Isn't it a kind of prejudice thinks Katrina "big as a whale"? In the time the old story is based, fat people were so rare because of the famine that a big fat lady was a beautiful one of her kind. In 1934, people wasn't yet so obsessed about weight like today..
It was interesting that Ub Iwerks directed this animated short. He and Walt Disney were really good friends and they made lots of cartoons together. You can find his name on pretty much all the early Mickey Mouse cartoons.
When I was young, my late grandpa gave me a video with lots of old cartoons on it. This featured, along with Felix the Cat/Old King Cole and Little Black Sambo - I now realise they must have been made by the same company as the animations and music are all quite similar. I can't remember any of the other cartoons on the video, but it was a real joy to watch this after all these years!! Thank you for sharing :)
Does anyone know of another Headless horsemant cartoon, probably pre-war era, that isn't this one and isn't the Disney version? I saw it about 25 years ago on a worn 16mm print, and it had a very inventive chase sequence.
Its been nearly a year since you posted this question- any chance you ever located or found more info on the 16mm print in question? I would love to obtain it
I would have liked more of the headless horseman sequence. Oh, well: we do have a great animated version of the story from Disney. (Ub Iwerks is credited for "special processes" on that 1949 film.)
How come there wasn't any talking in there?

I thought Katrina was supposed to be as plump as a partridge...not as big as a whale.

Some of the music sounds like the same one they used for Merry Dwarfs.

What's funny is that when I was little, I thought these black guys in these cartoons were dogs like Goofy, only with shorter ears.
As a child, i never perceived anything racist about it.

Ub Iwerks was Disney's original partner. Also this was made 15 years before the Disney adaptation. Just putting some junk in perspective...

I like this cartoonist's style more but I think the disney headless horseman cartoon is waaaaaay better...and not so blatantly racist XD

@peppermeek - what about the scene at the "brawl" with folks eating just about anything - fish out of bowls, off the wall???

Cool, the only Headless Horseman cartoons I've seen were the Disney one and Scooby Doo ones. I don't think Hey Arnold's "The Headless Cabbie" counts.

Interesting little short, I really had no idea that there was any other animated version of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow besides the 1949 Disney one,
Thanks for sharing it with us.
