thank you for the very well instructed tutorial... I have tried numerous patterns and tutorials and had to unravel my project as it never worked out as imagined or hoped for due to the lack of the complete process or perfect instructions. Thank you, not only am I excited to start my blanket I am confident it will turn out perfect and not become a project to have to unravel.
Bless you! I've been crocheting for YEARS and this stitch has been the only one I've never been able to get.. and you have fixed that! YAY i am so excited! THANK YOU!
Need help! I picked up my project and started crocheting on the beginning row...couldn't understand why that row was weird and cut it off...only to realize that it was the beginning row..so now its kinda stretched out..any suggestions????
@jrains1106 Yes it would be sets of 12. The chances are great that you will not end up with an exact number so be prepared to sew in extra chains at the end.
Teresa....... I was wondering..... can you popcorn a chevron... I mean can you do a popcorn stitch in a chevron pattern..... or zig zag a popcorn stitch.... am I making any sense?
I look forward to hearing from you!! and thank you ahead of time for your time!!!
@tjw1963 i am making a blanket and i have 21 zig zags i did the first row like you said to but then when i tried to do the second row i would try to do the double crochet before the decrease and i would have to do four instead of five is that right?
@camio5959 You should have 5 individual stitches on each slope. Open the video details below the video and you will see a link to my crochet blog. There are symbol instructions that represent the actual pattern. You can match your work to the symbol instructions.
how many chains you made for this sample , because I always used to make samples and add to my album works .After that i make any projects . so please tell me
I had the same trouble as some others. I did 12 plus 6 and came up short!! It was cruddy that I chained over 100 and worked the entire thing untill I realized I was short chains..... ugh!
when you do the double crochet decrease in the second row do you skip 2 still or just one? For some reason my stitches do not match in row 2 even though I made sure to count in the first row
HI Teresa...thanks again for the wonderfully made video instructions on the ripple crochet as always I enjoy learning from you. One quick question....when you get to the end of the row is it always a half double stitch decrease? i suppose I missed that part of the instructions and my afghan is starting to take a weird shape....please help....thanks.........a fan in need
Theresa I am new to crocheting but after viewing this short video that has been very helpful I feel that I can do it. Thanks so very much! Please keep helping us!!!!
@SexiiChick616 There are a couple of things to keep in mind, practice and take a break if you feel that you are getting frustrated. I will send you a playlist with the beginner stitches.
@tjw1963 Hi Thersea I am also fairly new to crochet and subscribed to your videos. Your channel is my encyclopedia of crochet. Could you also send me that playlist you sent her pretty please?
Theresa, you are my hero. Your tutorials have been so helpful. I've made over 20 scarfs for Christmas presents with your help. I've used the v stitch, shell stitch and basket weave stitch. I'm about to attempt making another with this stitch. After this I would love to try making a Round ripple afghan. Would you consider doing a tutorial on making one?
Hey Teresa, I was just wondering if I could possibly get some advice from you. I want to crochet a Ripple crochet blanket for my son, but I'm fairly new and inexperienced when it comes to these things. I'm more of a tell me exactly how many stitches I need for the first chain kind of person. I don't understand what the whole multiple of thing is about. I could really use your help on this and I'd be forever grateful. Thank you so much!
Do you have any directions for a crocheted scarf with a ripple to it? It also has a button so you can wear it close to your neck. Would be great if you did!
I have tryed this pattern 4 times and each time I end up with 3 chains before I do the last decrease! How many do you start with in the demo? I did the 12 + 6 like you said but it did not work for me. I started out with 30 chains.
I just started making an afghan using the ripple stitch and thanks to you I am actually doing for the first time. I just can't tell you enough how grateful I am that you make these video's for me and thousands of other crocheters. The way that you explain everything with such a warm and comfortable voice just makes learning stitches or refreshing stitches so pleasureable. I start begin and end everyday with crocheting. Soooo thank you so much for everything.
i am having the exact issue as divatia, i chain 30 but come up short in the end. I have even checked into the written instructions and i am having the same issue. Also how do you do the "valleys" on the rows after the first, i seem to be doing the decreases wrong. I am skipping two stitches just like the foundation row but it doesnt seem to work out. please help. thanks.
@thesleepyteacup13 Maybe I can help with the answer on the valleys try skipping only 2 stitches on the foundation row and skipping only 1 stitch on the rest of the rows. She does it at 8:50 in the video
In the written instructions I notice that the pattern length is in multiples of 12+6 which I can understand and follow, but in the video I the only way I can follow to a T is if I chain in multiples of 14+7. Can you specify how many chains it took to make the swatch in this particular video to avoid any confusion? Besides that the tutorial is great. Thank you!
Finally! I'm so glad you do video demonstrations because I still get confused when reading patterns. Plus for a beginner like me, most patterns just plain don't make any sense whatsoever. Especially since everyone has different abbreviations. I'm pregnant and not sure what I'm having yet and I wanted to start on an easy crochet pattern for a blanket. I'd prefer to crochet because I can change colors quick and easy plus I don't have to deal with two needles.
You are the reason I signed up on YouTube, thank you so much for being so patience and detailed in explaining how to make a ripple crochet. I have watched many instructional crochet videos on YouTube and you are the best instructor I have found so far. Hope to learn more crochet stitches from you!
@acidentprone For example, if you wanted 8 ripples, you would take 8x12=96+6=102. You will make a chain of 102. Each set of 12 chains is what you need for each ripple. There will always be an odd amount of stitches at the beginning of each pattern stitch that you are doing, which is the 6 extra chains which are added on 1 time.
This beautiful pattern is going to be used by me to make an afghan ! Thank you so much ! I will post a vid response when i am done ! almost there ! luv it ! thanks again
Hi, I dont see the written instructions for this ripple variation pattern, I see the symbol instructions, is there a another place to look under your blog for the written instructions
I love it! I've been trying to find a ripple pattern that was easier than making various types of knots in between - this only makes you learn/make one extra knot.
My grandmother made me a red/white/blue ripple when I was in elem. When I was in high school, I wanted her to make it larger - she lengthened it and made a larger boarder. Most of my Christmas day photos have me cuddled up with that one afghan. I still have the afghan - it's about 27 years old. I am estatic!
yay! i finally found a cool pattern for a scarf, i want to ask you for advice. how do i make the color change not so obvious in the ends? i also learned color change from you thanx!!!
How the the color changes obvious? You can always do a single crochet edging over the edges, alternating colors each time you get to the color change.
i went for the tie, knot, sew, on my loose ends. it's working pretty well and you can't tell i did it. i will take a picture when i am done and send it via Facebook. again thanks a million for the pattern i'm having so much fun! and for a beginner it makes me feel good that my squares are now taking the shape of actual things! :)
i tried doing this with two colors, and after about 20 rows or so, i noticed the sides of the blanket were becoming wider, sort of like a trapezoid. i ripped it out and tried again but still ended up with a trapezoid looking shape to what i intended to be a baby blanket. i wonder where i went wrong?
That means the decreases are not being done on the sides if it is getting wider. I do have symbol instructions posted on my crochet blog which may be helpful for you to see the exact stitch placement. To the right or lower right of the video you will see "MORE INFO". Click on that to expand the box and you will find the link.
I do have a symbol chart posted on my crochet blog. You may find it helpful so you can see the exact stitch placement. My blog link is to the right of the video under "More Info".
I finally did it!!. This is how pathetic I am. It's Saturday night, My wife and I are home. I'm crocheting and reasonably happy. The Mets are losing to the stupid Phillies.
Yes they do. They even have a men's night which i will be attending the second sunday of every month. The ladiews there were very helpful. Oodles and oodles of yarn.
I did not realize you start the double crochet normally and then skip the next two stitches. At the end, When you said pull through half and skip only one stitch that's what had me confused. BTW, I went to the Lion Brand Yarn Studio in NYC yesterday and it was awesome. Thank you.
I bet that was fun, lucky you! If I ever get the NYC, hopefully that will be a stop of mine. Do they show any of the yarn making process or is it retail related?
There is an amount of stitches that make up each ripple. For this there are 12. For each ripple you want to make, you will do 12 chains. The 6 is the extra chains at the beginning of the work, done one time. If you wanted 12 ripples, you would take 12x12=144+6=150 for a chain of 150 to make 12 ripples.
My pattern states chain 252. The afgan will be 40X60. Can't get the 252 chains to come to 40" or is that what I should be doing. I'm really not sure. There are 7 sets not including the beginning set.
What you do is crochet a small swatch with the hook and yarn you will be using with the afghan. You will be able to estimate the size of the final piece from your swatch. You may never get an exact measurement but you can get close. It is possible that you crochet loose or tight from the author of the pattern. If you are ending up that your 40" is in the middle or a ripple you will need to adjust. You may need a larger or smaller crochet hook to get 40" at the edge of the ripple.
Thanks so much for this video! I have a question tho, my decreasing seems to take over at the ends, and soon, the whole ripple moves,. Eg. I start with 5dc at the end, and then slowly, they all disappear. Do you have any tips to fix that?
Counting stitches will help. Each time you decrease at the valley, you are taking away a stitch. When you increase at the top you are adding 1 stitch. Your count should remain the same on both ends and none should disappear. Somewhere you are skipping 1 to many stitches on the end.
i do not get what they are talking about multiple of 12+6 does it mean do twelve then add 6 do twelve then add 6 do twelve add six wouldnt that just be 18 18 18 or is it do any multiple of 12 then add six to it
12 is how many chains you need for each ripple set. It is preparing the foundation and trying to make sure you will have enough chains. The +6 amount is done only 1 time and is not repeated. That is the extra chain slack to make up the beginning. If you wanted 5 ripples you would take 12x5=60+6=66 for a starting chain of 66.
Massively impressed with the way my blanket turned out after trying this pattern using your tutorial video. Everything went perfect and the edges were so straight and even, it looks beautiful and I thank you so much for teaching me. :)
I always enjoy your videos.. I just want to say that in the second row of the ripple, It's not explained that you actually make the dc, ch 2 dc in the space of the previous increase.. right? I also found that instead of casting on 30 for the initial row, 37 seems to be the number-- I can't reconcile 30... am I doin' something dopey? Ah.. thanks.. Pat
If you look to the right of the video you will see "More Info". Under there is the link to my crochet blog with more information related to the stitch.
For this example, how many chains do I need to start with to complete this session? I thought maybe 30 at first, but I ran out of chain. Also there seems to be a little burp in the video when you are explaning the first double crochet decrease.
The chain amount is 30 for this practice swatch. I have a picture symbol diagram on my crochet blog. The link is located to the right of the video. The image will help you see the stitch placement in the chain.
I didn't complete an afghan with this demonstration, just a swatch. My crochet blog does have another variation of a ripple that I did many years ago.
OKay... So, mine doesn't really look like hers. I have done, well, attempted a ripple afghan before and I always ended up stopping because I was always coming up short at the end because the directions were wrong. And, something else that's weird, in my directions, you DC 3 times in one stitch instead of DCing once and chaining twice and DCing again (like in the video) to get the top of the ripple. Hm, learn something new everyday.
I am going to sound insanely excited about finding these instructions. My grandmother used to make many beautiful, ripple afghans. But she died before I decided that I wanted to learn to crochet. The piece that you are working on looks very similar to her work.
Thanks for posting this. I think that I will crochet a afghan in her honor. I am so happy about this.
Ok, I'm a little lost. I have tried this stitch 3 times now and I come up 2 stitches short on the end. What am I doing wrong. I chained thirty to start. HELP!
I have a stitch placement image of were each stitch goes on my crochet blog. It might be helpful to you to check it out. The information is posted to the right of the video tutorial.
Can you please tell me what size hook you used in this video and type of yarn and if it's 2 ply or 4 ply,I'm using 100% virgin orlon crylic yarn, 4ply,I thinks it's called sports yarn. I'm using a size H/8 hook. This is my first ripple afgahn and I'm not too sure about the size hook and type of yarn to use for this project.
Thanks so much for posting this video. I had a friend years ago who used to do this, actually it was his mom..lol. I've been thinking for a while about doing this very pattern but didn't know how until now so thanks!
Ah hah! I knew it was ME! I must be sure to follow your instructions by pausing and then play, stitch by stitch. One wrong move can throw the whole thing off. (hope my sides stay straight) You're such a good teacher. I admire your talent AND your patience!
I did the same things when I first started so that is how I know what could be causing the shape change. If you click on the "more info" link to the right of here, you will see a link to my crochet blog. I have symbol instructions so can see clearly the placement of each stitch. It might help.
(sry)one more question..I'm prob doing something wrong anyway, but how do I keep my edges of the single crochet ripple straight on both ends? Mine is straight on one end and the other one is slanting outwards. (it's hard when U have dyslexia) but I'm still trying. Thank you!
What I would suggest is counting very carefully when you get to the edge. Make sure that you are crocheting in the previous row stitches and not putting in additional stitches on your end row. For instance if you have 6 double crochet on your edge, count to make sure you are doing 6 double crochet exactly. You will be putting 5 double crochet in each stitch and the last double crochet will be in the previous chain. Make sure you are not adding in two stithes somewhere for a total of 7.
Okay. I wonder. Is there any way to avoid 'holes' in this pattern? I would love to have a smooth ripple stitch and can't seem to accomplish or find one. (even a dc ripple leaves holes for me) I wonder if I resorted to knitting if I could get that effect? Y'think? Just a thought.
I do have a tutorial of the single crochet ripple that you might want to take a look at. If you work the stitches solid and don't do the chain, you will avoid the larger holes. There will still be smaller holes by working many stitches in the same stitch.
Theresa, I cannot praise you enough!! You are the answer to many a frustrated crocheter, myself included. Your generosity in sharing yourself and these video's are truly an act of 'giving' and 'caring'. I just tried the pattern on the cover of this month's Crochet magazine (Noah's Ark blanket) and it looks nothing like the cover. I am so disappointed. It's a ripple stitch, but looks nothing like the cover. I'm sticking with YOU!! God bless!!
Thank you for your kind comments. Keep practicing and you will understand the sections of patterns that are confusing to you now. Feel free to ask questions in the comment section or you can private message me to ask question through my main channel page.
I have been trying and trying to find an easy wya to do the ripple stitch and could never find one. Try as I might I could never figure them out, until now!! thank you! Thank you! for the simple instructions on how to do the ripple. I feel like I can get it now. Thanks!!!!!
I got so frustrated I stopped. Now that you have posted this I know I will learn how to do the ripple. I tried soing it with sigle crochet stitch and the double crochet stitch. I could not get ti to line up when I turned on the 2nd row. sorry for the mistake in info you are SUPER. slimjleo1955

acidentprone 1 year ago
I was wondering what you mean by the multiplier is 12 +6...what does that mean?
acidentprone 1 year ago
@acidentprone It takes 12 chains to make each ripple. The +6 are the extra stitches at the beginning.
tjw1963 1 year ago
Ok, I see...so make my length in multiples of 12, like 36, 48, or 60 and then right at the end of the first row add the six extra stitches?
acidentprone 1 year ago
@acidentprone For example, if you wanted 8 ripples, you would take 8x12=96+6=102. You will make a chain of 102. Each set of 12 chains is what you need for each ripple. There will always be an odd amount of stitches at the beginning of each pattern stitch that you are doing, which is the 6 extra chains which are added on 1 time.

jgyrljeans4jesus 2 years ago
How?
tjw1963 2 years ago
I cant believe what i wrote didn't post....I was asking about The multiple is 12 + 6. does that mean i will make 18 chains?
jgyrljeans4jesus 2 years ago
If you are making a practice swatch, yes. You add 12 chains for each ripple you want to make.
tjw1963 2 years ago
This is so much more logical than the pattern I have, thank you again!

very good stich. i'm doing it right now as we speak and it's turning out very good.
Shochstetler602 2 years ago
It is great to hear that it is working for you.
tjw1963 2 years ago
Thanks so much

yay! i finally found a cool pattern for a scarf, i want to ask you for advice. how do i make the color change not so obvious in the ends? i also learned color change from you thanx!!!
AntagonisticApathy 2 years ago
How the the color changes obvious? You can always do a single crochet edging over the edges, alternating colors each time you get to the color change.
tjw1963 2 years ago
this is true, was just wondering if there was a way that they could be solid colors with no border
AntagonisticApathy 2 years ago
A ripple will not look right with a border. You can do a simple little edging if you needed to cover up sides.
tjw1963 2 years ago
i went for the tie, knot, sew, on my loose ends. it's working pretty well and you can't tell i did it. i will take a picture when i am done and send it via Facebook. again thanks a million for the pattern i'm having so much fun! and for a beginner it makes me feel good that my squares are now taking the shape of actual things! :)
AntagonisticApathy 2 years ago
i tried doing this with two colors, and after about 20 rows or so, i noticed the sides of the blanket were becoming wider, sort of like a trapezoid. i ripped it out and tried again but still ended up with a trapezoid looking shape to what i intended to be a baby blanket. i wonder where i went wrong?
ninjachc 2 years ago
That means the decreases are not being done on the sides if it is getting wider. I do have symbol instructions posted on my crochet blog which may be helpful for you to see the exact stitch placement. To the right or lower right of the video you will see "MORE INFO". Click on that to expand the box and you will find the link.
tjw1963 2 years ago
on the second row when you are decending do you skip two and go into three or skip one and go into two? that is where i am lost.
mommyhartman 2 years ago
I do have a symbol chart posted on my crochet blog. You may find it helpful so you can see the exact stitch placement. My blog link is to the right of the video under "More Info".
tjw1963 2 years ago
I'm also lost here and the symbol chart doesn't seem to help me figure it out either. :(

I appreciate the comment. Happy crocheting.
tjw1963 2 years ago
I finally did it!!. This is how pathetic I am. It's Saturday night, My wife and I are home. I'm crocheting and reasonably happy. The Mets are losing to the stupid Phillies.
SlugMcSlug 2 years ago
I am glad you got it. Saturday nights at home are fun.
tjw1963 2 years ago
Yes they do. They even have a men's night which i will be attending the second sunday of every month. The ladiews there were very helpful. Oodles and oodles of yarn.
SlugMcSlug 2 years ago
I did not realize you start the double crochet normally and then skip the next two stitches. At the end, When you said pull through half and skip only one stitch that's what had me confused. BTW, I went to the Lion Brand Yarn Studio in NYC yesterday and it was awesome. Thank you.
SlugMcSlug 2 years ago
I bet that was fun, lucky you! If I ever get the NYC, hopefully that will be a stop of mine. Do they show any of the yarn making process or is it retail related?
tjw1963 2 years ago
Where do you initially insert the hook to start the double crochet decrease?
Simon in N.J.
SlugMcSlug 2 years ago
I have a chart on my crochet blog that will show stitch placement for the ripple. It will show what stitches should remain unworked,
tjw1963 2 years ago
i love ripple patterns but i have trouble keeping the edges strait....it's the only one that i have trouble with and i can't figure why....
spankses 2 years ago
Hi HOw long is the chain initially? In your blog it says 12 + 6. What does it exactly mean?
ashdr1 2 years ago
There is an amount of stitches that make up each ripple. For this there are 12. For each ripple you want to make, you will do 12 chains. The 6 is the extra chains at the beginning of the work, done one time. If you wanted 12 ripples, you would take 12x12=144+6=150 for a chain of 150 to make 12 ripples.

My pattern states chain 252. The afgan will be 40X60. Can't get the 252 chains to come to 40" or is that what I should be doing. I'm really not sure. There are 7 sets not including the beginning set.
csriz 2 years ago
What you do is crochet a small swatch with the hook and yarn you will be using with the afghan. You will be able to estimate the size of the final piece from your swatch. You may never get an exact measurement but you can get close. It is possible that you crochet loose or tight from the author of the pattern. If you are ending up that your 40" is in the middle or a ripple you will need to adjust. You may need a larger or smaller crochet hook to get 40" at the edge of the ripple.
tjw1963 2 years ago
Thank you so much! I'm really enjoying crochet all because of your videos. Started with learning how to make a beanie and now I'm trying an afgan.
csriz 2 years ago
Thanks so much for this video! I have a question tho, my decreasing seems to take over at the ends, and soon, the whole ripple moves,. Eg. I start with 5dc at the end, and then slowly, they all disappear. Do you have any tips to fix that?
EmChick14 2 years ago
Counting stitches will help. Each time you decrease at the valley, you are taking away a stitch. When you increase at the top you are adding 1 stitch. Your count should remain the same on both ends and none should disappear. Somewhere you are skipping 1 to many stitches on the end.
tjw1963 2 years ago
i do not get what they are talking about multiple of 12+6 does it mean do twelve then add 6 do twelve then add 6 do twelve add six wouldnt that just be 18 18 18 or is it do any multiple of 12 then add six to it
101poptarts 2 years ago
12 is how many chains you need for each ripple set. It is preparing the foundation and trying to make sure you will have enough chains. The +6 amount is done only 1 time and is not repeated. That is the extra chain slack to make up the beginning. If you wanted 5 ripples you would take 12x5=60+6=66 for a starting chain of 66.
tjw1963 2 years ago
do you add 6 chains after every 12 chains?
winterzz2004 2 years ago
The 6 chains will be done just one time, when you are finished adding the increments of 12.
tjw1963 2 years ago
Massively impressed with the way my blanket turned out after trying this pattern using your tutorial video. Everything went perfect and the edges were so straight and even, it looks beautiful and I thank you so much for teaching me. :)

hey theresa..
Ah.. thanks.. Pat

can u make a scarf with this design?
maymillywatzdadealy 3 years ago
Sure, you can make a scarf with any crochet pattern stitch.
tjw1963 3 years ago
For this example, how many chains do I need to start with to complete this session? I thought maybe 30 at first, but I ran out of chain. Also there seems to be a little burp in the video when you are explaning the first double crochet decrease.
kdjbarr 3 years ago
The chain amount is 30 for this practice swatch. I have a picture symbol diagram on my crochet blog. The link is located to the right of the video. The image will help you see the stitch placement in the chain.

How does a finished afghan look like?
ladyylvali 3 years ago
I didn't complete an afghan with this demonstration, just a swatch. My crochet blog does have another variation of a ripple that I did many years ago.
tjw1963 3 years ago
Oh I see. I go there and check it out. :)
ladyylvali 3 years ago
SoSassy234 3 years ago
There are a lot of variations to the ripple stitch. It is a pattern stitch that can be very confusing. Hopefully it makes sense now?
tjw1963 3 years ago
Yes it does! I have done 3 rows with 3 colors and I love it!
SoSassy234 3 years ago
I am going to sound insanely excited about finding these instructions. My grandmother used to make many beautiful, ripple afghans. But she died before I decided that I wanted to learn to crochet. The piece that you are working on looks very similar to her work.
Thanks for posting this. I think that I will crochet a afghan in her honor. I am so happy about this.

Can you please tell me what size hook you used in this video and type of yarn and if it's 2 ply or 4 ply,I'm using 100% virgin orlon crylic yarn, 4ply,I thinks it's called sports yarn. I'm using a size H/8 hook. This is my first ripple afgahn and I'm not too sure about the size hook and type of yarn to use for this project.
roz3657 3 years ago
I hook 4-ply worsted weight "I" hooks.

tjw1963 3 years ago
(sry)one more question..I'm prob doing something wrong anyway, but how do I keep my edges of the single crochet ripple straight on both ends? Mine is straight on one end and the other one is slanting outwards. (it's hard when U have dyslexia) but I'm still trying. Thank you!
BonnieBear1955 3 years ago
What I would suggest is counting very carefully when you get to the edge. Make sure that you are crocheting in the previous row stitches and not putting in additional stitches on your end row. For instance if you have 6 double crochet on your edge, count to make sure you are doing 6 double crochet exactly. You will be putting 5 double crochet in each stitch and the last double crochet will be in the previous chain. Make sure you are not adding in two stithes somewhere for a total of 7.
tjw1963 3 years ago
Okay. I wonder. Is there any way to avoid 'holes' in this pattern? I would love to have a smooth ripple stitch and can't seem to accomplish or find one. (even a dc ripple leaves holes for me) I wonder if I resorted to knitting if I could get that effect? Y'think? Just a thought.
(((smiles)))) Bonnie
BonnieBear1955 3 years ago
I do have a tutorial of the single crochet ripple that you might want to take a look at. If you work the stitches solid and don't do the chain, you will avoid the larger holes. There will still be smaller holes by working many stitches in the same stitch.
tjw1963 3 years ago
Theresa, I cannot praise you enough!! You are the answer to many a frustrated crocheter, myself included. Your generosity in sharing yourself and these video's are truly an act of 'giving' and 'caring'. I just tried the pattern on the cover of this month's Crochet magazine (Noah's Ark blanket) and it looks nothing like the cover. I am so disappointed. It's a ripple stitch, but looks nothing like the cover. I'm sticking with YOU!! God bless!!
