  • Totaly kool dude! AWESOME! Time well spent in my opinion - I mean hey if a "fellow animator" (lmfao!) doesnt believe you did it - by yourself YOU KICKED ASS!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can't get this freaking song out of my head!

  • Pretty song! Awesum vid. U gonna make anymore?

  • I love it =)

  • I have no idea why but even though this song sounds so good. Every time i listen to it something bad happens to me O_O.

  • it's actually 2 people. One designs the machine and the other guy writes the music and makes the machine work. But still it is amazing.

  • 1 person cannot animate all that. trust me, as a fellow animator.

  • there is alot of repation every note is baced off of like 20

  • Yeah they can. You must have no kind of concept of the levels of obsession humans are capable of.

  • @MastaSquidge

i guess your right. I have a life.

  • @MrSuperPhun A moderated life and a moderated position, and that's just fine. Yet others are capable of exquisite achievements with their dedication. Whether this guy did it alone or with help, he may lay claim to fine, fine achievement.

  • No, it isn't... watch the credits.

  • not bad

  • damn why wasnot this in any of the animusic dvd's?

  • Hoooooolyyyy CRAAAAAAAAPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Frickin awesome 5/5

  • wow! this is just as good as animusic! you really made this?

  • Cool! Do you work with the Animusic guys?

  • Nope, I'm just a fan who decided to make something of my own :-)

  • @dhugger How? School? You should join the Animusic Team dude!

  • @dhugger I could have sworn you were part of animusic.

  • my old music teacher's former student created all the animusic videos my old teacher was mrs.holms

  • amazing how someone could put this together...

  • sort of reminds me of this thing at the mcwane's science center.

  • O.O I love that :)

  • this is beautiful :)

  • I decided to grade this with letters. But then I thought, that would be too much like school. SO I decided to rank it. But it was too complicated. Then I decided a Pass/Fail system. Then I thought, thats too insulting. ANd then, I took a survey and everyone wanted a Pass/Pass*.Then ppl voted for a pass/pass system. Suprising, YOU PASSED ROFLOL!

*guess what? LIVE FROM NEW YORK, ITS SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE! (not rrly, just thought that lil part was funny)

  • wha? that made no sense.

  • awesome 10/5

  • Reminds me of Pipe Dream from Animusic, except it's pipes, and not ball tracks. Very original, dhugger ^^

  • one word: AWESOME =D

  • Very nice work, brilliant animation and music ;).

  • were you inspired by animusic by any chance? just curious, and nice job, i really liked it =) 5*

  • I'd give him an A*

  • can you send me the verion in HD????pls, it's amazing, I know about animusic Pipe dream 1 and 2 but yours is my favourite...a little bit mystic and rock...Wow

  • if you need some help with writing MIDIs for ur vids ide be happy to write some =] let me know! Fantasmic job btw i love it!

  • A++

  • it is just like pipe dreams from animusic A+

  • i give it an A+

  • This is amazing. I could never do something like this. I make techno music, but I can't work 3D renders worth a darn. Haha. You have talent, my friend. That's for sure. And I like the dark look, it doesn't need a lot of lighting. It's a somewhat dark sounding song, it fits very well. :)

  • it was really really good, but a bit more of light quality would of made it even better.

  • I like the intricacy, color and melody. Would love to see it in higher quality!

  • high quality would rock!!!!

  • That's pretty cool and I like the tune! He cortinated that will the metal balls very well!

  • cool.

    reminds me of animusic.

could look a little better though

    with the lighting and all.

  • Great! Try to get High Quality or HD because then i would be able see so much more...

  • Would you mind if I send the MIDI of this piece to someone else?

  • Better color scheme than the other one, but it needs to be lit better, its quite dark. And with the camera zoomed out, a lot of detail is lost. But we can blame youtube for that.

  • i went to the website but i cant get any of the movies to open

  • I'd be great if we could get this in HD on YouTube.

  • WOW. I can hardly imagine how much work you put into this - it's incredible!! The music goes so well with the animation.

  • A feast for the eyes AND the ears! 5/5 (PS: imagine if someone actually built this thing!)

  • seems like something they would have at Epcot

  • Is it animusic?? oh well.... it is kool

  • no but it is similar to several of animusics videos

  • if this is really your work i would like to congratulate you, not everyone can make this, nice music btw

  • he didnt its anna music er whatever its called.....

  • Animusic didn't make this; it's just based on a similar concept (give credit where credit is due).

  • its called "Animusic" and Animusic did not make this.Animusic only has 2 dvds

  • Very talented. I can't imagine all the hard work that went into this creation. I have a hard time drawing a straight line with a ruler. :)

  • Do you have any plans for another? These are simply epic man!

  • What animation program is that?? Also that video was pretty epic. But if I missed any where the animation program was mentioned then just lemme know.

  • I used 3ds Max for the modeling and animation, Photoshop to create the textures, and GarageBand for the music. It was about a 300 hour effort total.

  • @dhugger HOLY FIZZOLI!!! I COULDNT DO A DAY PROJECT LET ALONE A 300 HOUR PROJECT! HAHA

  • I feel like I could stare at this for hours on end...

The choice of music suited the animation well I think, I give it five stars.

  • Hot damn. Not Animusic, but I mean, DAMN. You could at least be on their production team or give them a run for their money!

  • No dude, he made it himself... I`ve seen all the animusic stuff, this is original.

  • You should make this in real life. I think it's almost possible.

  • so many people are saying that this is just animusic.

  • Did you really make this entire thing by yourself dude?

  • Sure did!

  • you even nailed the shadows.....UN-FRICKEN-REAL!!

  • nice man!!!

  • how long did it take you to get used to 3ds Max?

  • how do you make this kind of stuff??? this is AMAZING... do you have to have some type of special camera/software?

  • I used 3ds Max for the animation, Photoshop for the textures, and GarageBand for the music... nothing special :-)

  • how long did it take you?

  • Nothing special? Hardly, this is one of the most awesome videos I've ever seen. Keep it up, I'd love to see another.

  • I like The beat and everything! You did a good job!!!!!

  • what program was used to animate it?

  • I remember when my mum got this in an email lol

  • dont think this would go up there with my favorites but its good and i'd listen to it again. and the animation is really good for the quality being bad on this web version. good job with it.

  • I've watched both the Animusic movies and this one was good in my book. :)

  • OMG! My new favorite!

  • what was your last favorite?

  • is this gonna be on animusic 3!?

  • unfortunaltle this is not animusic

  • looks like the controlls of pipe dream... behind that sound proof is another camera and a whole nother animusic XD!!! GREAT OB TO WHOEVER MADE THIS!!!

  • Wow, nice quality that rivals the animusic videos. Catchy music to a neat and often unique intrument. Good job!

  • Of course, without Animusic's revolutionary programs, its almost impossible to even come close to a vid that matches them. You did exactly that. Nice Job.

  • Hehehehehehehehehehe.... ummmm, you should come up with a better name before someone actually notices what Ball machine sounds like..*O*

  • I like the thought that some one is dedicated and clear-minded enough to make this kind of fantastic animation. Brilliant

  • good

  • amaizing!!!

very good but animusic is a little better.

  • thats cool

  • it looks like the "pipe dream"

    from animusic

  • EDIT:

oh well, now i see that the balls go through rail pipes and don't float in the air.

    thats nicer

  • You know, I could totally hear this in a Hollywood movie. Maybe in a dramatic romance, or some such.

  • thats awesome stuff mate. i love the lights and the shadows. congrats for the great work

  • how do u even make that cool song ?

  • shweet!!!

  • amazing!

    work of a genius.

  • im guessin this would take about a year mybe 2 to make this

  • It took about 300 hours.

  • great video.....what program is this anyway?

  • this so detailed how long did this thing take to render???!!

you should get a job w/ animusic they might make animusic III

  • Yeah really. Motion blur and everything...

  • I saw the one on your website, and it is indeed, perfect, except that sometimes the camera suddenly moves. If the camera movements were smooth, then it'd be great. It could really compete with Animusic. I wonder why they haven't hired you yet.

  • All I'd have to say is that the lighting is a bit dark, which make things unclear. It would look amazing if put onto the big screen, because of all the detail. In other words, HUZZAH! Very good.

  • Really good. But either Animusic copied you BIG TIME or you copied it BIG TIME!

  • Not sure if it's either. Derek didn't use (have access to) the "ANIMUSIC|Studio" software that Wayne Lytle/Dave Crognale utilized in developing the Animusic albums.

I would guess "The Ball Machine" and "Harmonic Balance" required a great deal more effort in getting the animation to match the music, even if the graphics themselves were simpler. Either way, they were great videos to watch...

  • I don't think Animusic copied him because the DVD came out in 2001. This one was posted in 2006, so I estimate he created this one around 2005 or later.

  • This is great!I've only seen 2 other vids like this.I was plannin on makin an instrument sorta like this, cept w/ just 1 steel track.u know how steel drums hav different pitches in 1 drum with different sized dents?I wanted 2 hav different sized dents along the track so u could just put a marble on & it would play a tune;sorta like this, but just one track, so all one would have to do is drop the one marble and that would be it. It might not be as interesting, but it could be done in real life.

  • this is really cool. it does confuse me however. i mean WHAT ON EARTH ARE THOSE STICK THINGS BOUNCING

    UP AND DOWN

  • So COOL!

Is there a program affordable you can make animated music like this?

  • thiws is amazing and can be possible to make with some changes

  • This piece that you done is great. I would put in your resume to Wayne Lytle. He is still looking for more people like you and maybe your work will feature on his next DVD.

  • I agree.

  • well, I'll say what I have, it's a good start. Dmitri, I disagree with you in that this is more "realistic" ... it's easier to be that way with a couple of instruments. Derek, when you are doing full orchestral pieces, then you will be full competition for Animusic.

  • You know, the thing that amazes me most, is that all these videos made by Derek are physically possible to make( with some good money) and few changes, which is one quality Animusic doesn't pocess with it's floating Drumsticks, and Bell Hammers. It's always nice to know that a animating artist is always in touch with reality. Bravo! Also Kudos for the music, Daniel H!

    Wonderful Video.

  • Outstanding ... good to see animusic has some competition.

  • AWESOME! 5/5!

  • Hey why you don't join with Animusic?

  • how do you make stuff like this? like what program do you use?

  • THE OPENING ROCKS

    (the first instrument)

  • This was a really cool video. I liked the music a lot. What program did you use for the animation?

  • thats awesome

  • The music is perfect and for your next animation I would put in less dark parts. Now the viewer must guess where the balls goes to. I think that the idea is that the balls recycle, I would show that more clearly.

  • Amazing!

  • I love these music machines....just inspiring, and this one sounds tight

  • lol is all i got to say

  • Wow that's nice work there. I liked a lot keep up the good work man!!

  • Nice stuff. Can't play the MOVs though. Guessing they are of a later format, but I don't want to upgrade my QT because if I do I get iTunes which I don't want. Any chance you could convert your MOVs to AVIs? Or even better would be to give us a Live Rendered version. ;)

  • I find that Quick Time takes a long time to load, so I waited around thirty minutes for these to load. And then I realized that I had to upgrade (which I did) and took another ten minutes. But the videos are worth it.

  • Meh, LIVE RENDERED is worth the 5-10MB of download. ;D

  • awesome i like it a lot

  • You're amazing...I watched this one and thought it was great, but watching the HQ one is even better.

Keep up the good work, i live for this kind of stuff, it's so interesting to be able to see what we're capable of.

  • cool video never seen this one before must be new

  • Amazing

Is this music driven like the animusics? Either way, still amazing

  • what software did you use to render this?

  • 3ds max

  • THIS IS WONDERFULL!

  • it like a see through version of animusic's pipe dream and that is what i like about this

  • dear Derick, i enjoy this video greatly, it definetly kills Animusic, no doubt, because of the creativty but seeems to be a remake of Pipe dream1 and 2 I sat a whole evenig listening to your amazing work. Can you tell me hot to Download it to Itunes from You tube because i seem to be lacking this knowledge or can you post it on Google video cause i know how to donload it there

    thanks for all your hardwork

we're cherring you on every step of the way

    thanks for a great video!!!!!

  • Sure, the video is nice. But how in the world does it "kill Animusic"? Their pipedream video was WAY better (no offense). Showed you exactly how every instrument worked, tons of lighting and close-ups, and everything was dead-on for timing. Again, this is a good video but it doesn't hold a candle to Animusic's.

  • That was true. I also argue that in the Ball Machine, each one of the steel balls were shown exactly where they are, whereas in Pipe Dream, they were concealed in pipes. Every instrument in this one worked very well, although I didn't like the way the camera jerked at certain times. Again, this is a good video but you're right, Animusic is still better.

  • If you wanna download for iTunes, check out his site and download the actuall MOV file.

  • all i say is kick buttox

  • You made this? That is incredible.

  • this would work for Animusic 3

  • just out of curiosity, have you (dhugger) talked to the guys at animusic. cos i think they are looking for people to assist them in making more animusics. I think you would be great!

  • That could have been even more amazing if you cranked up the lighting by alot because i couldn't see much, and also i didn't understand how the things worked other then the drumset so, that all.

  • Considering how long I just took to find this again, I really think I should favorite's it. :3 Its not official animusic but it kicks the crap out of all the other imitations.

  • Actually I take it back. I just watched a couple more times and it's perfect the way it is I wouldn't change a thing.

  • I give it 2 thumbs up for effort and originality. I think it's great. it's only set back is both individual and ambient lighting, I guess in a way it does set a mood but it could've been a little brighter. I would like to see the proper 720p HD version.

  • I'm not sure what i'm looking at my friend posted this for me, but i enjoed the ambient music so i guess i'd give it a thumbs up for some catchy beats LOL

  • i tink u r da best.lol u ledge

  • Is there another way to make one?

  • A way to make a music animation? Yeah, you can do it with any animation program. All it takes is time. This one took about 300 hours.

  • Man, I really wanna make one.:(

  • Did you use a free trial of 3ds max or did you buy it?

  • I own it. This animation took much longer than 30 days ;-)

  • I think you did a very good job on it. it was great! What did you use to make it?

  • 3ds Max, Photoshop, GarageBand, and iMovie

  • Wow, that was amazing. I liked it so much i wnet to the home site, found the high quality version, ripped the audio, and put it on my ipod.

My only complaint is that even in the high quality version, the individual notes are played before the instruments get to play them. Since many things move fast in this video, it is quite obvious and you might want to consider fixing that.

Other than that, it was excellent.

  • I know that the flash version on YouTube has problems with syncing the audio correctly, but you should not have that problem with QuickTime. I was very careful to make sure the audio was linked perfectly with the animation. I used a 90 BPM tempo when writing the music, so that 16th notes, which are the shortest notes we used, would be exactly 5 frames apart (with 30 fps video). Again, if you can, try downloading the movie from my site onto another computer. I promise everything will sync up :-)

  • Ah, yes. Thankz!

    And great job again!

  • You do some fantastic work! Keep teaching and making these animations.

  • Awesome!!! Kinda dancey! Do you have any dance songs (Or at least you think)?

  • absolutely love it. would there be any possible way to get the music?

  • Love this vid. Nice music and visuals

  • Nice like the style . a little better than Animusic, but i still love animusic. Nice graphics.

  • much better then animusic. by the way is there a place i can get the song, because i really like it.

  • This is perfect! Great sound and good video. This and Pipe Dream by Animusic are the best out there at this point. You have something here!

  • There's better Animusic's out there than Pipe Dream, unless you're going for realism. But even then, Drum Machine is more feasible than Pipe Dream.

  • hey would you ever be making more of these cause these are so good?

  • Hopefully I'll make more at some point. Time is the issue right now... I don't have much of it.

  • i like this one =3 it's calming and dark.....you should send it to Animusic....

  • Wonderful, but why so dark?

  • Neat

  • Pipe Dream and this one have their own amazing qualities. The music here is much darker, and it's not as obvious what the balls are doing, but that's all part of what makes this piece re-watchable. The full version you posted on your site is fantastic!

Seriously, you should send this to Animusic and make Wayne Lytle amazed at what fans like you are doing.

  • Animusic doesn't got that amazing style:p
