It rains quite a bit in Japan, so its the luck of the draw heh

I think $1k for the tickets, and about $500-600 for accomodations for both Kyoto and Tokyo combined (we stayed in a hostel in Kyoto so it was cheaper - very nice and clean!). Our budget for food was around $500 with transportation provided via JR Rail Pass (google it to find it). The sights should only set you back a total of $50 total as they're usually super cheap.

i think $400 is the cheapest (LA - JPN) from thai airline. thats what i used to take.

is that open jaw? because the airport we arrived in was different than the airport we left from.

no but you can take night bus. tokyo to osaka(or kyoto) is about $30-40 i guess.
