I have one of these drives I just came accross today and found this video while searching for information on the drive. I'm willing to sell the drive for $150 to anyone who wants it..... email me at will_bess@hotmail.com
As the drive runs down, the spindle turns into a generator, running the stepper motor toward the Landing Zone of the disk. When it gets there it hits the endstop - and tries to keep going. The stepper motor rattles against this stop for what's left of the power it's receiving, making the distinctive knock. It's harmless and part of the disk design.
Nope... that sound means it's JUST fine. Hahah... I have one of those, along with an ST-225 in a KayPro PC that my parents bought way back in 1986 when I was 8 years old. It made that same sound way back then. The jet-engine spooling up sound, and then the thumping sound. Man, brings back memories of playing Starflight in Herc.
thats just the strange sound it makes... i have this in an old computer that i cant find the maker of, if anyone can help its a Cherry Turbo 386. beast of a thing.
@ZnaxQue It depends on where the heads are on the disk when power's lost.
For example, in this video they were across the disk from the LZ, so it took a bit before it knocked.
Conversely, if the heads are already almost there, it'll knock a lot longer and sooner.

@ST0N3R420X420 That knock is the autopark working.
