Why is Doc's office on the second floor? All those poor sick and wounded patients always have to walk up and down those stairs...?? And, it appears that Chester is Matt's Deputy. However, he never wears a Deputy's badge...why?
That's the trouble with the world today. The Matt Dillons are out of style, and are replaced with reptiles like that guy with the handlebar moustache.
@Trund27 My bad...he was actually 6' 7"...and Marshall Dillon's characteristic limp was actually caused when he arrived on the beach at Anzio...German artillery took his shin out...he had to learn to walk again but retained a limp because of the injury. You've probably heard it all before...but I do enjoy a good story.
this is a good reason why people should not be allowed to carry guns in the street. It creates danger for law abiding citizens.. and is used to threaten law enforcers.
Anyone ever notice you never see a toilet or urinal in any of the jail cells? I suppose you have to assume there is at least a chamber pot in the cells even if there was no plumbing in those days. Also never a mention of an outhouse etc.
@yes350yes nothing real about western jails was ever shown on early tv people wouldnt have watched during supper for sure . oh yeah there was nothing even resembling miss kitty in dodge city nor tombstone
The bad guy on the horse was played by Lawrence Dobkin, who in this role did an amazingly effective job. Mort Mills, who would go on to play many character roles, was the prisoner released from jail.
@utubemusiccritic Lawrence Dobkin was a regular on the radio Gunsmoke. He played many roles but was in almost every episode. An amazing actor. This is the 31st of 635 epsiodes of Gunsmoke, broadcast late in the first season- June 23, 1956. They went right into the summer in those days.
The thing I remember about some of these early Gunsmoke episodes is that Matt Dillon was always a law and order man. He was willing to take the law into his own hands if he thought it was best course. In one episode, he and Chester ambushed some rustlers instead of taking them in.
Well I for one would like to see more of the old or early gunsmoke episodes with chester. The main channel I coould see gunsmoke on is the western channel on encore. plus on a local pbs channel which colorizes it which I dont care for.
@pigsickasham: Yes, Dennis Weaver played Chester, on "Gunsmoke", before he went on to play McCloud. Dennis Weaver was also in a very interesting original "Twilight Zone", called "Shadow Play". It was remade later, as a color episode, in the 1980s, but I think the original is better.
Men die for a lot of reasons. I've even heard of worthy ones, like a man who's willing to face it for the good that might come after. But he's a far different breed than most of this Boot Hill trash. These men die for fools' reasons - a spilt drink, a wrong card, an imagined insult. But the worst is a man who dies for nothing... for no reason at all.
Brilliant writing. The name of the episode is "how to die for nothing". Unfortunately I don't see the rest of the episonde poster here.
Agreed about the quality of the writing. Always loved "Gunsmoke," always will. About your comment re: Men who die for nothing - kinda like today, huh?
On Gunsmoke, they make a point of showing that Matt is not Invincible. (like how he lost a gunfight in the first episode) Here he was up against a cowboy whose strategy was to play mind games and then shoot his opponents from ambush. He used Matt's own code of honor against him and the mind games worked... up until this scene. After this conflict, Matt snapped out of it and put the guy on boot hill by anticipating the ambush.
No but I think they should alternate between the older ones and the later ones each day. You would think they would have that much consideration for all the great episodes from the earlier days. Even though most were 30 minutes they still could show two instead of one for the time slot.
The answer is in four words: black and white, color. People just can't deal with black-and-white film, even when it's great stuff. Also, like "MASH" the later episodes got soft. The posted clip is tough stuff, and there's nothing touchy-feely about it.
i disagree..andy griffith, gilligans island, bewitched, i dream of genie.. etc were both b&w and color, and all the episodes get equal play now adays..
i thin the 30 min vs 1 hour long episodes makes more sense..
So often Dillon had to choose the safety of his town over the retribution he craved. And he would do it. That's why Gunsmoke is unique among the TV westerns. The movies already had established the myth of the west. Gunsmoke was about the reality.
lol. That was very funny the way he said that in a tauting irritating way. But notice how that hotel owner stared at Matt Dillon trying to get approval.
Matt Dillon was trying to teach that cowboy not to threaten people about serious matters as life and death. Dillon had to reckon with the Full extent of the law and not just his emotions.

Chester was kinda useless. Had a limp and didn't even carry a gun. "Watch out, Mister Dillon" was about as much help as he gave Matt.
Festus was goofy too, but at least when the chips were down he could handle a gun and himself, and could actually back Matt up.
