberty until later and that is the reason his voice is high and that is his real voice for people asking. Although he sounds like he's only 9, Ralph Tresvant was 16 years old when N.E. recorded this song and video for their second album (their debut album also features his same high-pitched voice). Tresvant's voice started changing shortly after this video. YouTube has unintentionally humorous video of his transitional period too lol.
