Having watched several of your other handgun penetration videos, I am surprised at the general lack of penetration depth of the 556 by comparison to the handgun bullets despite its vastly superior energy. This is highly counter intuitive to me and I wonder wether there is a simple explanation for the phenomenon. Is it simply the weight difference or is the hydrostatic factor responsible for the smaller bullet dumping its energy much earlyer.
This could actually be considered a "failure". While I agree this was still great performance, most people tend to agree that if the M193 doesnt break at the cannelure, then it didnt perform properly. I have tested this same bullet before, and in my experience, different brands will tend to break and others wont. Of course it could be lot to lot variation in the lead hardness and jacket thickness, but these bullets are expected to break all the way down to 2600 FPS or so. Great test BTW!!!
You don't see this kind of temperary strech cavity with handgus because those bullets are a lot slower. A high velocity rifle rounds will do that but not the slower pistol rounds.
If time permitted, I would enjoy a video showing your procedures for slicing and investigating the wound channels. I am impressed with your apparent professionalism, & would enjoy watching your technique.
If you get a chance, do you think you could test some .223 Zombie Max? I'd like to see what that expands like compared to the 5.56 XM193 for hog hunting. I'm thinking that the XM193 would be a good coyote round as well.
What is the difference between the 193 and the 855 other than the 855 having the green penetrator tip (and thus a little more weight)? Is it safe to mix both in the same mag if my AR's are all rated 5.56. Thanks in advance for any insight. love the channel and appreciate what you do.
this is good stuff. XM193 is the only ball ammo that i use for home defense and it's reputation to separate into pieces (especially above 2500 fps) is why. but as of right now, i have a PMAG full of 55grain hornady V-max to get the job done since i depleted my stock of 193's.

Outside walls ARE insulated, and I insulated under my floor several years ago. Roof is insulated. It doesn't happen every year but we do get into single digits and have been at 0 degrees in recent years.

Very nice shot placement in the SIMTEST and you could just see how the energy lifted the SIMTEST media. Awesome ballistics test. Just super clear close-ups, keep up the great work.
I think the Military needs to go back to a 18inch barrel..the M4s look good but as TN said you loose 10 percent of your velocity with a 16 inch barrel...and once the bullet gets under 2700 fps the bullet looses it fragmenting properties...
If you live within a couple hundred yards of your neighbors you should be using frangible ammo. Two people in the last month are facing fines and possible jail time in oregon for accidental discharge of an ak-47 and ar15 that penetrated their neighbors homes. It was lucky no one got hurt.
I bought 1000 rounds of the xm193 and they were popping primers about every 60 rounds on average. The spent primers would get caught either in my trigger group or the grooves for the bolt locking lugs. Both cases caused a major failure requiring a field strip of the rifle sometimes with a live round in the chamber. I will not buy again.
@theKGB65 There was one at one point in time, but unfortunately they decided to make the "R" in their name stand for "Republican" rather than "Rifle," so...
As usual, excellent video. Thanks for showing us this and all of your tests! I already have some of this ammo, but now every time I see it I'm going to stock up on it!
I've read that a rifle with 1:9 twist rifling will "over stabilize" M193 ball. So you don't get as effective a bullet breakup as you would with a 1:12 twist barrel.
Would be interesting to see a similar test with the M855 round with a 1:9 twist barrel. I bet it would break at the cannelure.
i dont blame you for not using balistics gell with that drywall that would be a pain in the ass trying to get all of that dust out of your simtest. moast likley you would have had to throw it away.
Nope. The "target" zone is small in consideration of the bullet possibly diverting path and not going straight, as is typically expected with handgun tests. I'm about to post a shotgun slug test where the block could have been much taller....just never know what these things will do. If you had bone in the equation, a shot could deflect and travel quite a distance in a 90 degree direction. I can only make these blocks so large.
I really like your ballistic gel tests. They're well made and very infomative. Thanks you for that. Could you do long range tests with the 5.56 M193 or even better the M855? Given all the talk about the lethality of NATO's standard rifle caliber (or the lack of), it would be interessting to actually see the performance of that round at various distances.
@dinsch lethality is all situational, this test was a decent representation of what would happen to a soft living target hit by a 5.56 mil spec. with all the fragmentation you get pieces of that bullet going places, hitting organs and whatever else is in a torso. I once went out to the desert with a box of surplus SS109 5.56 and shot a gel torso my friend had brought at ~500 yards (i couldnt really see the target). the round only broke into two large pieces at that range.
@metalraider187 Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the SS109 the green tipped steel core penetrator also called the m855 ? Its not supposed to break up it did whats it was designed to do. the m193 wouldn't be effective at that range I don't think at all.
@pac6010 SS109 is the NATO (european name) for the m855, they are the same round essentially, though the rest of the euro alliance wouldnt take it as standard without a hotter load of powder. I think the standard weight for m855 and ss109 is 62 grains for the bullet. m193 is a 55 grain bullet so obviously it would lose too much energy at that range to violently shatter.
@pac6010 and yes the ss109 and m855 both have the penetrator tip, though on soft targets there isnt much difference between steel core or non steel core rounds, they both frag and leave nasty wounds.
@Glockcrazy19 even if it didn't (I think its likely it would), you'd be looking at a lot of trauma to the blood vessels surrounding it, including the aorta and vena cava, which would almost certainly be fatal, incapacitating within seconds. The problem is, the chest isn't a solid mass like the gel block--the stretch cavity won't be as consistent/predictable passing through lungs. No matter what it hits in your torso, though, you will not be having a good day.
Great video. It would be very interesting to see what happens to the results if the projectile enters the media at sub sonic speed. My theory is that it will just travel through the media without turning. If you ever find the time to test that it would be greatly appreciated.
I shot some XM193 into a row of water jugs and could not find the bullet. I thought it was a fluke so I did it again. The first two water jugs, in the row, exploded both times. Both times the bullet exploded and there were no fragments to be found. I have a picture where one hit someone in the thigh and the wound is unbelievably bad.
"Thats gonna hurt!" only for a second or two, then it'll all feel better ;( thanks for sharing this one with us, the severity of that stretch cavity was surprising.
Thanks great review as usual. I would like to comment about Acoustic Trauma. Persons using a carbine that can cause acoustic trauma, such as an AR, should not fire the weapon indoors without hearing protection or silencer. Permanent ear damage can occur.
Are these the rounds that Western militaries are no longer allowed to use? I had a feeling that they can only use FMJs on the battlefield now, but I could be wrong. Any knowledgeable person who has an idea - their input would be most appreciated.
@TheEnglishRedneck45 My understanding is that the Hague Convention only applies when two signatories are at war with each other. Meaning that would apply in say, Afghanistan. Also, I'm pretty sure the United States did not sign that part of the convention, but that may be wrong.
The U.S. does use hollow point ammunition (they call it "open tip match", see Mk. 262).
"During the 1970s, NATO members signed an agreement to select a second, smaller caliber cartridge to replace the 7.62 mm NATO cartridge. Of the cartridges tendered, the 5.56x45mm was successful, but not the 55 gr M193 round used by the U.S. at that time. The wounds produced by the M193 round were so devastating that many[6] consider it to be inhumane.[7][8] Instead, the Belgian 62 gr SS109 round was chosen for standardization"
I haven't read all 225 comments up to this point, but... How about putting the jugs in front of the drywall wall mock up, then putting the gel on the back? I don't know if there is such a thing as so many inches of gel equals one human body, but maybe put that many inches of gel in front of the wall, then the wall, then the really big block of gel?
Thanks for doing this video. Its always good to see some real data regarding bullet terminal performance. I like how you tested a round normally used for target shooting, since that is the bulk of the ammo that most of us are shooting regularly.
That stretch cavity is simply amazing. I wouldn't have thought that it would be that large given the size of the round; I forgot about the pressure that it causes when entering.
Great test. FMJ can definately get the job done with rifle calibers. Can you imagine what a JHP or ballistic tip would have done to that block? You might want to wear a rain coat. ;)
That ammo is my first choice for reserve ammunition. It's a great all around load.
i dont think that would be the best home defence round, arent you worried about overpenetration? That round could go through someone and take out a child riding a bicycle the next block over
@sharkinfested are you kidding me? that round would not open up at all, at close range it would pass through a person and still be doing over 1000 fps guaranteed
@deadtofall666 Actually, at high velocities the M193 projectile tumbles through soft targets, becoming overstressed, causing it to fragment. Exactly as shown in the video that you apparently didn't watch...
@dangerranger610 if u get shot by any bullet it will most likely not pass through you due to the bullet hitting a bone causing a ricochet thus tearing up your insides
I've been doing much research reguarding the m193 and m855 and everything u said in the begining is excelent. Awesome video. Love everyone of ur ammo tests, stop being so moddest hahah.
the 55 gr doesnt get enough credit, its not as popular as the surplus 62 gr I guess because it doesnt have the "cool" green tip. The 55 gr is a MUCH better round than the 62gr green tip. Im surprised the jacket didnt break in half and fragment though. It should at anything over 2700 fps (so Ive read)
i thought normal ar15's where made for the civillian .223 round rather than the nato 5.56mm round? Do you need a special license to buy army surpless ammo and parts for your ar15 to fire them?
My AR's have the "Wylde" chamber for shooting both calibers. I don't need any license for surplus ammo or spare parts. I have ample supplies of both. For now, the 2nd Amendment covers that in my area, at least until the New World Order tries to take it away.
I'm very jealous! Check my channel, my pcp rifle is the most powerful gun you can have in the UK without a license which sucks! Thanks for the info :)
@srspower you can own full bore rifles in the uk for both hunting and target shooting .22lr .44mag.223 .308 even .50cal. just to name a few. join a club and you can get a gun licence. the only thing you can't have is semi auto full bore but you can have semi auto rimfire .22lr .17hmr. it is possible top get both semi auto rifles and centrefire pistols but they require a section 5 licence which is impossible for most people to get.
@srspower most manufacturers today build for 5.56 pressures, even in guns marked ".223" because of how common surplus ammo is on the civilian market (good idea to check with the manufacturer before trying this, though). No, in the US, we don't need special licenses to use military surplus ammunition (not ball ammo, anyway...maybe for incendiary or armor-piercing). There's plenty of civilian ammo that meets or exceeds its performance anyway, so what would be the point?
@SupremeAmerican it's a "temporary" cavity because there's not a cavity there anymore. ever see clear gel tests? there's a really big hole in it as the bullet goes through, then as it continues the hole gets smaller till it leaves a "permanent" cavity that is going to stay there. that BIG expansion is the "temporary" cavity because it's only that big temporarily.
Recycle everything for the next test. The new block cures in roughly 4 days.
I could have cryogenically frozen at least one half of that temporary stretch cavity and sent it on a worldwide "ballistic wonders tour" as an opening act for Ted Nugent.
@tnoutdoors9 Do you think you will start testing more rifle rounds with ballistic gel that would be cool to see 7.62x39mm stack up against 5.56x45mm. I would love to see more rifle rounds tested especially just regular FMJ.
Very possible. The bullet had media between it and the board, could have been after a richochet. That was just particle board and it had already been subjected to a crapload of ammo testing, water spills, etc.; just a matter of time before it finally cracked.
I've got a 1:7 twist, would this ammo be a good option for me? I was looking at that frangible ammo from Sierra which is a bit heavier I think. The only ammo I have though is the m855 green tips 0_o
At this distance, you could have a pitted barrel and you would be fine. There is debate on the accuracy/stability of 5.56 and .223 rounds at longer distances relative to barrel twist. For home defense, you are launching a projectile at 3000 fps with over 1100 ft lbs of energy. Definitely a deterrent or stopper for someone intent on causing you harm. Green tips are essentially 3000 fps ice picks in soft tissue.
It's awesome to see what some rounds are capable of. I sure am glad you have the gel for testing purposes. It gives more perspective in the testing results. Keep up the great work.
Where do you get that stuff? (jell) I would like to do some testing on different calibers, and maybe 12 gauge. I would like to put a few myth's to bed myself'.
for short barrels try mk262 mod 0 or mk318 mod 0

semiautoriflelover1 1 month ago
ARs shoot low at close range due to the height of the sights above the bore.

i have to say you're ballistic tests are the best out there. keep em coming. thanks for posting such detailed info.

One of your best tests thus far! My shotgun may be looking at taking a back seat to the AR after this. Keep up the great work!

XM193 is the worst ammo for consistency, I get popped primers and horse crap groups.

TheEnglishRedneck45 1 month ago
@TheEnglishRedneck45 That was a FMJ.
strakill 1 month ago
@strakill Thank you for the info - I should have read the description!
Reading about, it seems I was wrong about them not being allowed to use fragmenting rounds. Might be getting it confused with hollowpoints. My bad.
Cheers
TheEnglishRedneck45 1 month ago
@TheEnglishRedneck45 My understanding is that the Hague Convention only applies when two signatories are at war with each other. Meaning that would apply in say, Afghanistan. Also, I'm pretty sure the United States did not sign that part of the convention, but that may be wrong.
The U.S. does use hollow point ammunition (they call it "open tip match", see Mk. 262).

Direct quote from Wikipedia...

I like how you tested a round normally used for target shooting, since that is the bulk of the ammo that most of us are shooting regularly.
xdfanatic 1 month ago in playlist THE TOP SHELF
That stretch cavity is simply amazing. I wouldn't have thought that it would be that large given the size of the round; I forgot about the pressure that it causes when entering.
JBjeter17 1 month ago
Great test. FMJ can definately get the job done with rifle calibers. Can you imagine what a JHP or ballistic tip would have done to that block? You might want to wear a rain coat. ;)
That ammo is my first choice for reserve ammunition. It's a great all around load.

urnzwayzmoove 1 month ago
i dont think that would be the best home defence round, arent you worried about overpenetration? That round could go through someone and take out a child riding a bicycle the next block over
deadtofall666 1 month ago
@deadtofall666 Did you watch the video? It clearly showed that the round WON'T over-penetrate a soft target.
sharkinfested 1 month ago
@sharkinfested are you kidding me? that round would not open up at all, at close range it would pass through a person and still be doing over 1000 fps guaranteed
deadtofall666 1 month ago
@deadtofall666 Actually, at high velocities the M193 projectile tumbles through soft targets, becoming overstressed, causing it to fragment. Exactly as shown in the video that you apparently didn't watch...
dangerranger610 1 month ago
@dangerranger610 if u get shot by any bullet it will most likely not pass through you due to the bullet hitting a bone causing a ricochet thus tearing up your insides
JUKEBOXX1990 1 month ago
I would have expected a bit more fragmentation but it doesn't seem to have made much difference, those cavities speak for themselves!

the 55 gr doesnt get enough credit, its not as popular as the surplus 62 gr I guess because it doesnt have the "cool" green tip. The 55 gr is a MUCH better round than the 62gr green tip. Im surprised the jacket didnt break in half and fragment though. It should at anything over 2700 fps (so Ive read)
freestylmx311 1 month ago
i know you're mainly an AR guy, but it would be interesting to see the effects of this round compared with surplus 5.45x39

i thought normal ar15's where made for the civillian .223 round rather than the nato 5.56mm round? Do you need a special license to buy army surpless ammo and parts for your ar15 to fire them?
srspower 1 month ago in playlist THE TOP SHELF
@srspower
My AR's have the "Wylde" chamber for shooting both calibers. I don't need any license for surplus ammo or spare parts. I have ample supplies of both. For now, the 2nd Amendment covers that in my area, at least until the New World Order tries to take it away.

@tnoutdoors9
I'm very jealous! Check my channel, my pcp rifle is the most powerful gun you can have in the UK without a license which sucks! Thanks for the info :)
srspower 1 month ago
@srspower you can own full bore rifles in the uk for both hunting and target shooting .22lr .44mag.223 .308 even .50cal. just to name a few. join a club and you can get a gun licence. the only thing you can't have is semi auto full bore but you can have semi auto rimfire .22lr .17hmr. it is possible top get both semi auto rifles and centrefire pistols but they require a section 5 licence which is impossible for most people to get.
pinhead1304 1 month ago
@srspower Most civilian AR15s are 5.56x45, allowing people to shoot both. There are no restrictions on that ammo as far as I know.
curiousmarksman7 1 month ago
@srspower I have a Bushmaster AR15. It is stamped on the barrel .223 and 5.56 mm
nbadhorse 1 month ago
@srspower most manufacturers today build for 5.56 pressures, even in guns marked ".223" because of how common surplus ammo is on the civilian market (good idea to check with the manufacturer before trying this, though). No, in the US, we don't need special licenses to use military surplus ammunition (not ball ammo, anyway...maybe for incendiary or armor-piercing). There's plenty of civilian ammo that meets or exceeds its performance anyway, so what would be the point?

TacticalGummyBear 1 month ago
@TacticalGummyBear Mostly the same thing at close range. It won't fragment as well at longer ranges though, due to the lower velocity.

fraja777 1 month ago
I think the 2 boards on both tests also question the accuracy of the term ''temporary'' cavity.
SupremeAmerican 1 month ago
lol. that ''temporary'' cavity looks awfully permanent if you ask me.
SupremeAmerican 1 month ago
@SupremeAmerican it's a "temporary" cavity because there's not a cavity there anymore. ever see clear gel tests? there's a really big hole in it as the bullet goes through, then as it continues the hole gets smaller till it leaves a "permanent" cavity that is going to stay there. that BIG expansion is the "temporary" cavity because it's only that big temporarily.

do you throw away the media when you are done or do you keep the interesting stuff like what you found today?
4lifeadventure 1 month ago
@4lifeadventure
Recycle everything for the next test. The new block cures in roughly 4 days.
I could have cryogenically frozen at least one half of that temporary stretch cavity and sent it on a worldwide "ballistic wonders tour" as an opening act for Ted Nugent.
tnoutdoors9 1 month ago 12
@tnoutdoors9 Do you think you will start testing more rifle rounds with ballistic gel that would be cool to see 7.62x39mm stack up against 5.56x45mm. I would love to see more rifle rounds tested especially just regular FMJ.
J3rEmY17 1 month ago
I wonder if the round hit the board and then bounced back into the block. Thats a massive amount of energy released.
yellowbusguy 1 month ago
@yellowbusguy

The only ammo I have though is the m855 green tips 0_o
righyanb 1 month ago
@righyanb
Green tips are essentially 3000 fps ice picks in soft tissue.
tnoutdoors9 1 month ago
@tnoutdoors9 55 grain should actually be ok in a 1:7. If you're worried buy a box and try it before picking up a case.
dangerranger610 1 month ago
