Kudos to Martina for paying respect to one of the main ladies (Lynn Anderson) who helped pave the way for her to be singing on more shows other than the Grand Ole Opry. Lynn Anderson was the first female country singer to headline and sellout Mad. Sq. Gdn. in 1974 and, throughout the '70s, was on a lot of "Hollywood" shows that you didn't normally see country stars booked on. Lynn's still got it, as is evident in this video. Thanks for sharing.
I think that Martina was a little reserve in her singing on this tune out of respect until Lynn started to improvise a bit around about 2:06 . Great song not done harm by being dusted off this way. Nice!
I don't thing the audience fully comprehended what they just heard....If artist were bible characters....It would be like having EVE & MARY on stage at the same time!
Too bad some of the other "modern" country singers don't realize the importance of helping remember the older artists and their songs. Much respect to Martina...........and many flowers for the great Lynn Anderson!!! Great video! Really enjoyed it!
I don't know much about country music. I found Martina's cover of this song and really loved it. I love the original as well. I don't really think one is SO much better than the other - they are so similar (the instrumentation, arrangement, song-styling). For me - it boils down to the voice and while I like both voices, I feel that Lynn's is a little brighter and goes with the song just a little bit better. But I could listen to either version anytime. It always puts a smile on my face!
2005 or 2006 ... 'Rose Garden' (by Lynn Anderson) was the biggest selling album by a female country artist from 1970-1997, until Shania Twain broke her long-standing "record"
The Scottish psychiatrist Dr. Charles Follen Mckim Maloney often listened to the Lynn Anderson version of this song in his flat in Edinburgh after a long day with patients.
Madame McBride, Quelle chance vous avez eue de pouvoir partager cette si magnifique avec Mme. Anderson. J'espère à mon tour, pouvoir le faire un jour...et peut-être que Mme. Anderson se joindra à moi... Merci xx
Jeez- This is turning out to be one of my favorite videos. I come back to it several times a week.Pure spontaneous magic. Lynn Anderson is so charismatic...
They don´t play it on the American country stations ? well come to Mexiko and you still can hear it, But Be carful, live here is "another world" so I don´t promise you a "ROSE GARDEN"!!!
I always thought Martina had one of the most powerful voices (and she does), but wow, Lynn Anderson comes out and belts this with all the sheer force of a runaway eighteen-wheeler. That's impressive, epeciall since she was in her late 50s in this clip. What a voice! It's criminal that modern country radio doesn't play her these days (or Dolly or Loretta, for that matter).
I know it's sad Country radio doesn't play much of anything other than Carrie, Taylor, and other younger singers. Martina doesn't get played too often either which is a shame.
Wow. Lynn puts more feeling into this as an older much wiser woman would AND She is still a very beautiful lady. Great to see her again as I haven't in forever. I think Lynn should do another recording with the feeling she showed here. Puts Life into it. I'd buy it. Thumbs up
A great cover of another Joe South gem... Joe wrote so many great songs for others & himself... "Games People Play" "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" "Don't it Make You Want to Go Home" "Hush" "Down in the Boondocks" "Clock Up On The Wall" "These are Not My People" - he also played guitar on Aretha Franklin's "Chain of fools"- Simon & Garfunkle's "Mrs Robinson"... Joe is an amazing talent - His birthday is Feb 28th - drop him a note! joesouth(dot)com
That brought tears to these eyes...how precious, two wonderful voices, neither doing the song justice but that's not really the point here. 5 stars from me
Lynn's version of Rose Garden wasn't the original. It was recorded numerous times by male singers but didn't become a megahit till Miss Lynn belted it out! If you really listen you'll see that the song was written to be sung by a man. "promise you things like big diamond rings" but Lynn truly made it her own.
Lynns not a southerner. She was born in South Dakota and raised in California. Personally I think her greatest achievment is her work with handicapped children. She has tirelessly devoted her time and money to many programs that teach handicapped children how to ride horses. That will be her true legacy.
@parkplaceIN Actually, Lynn was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and when she was a little girl, her family moved to California. Thanks so much for pointing out her work with handicapped children!!!! Lynn often quotes her late grandmother Grace Anderson: "The best thing for the inside of a child is the outside of a horse!"
Country stars didn't used to have silky smooth voices like they must now...this is a really cool duet because it brings two generations together...works well. Lynn seems like she could be a member of anyones family...so real and lovely, and seems like she would be the nicest person you ever met...just as southerners were known for...Martina is younger, hotter, and has a smoother voice...it's two generations. luv it
you haven't listened to the Opry lately. Greats like Loretta, Jan Howard, Jean Shepard...their voices aren't as strong anymore. It comes with age, not according to how much u use it. They use theirs every Saturday nite.
Also, whats great about Lynn is that so many older artists have lost their voices to some degree. Lynn, like Connie Smith, still has an incredibly strong voice.
The cool thing about her new clasics album is that before she was even an Opry member, each time she used to play the Opry she'd do two songs: one of hers and a classic in tribute to an artist of the past/former Opry member. What a great woman to remember her heritage.
I was at the Opry the night they were on together, and seeing this in person was FANTASTIC!!!! Lynn and Martina - two fantastic singers and entertainers who both have a lot of respect for each other and others in their profession! Lynn's a sweetie, too, very kind and caring (Martina also has that reputation).
Somebody mentioned Ray Price - he appeared on this segment of the Opry with Martina that night, too. I'm glad to see Martina salute so many country greats on her Timeless album.
Nice to see Martina honoring the lady who paved the way for singers like her, Shania and Faith Hill. Lynn was, as someone said earlier, the original country to pop DIVA!
