I like it but it is very much a Devo rip off isn't it. From Q: Are We Not Men A: We Are Devo Their first album from 1978 but they had material from that album released on demo in '75.
This band kicked SO MUCH BUTT! I miss them. Saw them 3 or 4 times back in the day. New York City summer 1990 was a trip! So cool, so early, so underrated!
The stations mentioned or listed that I actually heard back then (when I lived outside of NYC and took a trip to San Diego) are WNEW, "Kiss FM", "91-X", "92-KTU", WLIR and WPLJ,
wow, I never even knew they made a video for this !! gawd, they were such an amazing live band....one of their shows was the only time I have ever broken part of myself...haha
Saw Fishbone back on October 14th, 1988 in Chicago, IL at the Cabaret Metro.
Hands down, it was the most over-the-top show that I've ever been to. Just nutso.
During the first couple of songs, Metro bouncers went after the stagedivers. Fishbone stopped mid song, and Angelo told the crowd if they were going to stagedive, then they better do it right. Security backed off and then it went insane from there.
I have NEVER seen so many people stagedive. Literally like a waterfall of bodies.
People just jumping off of the stage amps, dashing full speed across the stage and then somersaulting (yours truly) headfirst into the crowd.
Guys diving. Chicks diving. Kids diving. Surprised that I didn't see little old ladies with canes diving or people in wheelchairs diving. Wouldn't have been the least bit out of place.
Next day, the Chicago Tribune's music critic did a wonderful review of the show. Boiled down to this: "Bodies. Bodies everywhere. Just flying bodies."
I've always thought this was one of their most ingenious songs. Up there with 'waitin for the one day' in terms of ironic depth. In each of these, the verse and chorus take on two, seemingly opposed, conversant voices. They allow the interplay of these strawman perspectives to play out without actually commenting on them except with the manner of delivery. Sorry, I'm a nerd who loves Fishbone.
@DirkStarrz nothing like DEVO. their straight up ska and funk with a whole lot of soul! i've seen them over 30 times in the 80's. yes! i'm a BONEHEAD.... I'M JUST SAYIN'. I HAD TO SAY SOMETHING. THEIR MY FAVORITE BAND OF ALL TIME.
@DirkStarrz that particular bit is sung by Kendall Jones, their guitarist, who usually didn't sing any lead vocals. This song and Party at Ground Zero are exceptions.
I saw Bad Brains and the singer of this band was standing in the crowd right next to my friends and I. It was rad. He had this huge Bongo Drum strapped around him just chillin there listening to the Bad Brains. Then I got stoned off some joint smoke in the room. No joke this shit was rad.
Hmm anyone know what bass Norwood's playin there? I fuckin love it :L I've seen the dude from Big Black playin one too can't make it out...not some kinda 80s Ibanez?
I just saw Angelo at the Avalon in Hollywood. He is still an amazing artist and Fishbone are still one of the most unforgivably obscure bands of all time. They are way overdue for their place in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame!
At 1:37, the guy sounds like he took singing lessons from Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo, lead singer.) I remember having this on extended lp. Great song. Love it. Thanks Maruco1 for bringin' a good memory to me head...
Back when local radio mattered and was truly local radio, when stations had real flesh and blood DJ's, and the corporations didn't run everything. RIP WNEW-FM.
Wow, this was my theme song back when I was 16 years old. I think I listened to this song everyday for about a year. Defined the underground funk rock soul ska scene of the 80's.
@djpetenice I bought this album when it came out, and for a couple of days I drove around LA playing this song all day long, I couldn't stop. This beat is to die for.
