Jan was not injury free--he severely injured his shoulder 1998 requiring surgery, had surgery on his back before the 2004 Olympics, and very likely had many other injuries. He may not have thrown over his shoulder as much as others but he did torque his throwing shoulder plenty. He had so much wrap with his throwing arm that he could get away with throwing away from his body but probably at great risk to his elbow! On some throws he would be more over the top than others.
early in his career he threw with much more textbook form, I guess he figured could get much more power doing it the way he did it. Throwing as hard as he did would give anyone injuries, reason he is so much better then any javelin thrower ever.
yup whatever works for the individual , develop your own style , after throwing for over40 years and being injury free from it imust be doing something right , of coursethe distances have dwindledbut the desire is still here
i don't think its strange...its just what he does and it works for him. i heard somewhere that studying someone elses bad mechanics and tryin to mimic them is not good. we all have our own little quirks that seperate us apart.
he's not throwing over his schoulder, because he normally leans to the left in his throw. the javelin wil go in a straight line instead of going in a curve. he also compromises not throwing over his schoulder and so he can add more force.. (I believe :P)
he required to implant some kind of mechanical arm..

Jan could get in some interesting positions at high speed. If most of us got in those positions we'd probably break....he was VERY unique
