  • Wonderful guys, wonderful song. So many brilliant songs. Love them x x x

  • My father used to sing/whistel this song, thanks for putting it up

  • This brings back old memories of seeing them in Washington, DC the week after the Kennedy assassination Thanksgiving weekend in 1963. Their magic endures through the years.

  • iam a rommani.gypsy .love these boys

  • meanwhile upstairs an old man is holding his ears stating out loud, "Damn young'ns and their rock n roll music!"

  • This is what good music should be. Great voices, great harmonies, simple guitar and a song that still thrills after decades. They were the best.

  • I was raised on the Clancy Brothers, thanks to my father. They seem to get ignored now in music history, but I hope that turns around. Great musicians.

  • Great singers all, they got alotta help from Pete Seeger and his super organizing wife,

Toshi; as they had been on the folk circuit for about fifteen years before the boyos hit

the floor of the White Horse Tavern, where they would sing for free beers.

  • Bloody brilliant ! Remembering my dear father as I listen to this....lovely.

  • what a great group of lads

  • They are. Both the Makem Brothers and the Clancy Brothers are performing still... the sons of the greats... and just as good in their own right.

  • Oh shit are they all really gone now? I saw them in America after listening to their music for 40 years. Are not their sons now carrying on their tradition? Robert

  • Great old video clip... just listen to the vibrato in a young Tommy Makem's voice!

Too bad they are all past on now. Glad I was able to see them live a few times.

  • loving it! would love the words to sing along with!

  • @ZenSporty If you go to flynner's folk songs you will find a tutorial of me singing this song and also the words of the song. Hope that this is of some help to you. Brian Flynn. Just put in: flynner's folk songs

  • loving it!

  • They are all gone now but they left us a treasury of music.

  • Great music I grew up listening to these as a boy as my father has their records. A sweater the same as theirs he used to have, what days :-)

  • That Don Ferris doing the annoucing isn't it?

Woner how many years he was with WTTW?

  • mmm nice

  • Great guys all of them :)Such wonderful music too

    RIP Liam Clancy.

  • great song . it must have been amazing for those guys to travel to america and then get on american tv all those years ago when things were so different than in ireland,

  • Know the song by heart. Really well thought of folk song. Sang it at outdoor school every night and would add a verse every night. Most memorable song I know

  • Im 44 and since I was a small boy my Grandparents played tis song for me I remeember my pap whistling this sometimes all day what memories thanks

  • Tommy makem.Perfect.

  • what a beautiful song!

when i was in yr 2 our teacher played this song to us and go us to sing the A dee do a dee do die day part :P

  • I'd say this has to be one of my favs, but I'm sure I'll find another...so I guess they are ALL my favs...after all, it TM&CB...how can it NOT be?

  • You are right Twyned but for all Fans check out The High Kings

There fathers may be dead but the Sons continue the Tradition..

  • Besides not being well-informed and having a tin ear, what are your other problems?

  • Haha, if you think that The High Kings are actually traditional, then YOU are the one who is misinformed and have a tin ear, my good man. Just compare them to ANY other band from back when traditional music was just that, and you'll see how slick, over-produced and over done the instrumentation is. How far from the good old preformers, just like the Clancy Brothers, they actually are. Or are you one of those who think that Riverdance is the hight of celtic culture as well? Or the Corrs, maybe?

  • While I do like this version a lot, I understand what you mean. This is a pop version of folk. If someone listens to the Kingston Trio (pop) and then listens to the Max Hunter collection available online, they'll hear the difference.

  • TYpe in........

Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye-Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem

  • Best version has been taken off by those pricks at MGM though.

  • can anyone tell me wat to type to find tommy makem and the clancy brothers singing johnny i hardly knew ya i can not find it please reply

  • They are still my favorite. Good stuff.

  • funny whistler....wheres the river that was called cladey ,,,,,,,,,adey dooooooo

  • Bless you for posting this, menbehindthesweaters! Priceless footage, great music.

  • Thank you, Connor. What a marvelous find.

  • Adored them back in the 60s in Manchester - still can't get enough of them to this day - so sad only Liam now

  • irish folk at its very best ... what amazing talents all these lads had , sad only liam left

  • They were great - though it's not surprising, they were very old.

  • This is just wonderful!! I never knew this existed - what a treat!!
